A new distributed arithmetic has been applied to the 1-D DCT to produce a low power, high throughput architecture. In this paper, we apply NEDA to the even-odd decomposition matrices of the 8times8 forward and inverse DCT. We show that, with the proposed approach, the number of adders required for the adder array for the forward DCT and the inverse DCT is fewer than required if NEDA is applied directly to the 8times8 DCT and IDCT matrices. This reduction results in power savings, without decreasing the throughput. Also, for the inverse DCT, the number of adder stages is reduced, resulting in faster decoding

Coulomb localization and exchange modulation in two-electron coupled quantum dots

A general study of the singlet-triplet energy separation (exchange energy) in the two-electron system confined in a realistic double-quantum-dot system is performed using a hybrid multiscale approach where the many-body Schrödinger equation is solved exactly within the full quantum dot device environment. The exchange energy is computed as a function of the gate confinement and magnetic field. In particular, it is found that at zero magnetic field the exchange energy varies from meV to sub-μeV values as the confinement gate biases (tunneling barrier) are changed and the system is driven from a single quantum dot to two coupled quantum dots. The small values of the exchange coupling in this structure are attributed to the large interelectron separation arising when the Coulomb repulsion dominates tunneling.

Autonomic Computing (AC), self-management based on high level guidance from humans, is increasingly gaining momentum as the way forward in designing reliable systems to hide complexity and conquer IT management costs. Effectively, AC may be viewed as Policy-Based Self-Management. In this paper we look at the motivation for utilizing NASA requirements-based programming technologies for mechanically transforming policies (expressed in restricted natural language, or appropriate graphical notations) into a provably equivalent formal model that can be used as the basis for code generation and other transformations, with the goal of self-generation of provable autonomic policies. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2005.

The decorrelator is a linear transform that can be used in multi-user detection receivers in cellular networks to increase the capacity of the base-station receiver. It has been shown that the decorrelation operation can be performed using iterative methods that do not require computation-intensive inverse matrix computation. We propose a high throughput systolic array architecture for the decorrelator receiver, which meets the throughput demands of 3G mobile communications systems.

Multi-user detection is a paradigm that is used to enhance the performance of the receivers in cellular networks in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER), capacity and near-far effect. Parallel Interference Cancellation is the choice for most current multi-user detection receivers because of its simplicity in implementation and good qualitative parameters. Decorrelator-based Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) has been proposed to improve the performance of the PIC receiver. In this paper, we make an important observation about the determination of the Decorrelator that makes it feasible for it to be used in conjunction with PIC in the base-station receiver.

Visualizing the artifacts of a software system graphically has proven to improve the cognitive strategies and understanding of the subject system by programmers. This is more crucial when they need to maintain a software system with out-dated documentation or without system documentation at all. Many tools have emerged and they predominantly consist of a reverse engineering environment and a viewer to visualize software artifacts such as in the form of graphs. The tools also grant structural redocumentation of existing software system but they do not directly utilize document-like software visualization in their approaches. We propose DocLike modularized graph (DMG) method that represents the software architectures of a reverse engineered subject system graphically in a modularized and standardized document-like manner. To realize this method, we have built a prototype tool called DocLike Viewer that enables a user to redocument, visualize and comprehend a subject system written in C language that is parsed by an existing parser. From the experiment conducted we found that our method managed to statistically improve cognition of a subject system in terms of productivity and quality to solve certain types of maintenance tasks.

Airborne and satellite remote sensing have enormous potential for facilitating and monitoring the dynamics of intergenerational natural resource management and built environment sustainability. Based on reviews of (1) the development and current state of the science for deploying remote sensing, and (2) capabilities and limitations of the array of archival and real-time remotely sensed resources as tools for attaining and monitoring sustainability, we suggest several "best practices" for incorporating remote sensing within sustainability plans for selected rural and urban ecosystems. We present sustainability indices for case studies relating to sustainable forestry, agriculture, watersheds, and urbanizing areas, as well as a conceptual prototype for incorporating remotely sensed data within a general purpose decision support system that highlights the benefits of multi-temporal historical change detection in monitoring past and ongoing change, and in visualization of alternative future scenarios. Finally, we examine the sustainability of remote sensing technology, itself, with respect to economic pressures, public policy perturbations, systems resilience, biogenic factors and both inadvertent and deliberate anthropogenic impact.

In ad hoc networks, each node utilizes its limited resources to carry out the collective operation of the network. It is not always in the best interests of the network's nodes to demand the continuous participation of all nodes in the network operations. We propose an energy dependent participation (EDP) scheme, where a node periodically re-evaluates its participation in the network based on the residual energy in its battery. More importantly, a node gives special consideration to supporting the communication needs of its active network applications and preventing further network partitioning. EDP's localized partition checking algorithm is particularly well suited for the zone routing protocol, where the link-state information is proactively maintained within each node's local zone and routes to faraway nodes are reactively obtained via global queries. Through simulations, we evaluate the impact of our proposed scheme on battery life and network connectivity. Our results suggest that the EDP scheme can increase the usable lifetime of a battery-constraint ad hoc network by over 50%.

A content-based image retrieval(CBIR) system has been constructed to integrate relevance feedback with triangle-inequality based algorithms. The system offers typically 20 to 30 times faster retrieving speed with minimum sacrifice of retrieval performance on Corel database consisting of more than 17,000 images. The theoretic framework is built by using triangle-inequality based algorithms at sub-feature level and using relevance feedback techniques at feature level. Results show retrieval performance is clearly improved over the approach with only triangle-inequality based algorithms. A new high level weight updating method for the hierarchical distance model for relevance feedback is proposed.
