In this paper, a stable indirect adaptive interval type-2 fuzzy sliding mode control (AIT2-FSMC) is introduced for a class of nonlinear systems. In the presence of uncertainties, especially under noisy and external disturbances, interval type-2 fuzzy system can be helpful in approximating unknown nonlinear system functions. To achieve more efficiency, the proposed controller is designed to use the targeted combination of sliding mode as a robust controller, interval type-2 fuzzy system as a universal approximator, and adaptive control law as an online parameter's tuner. The interval type-2 adaptation law is derived using Lyapunov approach, and mathematical analysis proves the closed loop system to be asymptotically stable. Although stability of the controller is provided via Lyapunov approach, optimization is required for performance improvement. Genetic algorithm (GA), as a population-based approach, is then used to optimize the parameters of the interval Type-2 fuzzy sets. Simulation analysis shows that the optimized IT2FSMC can reach improved performance. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a facial expression recognition approach to recognize the affective states. Feature extraction is a vital step in the recognition of facial expressions. In this work, a novel facial feature extraction method based on Intersecting Cortical Model (ICM) is proposed. The ICM network which is a simplified model of Pulse-Coupled Neural Network (PCNN) model has great potential to perform pixel grouping. In the proposed method the normalized face image is segmented into two regions including mouth, eyes using fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM). Segmented face images are imported into an ICM network with 300 iteration number and pulse image produced by the ICM network is chosen as the face code, then the support vector machine (SVM) is trained for discrimination of different expressions to distinguish the different affective states. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, the face image dataset is constructed and the proposed algorithm is used to classify seven basic expressions including happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and hate The experimental results confirm that ICM network has great potential for facial feature extraction and the proposed method for human affective recognition is promising. Fast feature extraction is the most advantage of this method which can be useful for real world application. © 2011 IEEE.

We propose a novel algorithm for gene regulatory network inference. Gene Regulatory Network (GRN) inference is approximating the combined effect of different genes in a specific genome data. GRNs are nonlinear, dynamic and noisy. Time-series data has been frequently used for GRN modeling. Due to the function approximation and feedback nature of GRN, a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model is used. RNN training is a complicated task. We propose a multi agent system for RNN training. The agents of the proposed multi agent system trainer are separate swarms of particles building up a multi population Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. We compare the proposed algorithm with a similar algorithm that uses RNN with standard PSO for training. The results show improvements using the E. coli SOS dataset. © 2011 IEEE.

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has received great attention in recent years as a successful global search algorithm, due to its simple implementation and inexpensive computation overhead. However, PSO still suffers from the problem of early convergence to locally optimal solutions. Extremal Optimization (EO) is a local search algorithm that has been able to solve NP hard optimization problems. The combination of PSO with EO benefits from the exploration ability of PSO and the exploitation ability of EO, and reduces the probability of early trapping in the local optima. In other words, due to the EO's strong local search capability, the PSO focuses on its global search by a new mutation operator that prevents loss of variety among the particles. This is done when the particle's parameters exceed the problem conditions. The resulting hybrid algorithm Mutated PSO-EO (MPSO-EO) is then applied to the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) as a NP hard multimodal optimization problem. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with several other metaheuristic methods on 3 well known TSP databases and 10 unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions. © 2011 IEEE.

The World Wide Web has created a new media for mass marketing that can also be highly customized to online customers' needs and expectations. Recommender systems (RS) play an important role in this area. Here, we aim to establish a genre-based collaborative RS to automatically suggest and rank a list of appropriate items (movies) to a user based on the user profile and the past voting patterns of other users with similar tastes. The contribution of this paper is using genre based information in a hybrid fuzzy-Bayesian network collaborative RS. The interest to the different genres is computed based on a hybrid user model. The similarity of likeminded users according to the fuzzy distance and also Pearson correlation coefficient is involved in a Bayesian network. © 2010 IEEE.

Nowadays, wireless sensor networks are widely used in a variety of applications such as in military, vehicle tracking, disaster management and environmental monitoring. Accurate estimation of the sensor position can be crucial in many of these applications. In this research, we propose a localization algorithm based on probabilistic fuzzy logic systems (PFLS) for range-free localization. The algorithm utilizes received signal strength (RSS) from the anchor nodes embedded with variant degrees of environmental noise. The proposed system is compared with another algorithm based on Fuzzy Logic systems (FLS) against variant amount of noise. Simulation results demonstrate that FLS can be much more accurate than PFLS method if the environment is noise-free. However, as the environmental noise increases, the PFLS reaches better performance. © 2010 IEEE.

We propose the use of a hierarchical adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (HANFIS) for automated speaker verification of Persian speakers from their English pronunciation of words. The proposed method uses three classes of sound properties consisting of linear prediction coefficients (LPC), word time- length, intensity and pitch, as well as frequency properties from FFT analysis. Actual audio data is collected from fourteen Persian speakers who spoke English. False acceptance ratio and false rejection ratio as are evaluated for various HANFIS trained with different radius. Results indicate that vowel sounds can be a good indicator for more accurate speaker verification. Finally, the hierarchical architecture is shown to considerably improve performance than ANFIS. © 2010 IFIP.
