Investigation on new scintillators for subnanosecond time-resolved x-ray measurements

We investigated new x-ray detectors for nuclear resonant scattering measurements with high energy x rays. The organic-inorganic perovskite scintillator of phenethylamine lead halide ((C6H5C2H4NH3)2PbX4) (X:Br, I) was used. These compounds have fast light emission due to an exciton. They include heavy atoms, which make the detector to have high efficiency to high energy x rays. The merit of these scintillators is that we can make a thick crystal compared to a Si wafer which is used in an avalanche photo-diode detector. We successfully measured 67.41 keV x ray signals, the energy of 61Ni nuclear resonant scattering, with high detection efficiency of 42.5 % by the scintillator.

Neutrino nucleosynthesis is an important synthesis process for light elements in supernovae. One important physics input of neutrino nucleosynthesis is cross sections of neutrino‐nucleus reactions. The cross sections of neutrino‐ 12C and 4He reactions are derived using new shell model Hamiltonians. With the new cross sections, light element synthesis of a supernova is investigated. The appropriate range of the neutrino temperature for supernovae is constrained to be between 4.3 MeV and 6.5 MeV from the 11B abundance in Galactic chemical evolution. Effects by neutrino oscillations are also discussed.

The aim of this article is to test how different narrative structures work in mobile video storytelling applications for creative arts. Especially, we are interested in stories made with the mobile phone and for the mobile phone i.e. they are supposed to be viewed on the mobile phone. In addition, we present a new mobile social video service and demo platform MoViE that enables users to create mobile narrations and stories using narrative structures. Hypothesis is that it is possible to create a dramaturgically intensive and coherent story from various short mobile videos composed by several authors if only there is a story generator that composes the certain structure and order to the combination of mobile videos. User of a mobile phone with video camera works as an author, and several authors could produce a common narrative with one storyline that is composed by automatic story generator. In the empirical part of the article we apply a narrative structure based on jazz music as a matrix for the story generator and analyze the creation process of video clips. In this study, we use ethnomethodology as our research framework. Copyright 2008 ACM.

The aim of this Artwork & Demo is to present a new mobile social video service and demo platform MoViE that enables users to create mobile narrations and stories using narrative structures. Visitors of the conference will be able to contribute to this service daring the conference using their mobile phones or phones available at the booth. Automatically generated video stories or montages are created and presented based on the video clips visitors produce. Copyright 2008 ACM.

With the rapid progress and considerable promise of nanobiotechnology/ neurosciences there is the potential of transforming the very nature of human beings and of how humans can conceive of themselves as rational animals through technological innovations. The interface between humans and machines (neuro-digital interface), can potentially alter what it means to be human, i.e., the very idea of human nature and of normal functioning will be changed. In this paper, I argue that we are potentially on the verge of a paradigm shift in terms of the ends and goals of techno-science and its applications in the biomedical sciences. In particular, the development of brain-computer interfaces could reconceptualize the very notion of what it means to be human. Hence, we should not limit our reflections of applications in terms of therapy and enhancement but also include an examination of applications aiming at the alteration of human nature. To this end I will first delineate the potential paradigm shift and then map out four distinct clusters of concerns in relation to the brain-computer interface. Finally, I argue that our moral and philosophical reflections should follow a procedural model based on managed consensus due to our pluralistic context. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008.

Ultrasonic dispersion in the filled skutterudite CeFe4Sb12

The rattling motion in Ce-based filled skutterudite CeFe4Sb12 has been investigated by means of ultrasonic measurements. We found ultrasonic dispersion obviously in elastic constant C44 between 35 and 70 K, suggesting the rattling motion of Ce atoms, and obtained a relaxation time τ0 = 1.5 x 10-12 s and an excitation energy E = 345 K of the rattling motion. τ0, E and the temperature range of ultrasonic dispersion in CeFe4Sb12 are a little lower than that in LaFe4Sb12 and PrFe4Sb12. Elastic softening in C44 is not observed down to 4.2 K.

This paper addresses the problem of developing low-complexity authentication challenge-response protocols based on employment of pseudorandom sequences generated by cellular automata (CA). The proposed protocol is an improved variant of the recently reported HB # protocol. Oppositely from the reported HB-protocols the proposed one is based in the following: (i) The response vector consists of the effective bits and dummy bits embedded in a pseudorandom manner: The effective bits are corrupted parity-check bits, and the dummy ones are pure random bits; (ii) The states of secret key controlled CA are employed for generation of the effective response bits and for the pseudorandom embedding of the effective and the dummy bits. The proposed protocol provides a framework for increasing the security and reducing the implementation complexity and communications overhead in comparison with the previously reported HB # one.

From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co2+ spin compound BaCo2V2O8, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the Néel-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and the peculiar spin structure is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering.

We have measured de-excitation γ rays in Cm249 populated by one-neutron stripping reactions with a Cm248 target and 162-MeV O16, 162-MeV O18, and 120-MeV C13 beams. γ rays in Cm249 were identified by measuring kinetic energies of outgoing particles using Si ΔE−E detectors. It was demonstrated that high-j orbitals were selectively populated in the (O16, O15) reaction having a large negative Q value. We have observed eight quasiparticle states above the deformed shell gap of N=152. The 1/2+[620], 1/2−[750], and 7/2+[613] bands were extended up to 19/2+, 19/2−, and 13/2+ states, respectively. We have established the 9/2 9/2+[615] state at 526 keV, the 9/2 9/2+[604] state with a short life of T1/2≪2 ps at 1030 keV, and the 11/2 11/2−[725] state with T1/2=19(1) ns at 375 keV. Furthermore, the 17/2 1/2+[880] state, having a large component of the k17/2 spherical single-particle state, has been identified at 1505 keV. We discuss the properties of those quasiparticle states in the framework of a deformed shell model.
