Citizen science (CS) can foster transformative impact for science, citizen empowerment and socio-political processes. To unleash this impact, a clearer understanding of its current status and challenges for its development is needed. Using quantitative indicators developed in a collaborative stakeholder process, our study provides a comprehensive overview of the current status of CS in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Our online survey with 340 responses focused on CS impact through (1) scientific practices, (2) participant learning and empowerment, and (3) socio-political processes. With regard to scientific impact, we found that data quality control is an established component of CS practice, while publication of CS data and results has not yet been achieved by all project coordinators (55%). Key benefits for citizen scientists were the experience of collective impact (“making a difference together with others”) as well as gaining new knowledge. For the citizen scientists’ learning outcomes, different forms of social learning, such as systematic feedback or personal mentoring, were essential. While the majority of respondents attributed an important value to CS for decision-making, only few were confident that CS data were indeed utilized as evidence by decision-makers. Based on these results, we recommend (1) that project coordinators and researchers strengthen scientific impact by fostering data management and publications, (2) that project coordinators and citizen scientists enhance participant impact by promoting social learning opportunities and (3) that project initiators and CS networks foster socio-political impact through early engagement with decision-makers and alignment with ongoing policy processes. In this way, CS can evolve its transformative impact. © 2023, The Author(s).

Instability of rear electrodes undermines the long-term operational durability of efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a composite electrode of copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) alloy stabilized by in situ grown bifacial graphene is designed. The alloying makes the work function of Cu suitable for regular PSCs and Cu-Ni is the ideal substrate for preparing high-quality graphene via chemical vapor deposition, which simultaneously protects the device from oxygen, water and internal components reaction. To rivet the composite electrode with semi-device, a thermoplastic copolymer is employed as an adhesive layer during hot pressing. The resultant device achieved power conversion efficiency of 24.34% with significantly improved stability;the devices without encapsulation retained 97% of their initial efficiency after the damp heat test at 85oC with relative humidity of 85% for 1440 hours and the encapsulated devices maintained 95% of their initial efficiencies after maximum power point tracking under continuous 1 sun illumination for 5000 hours. © 2021, CC BY.

In this study, we utilize first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) to examine the structural, electronic, mechanical, optical, and thermoelectric properties of CsYZnX (X = Br, I) materials, with a focus on their potential applications in solar cells and thermoelectric devices aimed at advancing environmentally-friendly perovskite materials. The structural integrity of CsYZnX compounds is confirmed through tolerance factor analysis, which validates their stable cubic perovskite structure. Thermodynamic stability is ensured by calculating the formation energies of both compounds. Dynamic stability is confirmed using the phonon dispersion curve. Electronic property analysis shows that both materials exhibit semiconducting behavior, with Cs2YZnBr6 having a band gap of 2.93 eV and Cs2YZnI6 having a band gap of 2.29 eV. The mechanical stability of these compounds is affirmed by the computed elastic constants, further demonstrating their suitability for practical applications. Optical property evaluation reveals that both materials have good optical absorption in the visible and UV regions, making them promising for optoelectronic applications. In addition, the thermoelectric performance of CsYZnX is assessed, with both materials displaying a maximum Seebeck coefficient of 1.56 × 10 V K at room temperature. These findings emphasize the significant potential of CsYZnX perovskites for integration into optoelectronic and thermoelectric devices, contributing to the advancement of sustainable materials in energy conversion technologies.

