We report the observation of four-wave mixing phenomenon on copper ion modified-DNA nano-structure in solution. Z-scan technique with a femtosecond lasing system is employed to determine the nonlinear refractive index n 2 , which causes the four-wave mixing effect.

Mahalanobis distance Δ2 values are commonly in the range of 0 to +∞ where higher values represent greater distance between class means or points. The increase in Mahalanobis distance is unbounded as the distance multiply. To certain extend, the unbounded distance values pose difficulties in the evaluation and decision for instance in the sensors closeness test. This paper proposes an approach to [0, 1] bounded Mahalanobis distance Δ2 that enable researcher to easily perform sensors closeness test. The experimental data of four different types of rice based on three different electronic nose sensors namely InSniff, PEN3, and Cyranose320 were analyzed and sensor closeness test seems successfully performed within the [0, 1] bound.

BACKGROUND:Our motivation for this study was to develop a noninvasive glucose sensor for low birth weight neonates. We hypothesized that the underdeveloped skin of neonates will allow for the diffusion of glucose to the surface where it can be sampled noninvasively. On further study, we found that measurable amounts of glucose can also be collected on the skin of adults.
METHOD:Cellulose acetate dialysis membrane was used as surrogate for preterm neonatal skin. Glucose on the surface was collected by saline-moistened swabs and analyzed with glucose-binding protein (GBP). The saline-moistened swab was also tested in the neonatal intensive care unit. Saline was directly applied on adult skin and collected for analysis with two methods: GBP and high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC).
RESULTS:The amount of glucose on the membrane surface was found (1) to accumulate with time but gradually level off, (2) to be proportional to the swab dwell time, and (3) the concentration of the glucose solution on the opposite side of the membrane. The swab, however, failed to absorb glucose on neonatal skin. On direct application of saline onto adult skin, we were able to measure by HPAEC and GBP the amount of glucose collected on the surface. Blood glucose appears to track transdermal glucose levels.
CONCLUSIONS:We were able to measure trace amounts of glucose on the skin surface that appear to follow blood glucose levels. The present results show modest correlation with blood glucose. Nonetheless, this method may present a noninvasive alternative to tracking glucose trends.

Array based gas sensortechnology namely Electronic Nose(E-nose) now offers the potential of a rapid and robust analytical approach to odor measurement for medical use. Wounds become infected when a microorganism which is bacteria from the environment or patient's body enters the open wound and multiply. The conventional method consumes more time to detect the bacteria growth. However,by using this E-Nose,the bacteria can be detected and classified according to their volatile organic compound(VOC) in shorter time. Readings were taken from headspace of samples by manually introducing the portable e-nose system into a special container that containing a volume of bacteria in suspension. The data will be processed by using statistical analysis which is Principle Component Analysis(PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA) methods. The most common bacteria in diabetic foot are Staphylococcus aureus,Escherchia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and many more.

Fluorescence ratiometric temperature sensing system for stand-off temperature measurements in the physiological range is presented. It is based on the use of fluorescence dyes and an integrating photodetector system. The system is intended for use in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). It utilizes a measurement and a reference fluorescence dyes encapsulated in a film. Fluorescence is excited using LEDs and the emission is detected using photodiodes equipped with optical band pass filters. The current generated by the photodiodes is integrated and the charge is digitized. The fluorescence intensity is calculated as the difference in the measured intensities when the LED is on or off. The ratio of the two emission intensities depends linearly on the temperature. The system operates under room-light illumination with resolution
A remotely-measured fluorescence-based temperature measurement system designed for neonatal care is built and presented using a low-cost, off-the-shelf camera-phone image sensor. The fluorophore-based sensor salve rem...

Determination of burning smell is important because it can help in early fire detection and prevention. In this paper, a household burning smell classification system for early fire detection application has been proposed using Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) and PCA analysis. The experiments were performed on recorded smell samples from combustion of ten different commonly available household, including candle, joss sticks, air freshener, mosquito coil, newspaper, card board, plastic materials, Styrofoam and wood. All the experiments were done in a test chamber with humidity and temperature sensors. Portable Electronic Nose (PEN3) from Airsense Analytics is used as the measurement device. The smell source is placed 0.3m from the PEN3 and the time-series signal is measured for two minutes. The odour metrics is modelled using Probabilistic Neural Network. It is found that the average classification accuracy for the model is 99.62%.

It is capable to better suppress the influence of the ambient light intensity as compared with previous camera based systems.
