By creating a dependable, transparent, and cost-effective system for forecasting and ongoing environmental impact monitoring of exploration and exploitation activities in the deep sea, TRIDENT seeks to contribute to the sustainable exploitation of seabed mineral resources. In order to operate autonomously in remote locations under harsh conditions and send real-time data to authorities in charge of granting licenses and providing oversight, this system will create and integrate new technology and innovative solutions. The efficient monitoring and inspection system that will be created will abide by national and international legal frameworks. At the sea surface, mid-water, and the bottom, TRIDENT will identify all pertinent physical, chemical, geological, and biological characteristics that must be monitored. It will also look for data gaps and suggest procedures for addressing them. These are crucial actions to take in order to produce accurate indicators of excellent environmental status, statistically robust environmental baselines, and thresholds for significant impact, allowing for the standardization of methods and tools. In order to monitor environmental parameters on mining and reference areas at representative spatial and temporal scales, the project consortium will thereafter develop and test an integrated system of stationary and mobile observatory platforms outfitted with the most recent automatic sensors and samplers. The system will incorporate high-capacity data processing pipelines able to gather, transmit, process, and display monitoring data in close to real-time to facilitate prompt actions for preventing major harm to the environment. Last but not least, it will offer systemic and technological solutions for predicting probable impacts of applying the developed monitoring and mitigation techniques.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Norms, Institutions, and Robots

Interactions within human societies are usually regulated by social norms. If robots are to be accepted into human society, it is essential that they are aware of and capable of reasoning about social norms. In this paper, we focus on how to represent social norms in societies with humans and robots, and how artificial agents such as robots can reason about social norms in order to plan appropriate behavior. We use the notion of institution as a way to formally define and encapsulate norms, and we provide a formal framework for institutions. Our framework borrows ideas from the field of multi-agent systems to define abstract normative models, and ideas from the field of robotics to define physical executions as state-space trajectories. By bridging the two in a common model, our framework allows us to use the same abstract institution across physical domains and agent types. We then make our framework computational via a reduction to CSP and show experiments where this reduction is used for norm verification, planning, and plan execution in a domain including a mixture of humans and robots. In this position paper we briey introduce SmartEnv ontology which relies on SEmantic sensor Network (SSN) ontology and is used to represent different aspects of smart and sensorized environments. We will also talk about E-carehome project aiming at providing an IoT-based health-care system for elderly people at their homes. Furthermore, we refer to the role of SmartEnv in Ecarehome and how it needs to be further extended to achieve semantic interoperability as one of the challenges in development of autonomous health care systems at home. © 2018 CEUR-WS. Basidiomycota is one of the major phyla in the fungal tree of *** outline of Basidiomycota provides essential taxonomic information for researchers and workers in *** this study,we present a time-framed phylogenomic tree with 487 species of Basidiomycota from 127 families,47 orders,14 classes and four subphyla;we update the outline of Basidiomycota based on the phylogenomic relationships and the taxonomic studies since 2019;and we provide notes for each order and discuss the history,defining characteristics,evolution,justification of orders,problems,significance,and *** phylogenomic analysis suggests that the subphyla diverged in a time range of 443-490 Myr(million years),classes in a time range of 312-412 Myr,and orders in a time range of 102-361 *** diverged in a time range of 50-289 Myr,76-224 Myr,and 62-156 Myr in Agaricomycotina,Pucciniomycotina,and Ustilaginomycotina,*** on the phylogenomic relationships and divergence times,we propose a new suborder Mycenineae in Agaricales to accommodate *** the current outline of Basidiomycota,there are four subphyla,20 classes,77 orders,297 families,and 2134 genera *** building a robust taxonomy of Basidiomycota in the genomic era,the generation of molecular phylogenetic data has become relatively *** phenotypical characters,especially those that can be applied for identification and classification,however,has become increasingly challenging.

With biodiversity loss escalating globally, a step change is needed in our capacity to accurately monitor species populations across ecosystems. Robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) offer technological solutions that may substantially advance terrestrial biodiversity monitoring, but this potential is yet to be considered systematically. We used a modified Delphi technique to synthesize knowledge from 98 biodiversity experts and 31 RAS experts, who identified the major methodological barriers that currently hinder monitoring, and explored the opportunities and challenges that RAS offer in overcoming these barriers. Biodiversity experts identified four barrier categories: site access, species and individual identification, data handling and storage, and power and network availability. Robotics experts highlighted technologies that could overcome these barriers and identified the developments needed to facilitate RAS-based autonomous biodiversity monitoring. Some existing RAS could be optimized relatively easily to survey species but would require development to be suitable for monitoring of more ‘difficult’ taxa and robust enough to work under uncontrolled conditions within ecosystems. Other nascent technologies (for instance, new sensors and biodegradable robots) need accelerated research. Overall, it was felt that RAS could lead to major progress in monitoring of terrestrial biodiversity by supplementing rather than supplanting existing methods. Transdisciplinarity needs to be fostered between biodiversity and RAS experts so that future ideas and technologies can be codeveloped effectively. © The Author(s) 2025.

The water supply of many countries in Southeast Asia has significant water problems and it is being affected, amongst others, by both high salinity and high arsenic concentrations in groundwater. This study presents an overview of a laboratory study using a lab-scale membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) unit and arsenic-spiked model water. CDI is a novel technology for the electro-chemical desalination of brackish water with low energy consumption. In addition, removal performance of co-ions (NH+4;Mn2+) typically found in groundwater in the region, and that have a negative influence on other conventional arsenic removal technologies, were also studied with increasing concentrations of NaCl (0–2.0 g L−1). Results show a high dependency of the removal efficiency of selected ions on the TDS concentration, resulting in lower adsorption rates for substances in µg-range such as arsenic. © 2018, CRC Press/Balkema. Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a critical issue and one that causes great concern around the world with many negative health impacts on the human body. In-situ subsurface arsenic immobilization by aeration has shown to be a promising, convenient technology with high treatment efficiency. In contrast to most of other As-remediation technologies, in-situ subsurface immobilization offers the advantage of negligible waste production and hence has the potential of being a long-term, sustainable treatment option. A pilot scale plant (capacity = 2 m3 d−1) for the subsurface arsenic removal (SAR) was tested in the Mekong Delta region in South Vietnam. Within the first two weeks of operation the initial concentrations of 81 ± 14 µgAs L−1 were successfully lowered to below the guideline value limit for drinking water recommended by the WHO of 10 µg L−1. Results indicated adsorption and co-precipitation with iron oxides as the principal mechanism responsible for the arsenic removal. Evaluation of the results demonstrates the feasibility of in-situ technology for arsenic mitigation. However, difficulties in manganese removal arose due to existing high ammonia concentrations and natural occurring geochemical reducing conditions. © 2018, CRC Press/Balkema. All rights reserved.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA’s M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2REarth) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5%, 10%, 10% for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO‘s target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile towards the end of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases. © The Author(s) 2025.