Heavy metal ions (HMIs) are major water pollutants, and their toxicity for humans is a great concern for scientists and environmentalists. They are harmful to health even at trace levels;therefore, identifying and removing heavy metals from water is critical. Herein, we report highly selective and sensitive multi-analyte detection of HMIs in water using an electrochemical sensor probe based on Ag nanoparticles and single-walled carbon nanotubes incorporating copper benzene tri-carboxylate metal–organic frameworks (Ag/SWNTs@CuBTC-MOFs). The materials were characterized using FTIR, XPS, XRD, and FE-SEM with EDX mapping, TEM, TG-DTA, BET surface area, CV, and EIS. The Ag/SWNTs@CuBTC-MOF electrochemical sensor was tested by differential pulse voltammetry over a pH range of 3–10 for various HMIs. It shows high pH-dependent sensitivity towards Hg²⁺ (pH-5.0), Ni²⁺ (pH-7.0), and Fe³⁺ (pH-10.0) ions and a limit of detection of 1.39 nM, 2.6 nM, and 3.03 nM, respectively. The fabricated sensor probe exhibits high selectivity, good linearity, and a limit of detection below the maximum contamination limit, as the US Environmental Protection Agency suggested. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay half-life in Xe136 using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of Xe136. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the 0νββ decay half-life of T1/20ν>2.3×1026 yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36–156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations.

Cosmic-ray muons produce various radioisotopes when passing through material. These spallation products can be backgrounds for rare event searches such as in solar neutrino, double-β decay, and dark matter search experiments. The KamLAND-Zen experiment searches for neutrinoless double-β decay in 745 kg of xenon dissolved in liquid scintillator. The experiment includes dead-time-free electronics with a high efficiency for detecting muon-induced neutrons. The production yields of different radioisotopes are measured with a combination of delayed coincidence techniques, newly developed muon reconstruction, and xenon spallation identification methods. The observed xenon spallation products are consistent with results from the fluka and geant4 simulation codes.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the P4 suicide screener in a multinational sample. The primary goal was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the scale and investigate its convergent validity by analyzing its correlation with depression, anxiety, and substance use. Study design: The study design is a cross-sectional self-report study conducted across 42 countries. Methods: A cross-sectional, self-report study was conducted in 42 countries, with a total of 82,243 participants included in the final data set. Results: The study provides an overview of suicide ideation rates across 42 countries and confirms the structural validity of the P4 screener. The findings indicated that sexual and gender minority individuals exhibited higher rates of suicidal ideation. The P4 screener showed adequate reliability, convergence, and discriminant validity, and a cutoff score of 1 is recommended to identify individuals at risk of suicidal behavior. Conclusions: The study supports the reliability and validity of the P4 suicide screener across 42 diverse countries, highlighting the importance of using a cross-cultural suicide risk assessment to standardize the identification of high-risk individuals and tailoring culturally sensitive suicide prevention strategies. © 2024 The Royal Society for Public Health

Nanoparticles of Al2O3 and ZrO2 were deposited in dual Silicon nanopores by chemical vapor deposition (CVD).This work presents a study of the integration effect of the alumina nanoparticle on morphological and opto-electronic properties of a porous Sidp/ZrO2 composite. Various techniques have been used such as scanning electron microscope, energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic ellipsommetry and impedance analyzer techniques for coroled between morpho-structural and opto-electronic properties. After correlating the opto microstructural and electrical properties, we find this process simple, easy and efficient to produce high quality Sidp/ZrO2/Al2O3 thin films for optoelectronic applications. © 2022, The Authors. Here, a modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) coated with a hybrid g-C 3 N 4 @CeO 2 /CdO nanocomposite was developed for the sensitive electrochemical detection of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The hybrid nanocomposite was synthesized using a solid-state technique and thoroughly characterized using UV–vis., FTIR, SEM, XRD, XPS, TEM, and BET analyses to evaluate its optical, functional, morphological, crystalline, and surface area properties. Electrochemical techniques, including linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were employed to study the selective detection of 4-NP by the g-C 3 N 4 @CeO 2 /CdO/Nafion/GCE. The sensor demonstrated a detection range of 2.4–7.5 µM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.45 µM. Its reliability for detecting 4-NP in ambient water samples was validated by electrochemical approach and achieved a recovery range of 99.57–99.33 %. The sensor offers several advantages, including ease of fabrication, rapid response, high sensitivity, and excellent reproducibility. This study presents a promising approach for detecting carcinogenic chemicals using binary metal oxide-based hybrid nanocomposites, contributing to environmental safety and ecological protection on a larger scale.
