We present a search for the proton decay mode p→ν¯K+ based on an exposure of 8.97 kton-years in the KamLAND experiment. The liquid scintillator detector is sensitive to successive signals from p→ν¯K+ with unique kinematics, which allow us to achieve a detection efficiency of 44%, higher than previous searches in water Cherenkov detectors. We find no evidence of proton decays for this mode. The expected background, which is dominated by atmospheric neutrinos, is 0.9±0.2 events. The nonbackground-subtracted limit on the partial proton lifetime is τ/B(p→ν¯K+)>5.4×1032 years at 90% C.L.

We have built an instructional design support system called "FIMA-Light" which reasons about teacher's intentions from his/her lesson plan and automatically produces IL event decomposition trees. In this paper, we discuss a particular use of IL event decomposition trees produced by FIMA-Light in a teacher education program. First, we consider effective alignment between teacher education at university and teaching practice in the classroom. We also report on trial use of FIMA-Light in teacher education at university in order to investigate the usability of the information expressed by IL event decomposition trees.

Future standardized system for distinguishing actual and artifactual magnetoencephalogram (MEG) data is an essential tool. In this paper, we proposed the quantitative parameters based on fractal dimension (FD) analyses in which the FD may convey different features before and after artifact removal. The six FD algorithms based on time-series computation, namely, box-counting method (BCM), variance fractal dimension (VFD), Higuchi’s method (HM), Kazt’s method (KM), detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), and modified zero-crossing rate (MZCR) were compared. These approaches measure nonlinear-behavioral responses in the resting-state MEG data. Experimental results showed that the FD value of actual MEG was increased statistically in comparison with the artifactual MEG. The DFA and the HM present a best performance for analyzing simulated data and resting-state MEG data, respectively. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Effect of Gas Flaring on Soil and Cassava Productivity in Ebedei, Ukwuani Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria

The threat to human, fauna and flora life posed by pollution due to gas flaring cannot be over-emphasized. Gas flared often resulted in some environmental degradation, one of such influence is soil pollution and poor crop yield. This study examined the effect of gas flaring on soil and cassava productivity in Ebedei, Ukwuani LGA, Delta State. For the purpose of data collection, five (5) experimental sites were systematically selected around the flare site in Ebedei and a control site at Obiaruku. Soil samples were collected at surface 0 - 10 cm and 10 - 20 cm at distance of 50 m, 100 m, 150 m, 200 m and 250 m apart respectively away from the bund wall of the flare. The data generated were analysed using multiple regression and paired t-test analyses. The study revealed that the soils found in Ebedei have high composition of sand and soil temperature and are acidic. The soil electrical conductivity, Phosphorous, Nitrogen, Potassium and Sodium were very low. More so, the yield of cassava increases with a corresponding increase in distances from flare site. The first hypothesis revealed that there is significant variation in soil nutrients as distance increases from gas flare sites. This is evident from F value of 234.99 which is greater than the critical table value of 4.39. Furthermore, as flare distance increases, so also the organic carbon, electrical conductivity and Nitrogen increase. The second hypothesis revealed that there is a significant difference in cassava yield at gas-flared area and the non-flared area which is evident at t (6.032) is greater than the critical table (1.895) at P 0.05. It is therefore recommended that Government and FEPA should enact environmental Policies and revisit and review existing environmental and oil drilling laws in Nigeria with a view of updating them to international and environmental friendly standards.

The existence of a non-zero electric dipole moment (EDM) implies the violation of time reversal symmetry. As the time-reversal symmetry violation predicted by the Standard Model (SM) for the electron EDM is too small to be observed with current experimental techniques and any a non-zero EDM would indicate new physics beyond the SM. The tiny signal from the electron EDM is enhanced in the heavy atoms such as francium (Fr). We are constructing the laser-cooled Fr factory to search for the electron EDM. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

In one-dimensional optical setups, light-matter interaction is drastically enhanced by the interference between the incident and scattered fields. Particularly, in the impedance-matched Λ-type three-level systems, a single photon deterministically induces the Raman transition and switches the electronic state of the system. Here, we show that such a Λ system can be implemented by using dressed states of a driven superconducting qubit and a resonator. The input microwave photons are perfectly absorbed and are down-converted into other frequency modes in the same waveguide. The proposed setup is applicable to the detection of single microwave photons and the swapping of the photon and matter qubits.

We have investigated the microwave response of a transmon qubit coupled directly to a transmission line. In a transmon qubit, owing to its weak anharmonicity, a single driving field may generate dressed states involving more than two bare states. We confirmed the formation of three-state dressed states by observing all of the six associated Rabi sidebands, which appear as either amplification or attenuation of the probe field. The experimental results are reproduced with good precision by a theoretical model incorporating the radiative coupling between the qubit and the microwave.
