This work introduces analysis and evaluation of an interesting, challenging, and interdisciplinary, pedagogical issue. That's originated from categorization of the achievement diversity of students' (individual differences), equivalently students' Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO). This students' academic diversity affected in classrooms by three interactive learning/teaching approaches (orientations) namely: surface, deep, and strategic. Assessment of these approaches has been performed via realistic simulation adopting Artificial Neural Networks (ANN s ) modeling considering Hebbian rule for coincidence detection learning. That modeling results in interesting mathematical analogy of two effective learning performance factors with students' achievement individual differences. Firstly, the effect of two brain functional phenomena; namely long term Potentiation (LTP) and depression (LTD). That's in accordance with opening time for crossing N-methyl-D-aspartate NMDA observed at hippocampus brain area. Secondly, the effect of neurons' number associated with diverse learning/teaching environments comprise the dichotomy (extroversion/introversion). This dichotomy has been investigated as the external and internal environmental learning conditions. The obtained simulation results concerned with student's diversity attitudes (extroversion/introversion). They shown to be in well agreement with recently published results after performing a case study at an engineering institution in Egypt. Finally, introduced study, aims mainly to present interesting analysis of brain's functional development based students' individual differences, and learning abilities.

This paper addresses an interdisciplinary approach integrating evaluation of an educational issue with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling. Specifically, it is concerned with ANN modeling of two computer Assisted Learning (CAL) packages/modules using various learning rate values. Both packages are considered for teaching a mathematical topic: “How to solve long division problem?”. They have been submitted at the fifth grade classroom level in elementary schools (as a case study with or without associated teacher's voice). Furthermore, after the application of the suggested CAL packages, practical findings have been compared with classical learning obtained results. Interestingly, all findings are shown to be in agreement with simulation results after running the introduced realistic ANN model. Finally, this work investigated well how measured mathematical teaching quality could be fairly improved via assessment of two learning parameters' performance (achievement level & response time).

The mode decision process has a significant effect on the quality and complexity of a video encoder. The conventional method that fully codes each macro block for different modes results in the best quality performance, but it suffers from high computational complexity. On the other hand, some other methods ignore the residual part and use the prediction data, or adopt early mode selection approaches in order to reduce the computational cost. These approaches have a negative impact on the coding performance. In this paper, we have used a simple model for the residual coding part and proposed a two-piece R-D model for a macro block. Based on this model, we have introduced a mode decision algorithm that reduces the bit-rate by up to 11.62% at the expense of just 0.5% computational overhead. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper studies different uses of two cooperating relays to improve the secrecy rate of a wiretap channel. These two relays are assumed to perform only simple functions: either amplify-and-forward (AF) or jamming. Complex functions such as decode-and-forward (DF) are not considered. We study three modes of cooperation: i) cooperative jamming (CJ), ii) AF-aided beamforming and iii) mixed AF-aided beamforming and CJ, all with individual relay power constraints. While i) is known in the literature, our efforts are spent on ii) and iii). In particular, for iii), we assume that the jamming signals in two communication stages are correlated, giving rise to improved performances. We also propose a heuristic approach for selecting the appropriate cooperating mode. Simulation results illustrate the performance gain of each scheme under different channel conditions and the effectiveness of the proposed mode selection method. © 2012 IEEE.

A cellular multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system is studied, in which each base station (BS) transmits to some of the users so that each user receives its intended signal from a subset of the BSs. This scenario is referred to as network MIMO with partial cooperation since only a subset of the BSs is able to coordinate their transmission toward any user. The focus of this paper is on the optimization of linear beamforming strategies at the BSs and at the users for network MIMO with partial cooperation. Individual power constraints at the BSs are enforced, along with constraints on the number of streams per user. It is first shown that the system is equivalent to a MIMO interference channel with generalized linear constraints (MIMO-IFC-GC). The problems of maximizing the sum rate (SR) and minimizing the weighted sum mean square error (WSMSE) of the data estimates are nonconvex, and suboptimal solutions with reasonable complexity need to be devised. Based on this, suboptimal techniques that aim at maximizing the SR for the MIMO-IFC-GC are reviewed from recent literature and extended to the MIMO-IFC-GC where necessary. Novel designs that aim at minimizing the WSMSE are then proposed. Extensive numerical simulations are provided to compare the performance of the considered schemes for realistic cellular systems. © 2012 IEEE.

Day-ahead DSM techniques in the smart grid allow the supply-side to know in advance an estimation of the amount of energy to be provided to the demand-side during the upcoming day. However, a pure day-ahead optimization process cannot accommodate potential real-time deviations from the expected energy consumption by the demand-side users, neither the randomness of their renewable sources. This paper proposes a day-ahead bidding system based on a pricing model that combines: i) a price per unit of energy depending on the day-ahead bid energy needs of the demand-side users, and ii) a penalty system that limits the real-time fluctuations around the bid energy loads. In this day-ahead bidding process, demand-side users, possibly having energy production and storage capabilities, are interested in minimizing their expected monetary expense. The resulting optimization problem is formulated as a noncooperative game and is solved by means of suitable distributed algorithms. Finally, the proposed procedure is tested in a realistic setup.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTMRI) is a non-invasive method for investigating the brain white matter structure. It can be used to evaluate fiber bundles in the brain but in the regions with crossing fibers, it fails. To resolve this problem, high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) with a large number of diffusion encoding directions is used and for reconstruction, the Q-ball method is applied. In this method, orientation distribution function (ODF) of fibers can be calculated. Mathematical models play a crucial role in the field of ODF. For instance, in registering Q-ball images for applications like group analysis or atlas construction, one needs to interpolate ODFs. To this end, principal diffusion directions (PDDs) of each ODF are needed. In this paper, PDDs are defined as vectors that connect the corresponding local maxima of ODF values. Then, ODFs are interpolated using PDDs. The proposed method is evaluated and compared with previous protocols. Experimental results show that the proposed interpolation algorithm preserves the principal direction of fiber tracts without producing any deviations in the tracts. It is shown that changes in the entropy of the interpolated ODFs are almost linear and the bloating effect (blurring of the principal directions) can be removed.

This paper presents an implementation of 2-D chaotic Baker map using different modes of operations after applying the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) on digital images. The proposed image cryptosystem implements the chaotic Baker map scrambling using three different modes of operation; Cipher Block Chain (CDC), Cipher Feed-Back (CFB), Output Feed-Back (OFB), in which the Initialization Vector (IV) works as the main key. We examine its implementation for digital images along with its detailed security analysis. The security analysis includes the statistical analysis, the histogram analysis, the correlation coefficient metric, the maximum deviation metric, the irregular deviation metric, the noise immunity, the processing time, and the key space analysis. Experiments and results verify and prove that the proposed image cryptosystem is highly secure from the cryptographic viewpoint, more immune to noise, has high key sensitivity, and takes less processing time.

How to remove detector side channel attacks has been a notoriously hard problem in quantum cryptography. Here, we propose a simple solution to this problem—measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (QKD). It not only removes all detector side channels, but also doubles the secure distance with conventional lasers. Our proposal can be implemented with standard optical components with low detection efficiency and highly lossy channels. In contrast to the previous solution of full device independent QKD, the realization of our idea does not require detectors of near unity detection efficiency in combination with a qubit amplifier (based on teleportation) or a quantum nondemolition measurement of the number of photons in a pulse. Furthermore, its key generation rate is many orders of magnitude higher than that based on full device independent QKD. The results show that long-distance quantum cryptography over say 200 km will remain secure even with seriously flawed detectors.
