In this paper, the second-order statistics such as the autocorrelation function and correlation coefficient of the instantaneous mutual information (IMI) are studied, in 2times2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-varying Rayleigh flat fading channels, assuming general non-isotropic scattering environments. Exact closed-form expressions are derived, as well as asymptotic approximations in low- and high-SNR regimes. Monte Carlo simulations are provided to verify the accuracy of those derived analytical results.

OFDM system suffers from significant performance degradation due to the presence of phase noise, which causes the common phase error (CPE) and intercarrier interference (ICI) among subcarriers. Various phase noise analysis and mitigation schemes were presented for OFDM in the literature, which only concerned with phase noise generated at the receiver, assuming the transmitter noise is negligible. However, this is inappropriate for the uplink application, where transmitter employs relatively low cost local oscillators. In this paper, we aim to analyze an OFDM system with phase noise at both transmitter and receiver in a WSSUS multipath fading channel. Results show that such system is equivalent to an OFDM system with phase noise at receiver only, hence simplifies the system model and provides an easy way to examine phase noise effect at both transmitter and receiver.

In this paper, novel channel estimation schemes using uncorrelated periodic complementary sets of unitary sequences are proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) frequency-selective fading channels. When the additive noise is Gaussian, the proposed best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) achieves the minimum possible classical Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB), if the channel coefficients are regarded as unknown deterministics. On the other hand, the proposed linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator attains the minimum possible Bayesian CRLB, when the underlying channel coefficients are Gaussian and independent of the additive Gaussian noise. The proposed channel estimators can be implemented with very low complexity via FFT, which makes them very suitable for practical systems such as, but not limited to, MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) employs a set of subcarriers for the information symbol transmission in parallel via the multipath fading channels. Due to its spectral efficiency and robustness over multipath channels, OFDM has been adopted for broadband communications. However, for high-speed mobility, the time-varying channels pose a performance limitation to the wireless OFDM systems. In this paper, we investigate the OFDM system performance in the time-varying channels where the intercarrier interference (ICI) occurs;we study the impacts of the time-varying multipath fadings together with the multiple Doppler spreads. According to our analysis and simulation results, the maximum OFDM symbol normalized Doppler frequency must be less than 0.04 to achieve the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR)=20dB or larger. As the maximum OFDM symbol normalized Doppler frequency increases, the OFDM system performance degrades dramatically. Different irreducible symbol error rate (SER) floors about 10{sup}(-2) for QPSK-OFDM schemes and 10{sup}(-1) for 16QAM-OFDM schemes would arise in case that the maximum OFDM symbol normalized Doppler frequency is fixed at 0.06.

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is a scheme to automatically identify the modulation types of the transmitted signals by observing the received data samples in the presence of noise and fading channels. Nowadays, AMC plays an important role in both cooperative and non-cooperative communication applications. Very often, multipath fading channels result in the severe AMC performance degradation or induce large classification errors. The negative impacts of multipath fading channels on AMC have been discussed in the existing literature but no solution has ever been proposed so far to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, we propose a new robust AMC algorithm, which applies higher-order statistics (HOS) in a generic framework for blind channel estimation and pattern recognition. The advantage of our new algorithm is that, by carefully designing the essential features needed for AMC, we don't really have to acquire the complete channel information and therefore it can be feasible without any a priori information in practice. The Monte Carlo simulation results show that our new AMC algorithm can achieve the much better classification accuracy than the existing AMC techniques.

The intercarrier interference (ICI) matrix for the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems usually has a fairly large dimension and changes over time for mobile communications. Obviously, the traditional least-square solution for the ICI matrix estimation based on the pseudo-inverse operation has its limitation. In addition, the provision of a sufficiently long training sequence to estimate the complete ICI matrix is not feasible, since it will result in severe throughput reduction. In this paper, we design padded maximum-length shift-register sequences (pm-sequences) to serve as the training sequences for the ICI estimation. Such new training sequences will induce the diagonal correlation matrices which can lead to the optimal estimation. We propose a new distributive allocation scheme of short pm-sequences for the ICI estimation with a linear ICI estimate interpolation, which can lead to the multi-ICI-vector estimation to combat the realistic non-circulant ICI matrix problem, where almost all other existing schemes such as the ICI matrix estimation using the Hadamard sequences, the convolutional coder/decoder and the ICI self-cancellation coder/decoder could not perform effectively

A design is presented for a multichannel integrated receiver/reconstruction system for MRI that alleviates the concerns associated with commercial solutions regarding cost, scalability and the ability to access intermediate data. Up to 16 MR signals are sampled directly at RF, with digital down-conversion and image reconstruction performed by a single-chip field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Imaging researchers can readily access data from any point in the processing chain over a network, and the design can scale modularly in blocks of 8n or 16n channels

The scarcity of available spectrum in the 2-11 GHz frequency range and the continuously increasing number of users that require broadband communication services suggest that emerging fixed-broadband wireless access (F-BWA) networks will be deployed with aggressive frequency re-use to cope with capacity demands. In this context, co-channel interference may arise in high levels compromising the system's capacity and robust operation. Interference is further increased when limited directionality terminal antennas are employed to support non line-of-sight operation and in the case where an adaptive-time division duplex is selected for efficient radio resource management in asymmetric and time-varying traffic conditions. In this paper frequency channel assignment (CA) and antenna polarization assignment (PA) are considered as a means of mitigating interference. Two novel CA schemes that consider the distinct characteristics of F-BWA are proposed;the rotated-interleaved channel assignment and the non-uniform channel assignment. According to statistical interference simulation analysis the proposed schemes are more efficient in suppressing interference, achieving higher capacity compared to existing schemes while incurring no further complexity. In addition, instead of exploiting the performance of CA and PA schemes independently a framework for a joint CA-PA consideration is presented, where for a particular CA scheme an optimized PA pattern is developed. Results show that this approach improves the CA-PA interoperability increasing the overall performance. The efficiency of the proposed schemes is investigated for both FDD and adaptive-TDD schemes and is verified for various sectorization, frequency re-use and terminal antenna directivity configurations to ensure compatibility with different deployment scenarios. © Springer 2006.

We propose a new semi-automatic segmentation strategy on echocardiographic images, which combines a recently introduced gradient vector flow (GVF) fast geometric active contour (GAC) model and a modified level sets methods applied to echocardiographic data by Corsi et al.. We call it adaptive GVF GAC model. We note that echocardiographic images are characterized by high levels of speckle noise, weakly-defined boundaries and severe gaps. We show that the new method, adapted for single object segmentation, can provide significantly improved performance over a competing level set method, and that was in turn shown to perform better than the original gradient vector flow method. The new method modifies the advection term in the speed function adoptively by estimating how close the propagated curve is to the target boundaries. We show both synthetic and real, freehand ultrasound image and echocardiographic image examples to illustrate the robustness and accuracy of the new segmentation method

In this paper, a generalized polyphase (GP) structure based design method for Mth-band FIR filters is presented A few new transform matrices are proposed as seed matrix for generating a GP structure, which overcomes some limitations of the commonly used Hadamard transform. Under the framework of a general GP structure realization, the relationship between the original filter and the interpolator as well as the constituent filter is revealed from the frequency response perspective. This relationship facilitates the design problem of GP structure based FIR filters, since the original large-tap filler is reduced to a number of short-length constituent filters which can easily be designed according to the derived specifications. In particular, a closed-form frequency specification for the design of Mth-band fillers is obtained. Design examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
