Following Mandayam et al. (1998), we define outage events as the channel being attenuated for at least a deterministic period of time, /spl tau//sub m/. Compared with a continuous time Markov chain or discrete time Markov chain, a semi-Markov process (SMP) is general enough that it allows the sojourn time to be any distribution function. In this paper, we develop a minimum duration outage model based on an SMP. Closed-form expressions are derived for the time dependent and steady state probabilities of outage. Describing the outage event in the transient regime, our model can reflect the channel fading behavior in a dynamic way.

The need to apply a knowledge based artificial intelligence system is driven by the complexity of the space shuttle propellant loading process and by the need to evaluate the hardware's performance;both tasks are man-power intensive and difficult to program using standard techniques. The Propulsion Advisory Tool (PAT) identifies both actual and potential system failures and provides pertinent data required for anomaly resolution. The knowledge base is coded using a natural language interface and is developed based on existing requirements documents and knowledge captured from experts working in the propulsion arena. The development and implementation of the PAT knowledge base applies a hybrid methodology utilizing commercial off-the-shelf tools and custom computer code. Each "real" hardware component is modeled by a virtual object that is defined within the knowledge base architecture. These objects have characteristics that correspond directly to the real component. The conclusions required to establish component/system status are based upon several levels of knowledge. Specific electrical circuits have been modeled within the G2 knowledge base to show "live" wires along with active objects that represent the various talkbacks within the circuit. Thus, the systems engineer can directly relate the data provided by the computer with the paperbased circuit drawings. The PAT kn owledge based expert system continues to be an essential part of Boeing North American's Integrated Health Management philosophy. © 1997, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

We have recently introduced Opus, a set of Fortran language extensions that provide shared data abstractions (SDAs) as a mechanism for communication and synchronization among coarse-grain data parallel tasks. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation issues of the runtime system necessary to support SDAs, and outline the underlying requirements for such a runtime system. We explore the feasibility of this approach by implementing a prototype of the runtime system. We give preliminary results of the prototype on the Intel Paragon, outline the current status of the project, and discuss future plans.< >

Magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy techniques are now being used to detect changes in blood flow, volume and oxygenation level associated with brain function. The authors describe a prototype system, called a neuroscope, that provides a real-time acquisition, control and processing environment for functional brain studies. Preliminary experiments have shown that oxygenation sensitive changes in the rat can be captured in real-time. When fully developed, this system should prove very useful for mapping the spatial and temporal patterns of functional brain activity of humans. © 1994 IEEE.

There is a very large demand for basic telephone service in developing nations, and remote parts of industrialized nations, which cannot be met by conventional wireline and cellular systems. This is the world's largest unserved market. We describe a system which uses recent advances in active phased arrays, fast-packet switching technology, adaptive routeing, and light spacecraft technology, in part based on the work of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and on recently-declassified work done on the Strategic Defense Initiative, to make it possible to address this market with a global telephone network based on a large low-Earth-orbit constellation of identical satellites. A telephone utility can use such a network to provide the same modern basic and enhanced telephone services offered by telephone utilities in the urban centres of fully-industrialized nations. Economies of scale permit capital and operating costs per subscriber low enough to provide a service to all subscribers, regardless of location, at prices comparable to the same services in urban areas of industrialized nations, while generating operating profits great enough to attract the capital needed for its construction. The bandwidth needed to support the capacity needed to gain these economies of scale requires that the system use K(alpha)-band frequencies. This choice of frequencies places unusual constraints on the network design, and in particular forces the use of a large number of satellites. Global demand for basic and enhanced telephone service is great enough to support at least three networks of the size described herein. The volume of advanced components, and services such as launch services, required to construct and replace these networks is sufficient to propel certain industries to market leadership positions in the early 21st Century.

He received a Ph.D. and M.S. in materials science and engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken N.J. A 1977 graduate of the United States Naval Academy Cdr. Golda has been a member of ASNE since 1974. Cdr. Golda is a materials engineer at the Annapolis Detachment Carderock Division Naval Surface Warfare Center working on naval applications of superconducting technology. LCdr. Gregory A. Porpora:is an IBM market support representative who provides technical consulting support in application development with computer aided software engineering (CASE) tools. Prior to joining IBM he was a senior design engineer for a defense contractor involved in design and development of radar and ASW systems including the AN/BSY-1 combat system trainer. LCdr. Porpora is a member of IEEE the Naval Institute and the Naval Reserve Association. He holds a BSEE and MSEE from the Polytechnic Institute of Technology New York. LCdr. Porpora is currently assigned to NR SupShip Det 502 which provides extensive mutual support for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Bath and the resident office in Brooklyn New York.

Logic programming is being used extensively by Artificial Intelligence researchers to solve problems including natural language processing and expert systems. These languages, of which Prolog is the most widely used, promise to revolutionize software engineering, but much greater performance is needed. Researchers have demonstrated the applicability of neural network models to the solution of certain NP-complete problems, but these methods are not obviously applicable to the execution of logic programs. This paper outlines the use of neural networks in four aspects of the logic program execution cycle, and discusses results of a simulation of three of these. Four neural network functional units are described, called the substitution agent, the clause filter, the structure processor, and the heuristics generator, respectively. Simulation results suggest that the system described may provide several orders of magnitude improvement in execution speed for large logic programs. However, practical implementation of the proposed architecture will require the application of optical computing techniques due to the large number of neurons required, and the need for massive, adaptive connectivity. © 1988 SPIE. A one-dimensional systolic geometry processor (SGP) which is useful in image processing and pattern recognition is described. The geometry processor can be used to enhance processing speed and throughput of the host computer by working as an attached processor.
