Fast block motion estimation algorithms are needed for real-time implementations of video coding standards due to the high computational complexity of the full-search algorithm for block motion estimation. In this paper, an algorithm using 8-bit partial sums of 16 luminance values for a fast block motion estimation is proposed. The technique of using the partial sums is employed to reduce the computational complexity of not only the full-search algorithm but also some of the fast block motion estimation algorithms while maintaining their accuracy. Furthermore, it is shown that the byte-type data-parallelism on an SIMD architecture can be utilized to access and process these partial sums concurrently to accelerate the process of motion estimation. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate that the use of the partial sums can accelerate the execution of the full-search, three-step search, and four-step search algorithms on an SIMD architecture significantly.

Due to the high computational requirement of the full-search algorithm for block motion estimation, fast block motion estimation algorithms are needed for real-time implementations of the video coding standards. Recently, a three-step search algorithm for block motion estimation has been proposed in the literature. In this paper, a fast three-step search algorithm is proposed to further reduce the computational complexity of the three-step search algorithm with no loss of accuracy. By using a multilevel vector partial sums and lower bounds in the proposed algorithm, a large number of possible candidate motion vectors are discarded while still retaining the optimal motion vector of the three-step search algorithm. It is shown that not all the levels of partial sums and lower bounds are needed. A method to select these vector partial sums and lower bounds are also presented. Simulations of the proposed algorithm are carried out for various benchmark video sequences and the results demonstrate that the new algorithm can reduce the computational complexity of the three-step search algorithm by 20 to 60 percent with no loss of accuracy.

Current video coding standards of H.263, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 employ the block motion estimation technique to decorrelate video sequences. Since the full-search algorithm for block motion estimation has a great deal of computational complexity, it is not suitable for real-time implementations. Some fast block motion estimation algorithms, such as the selective elimination algorithm, the multilevel successive elimination algorithm, and the vector-based algorithm, have been proposed in the literature. These algorithms reduce the computational complexity of the full search algorithm by utilizing a lower bound for the block-matching criterion of the mean absolute difference (MAD). However, the partial sums for the computation of the lower bound in these algorithms cannot take advantage of the byte-type data parallelism in the existing single instruction multiple data (SIMD) technique. In this paper, a new lower bound for the MAD is established, and this is achieved with the following three objectives in mind: (i) the partial sums can be used to calculate a lower bound to discard the computation of the MAD, (ii) the partial sums are of only 8 bits and saved in a contiguous memory space, and (in) eight partial sums can be processed concurrently in a single 64-bit SIMD register. The new lower bound can be employed in conjunction with an existing block motion estimation algorithm to accelerate the execution of the algorithm without any loss of accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate that the above scheme can accelerate the execution of the vector-based fast algorithm, selective elimination algorithm, and full search algorithm by about 10, 20, and 40 percents, respectively.

While DiffServ is gaining ground, QoS related operations have been constantly changing. The proportional differentiation model, as a special case of DiffServ, was suggested to enforce controllable and consistent QoS differentiation. The article investigates the delay differentiation perspective of the proportional model. It first derives the properties of the average delay differences among service classes. Second, simulations and analysis are applied to reveal more fundamental facts of two typical delay differentiation mechanisms. Last, their short-term and long-term delay differentiation performances are evaluated.

A physical understanding of mobility pattern differences among DNA fragments of different length drives the formulation of a complete statistical model for mobility shifts correction (MSC). Algorithms are then developed that compute mobility shifts and correct the raw trace, leaving significant peaks aligned i.e. in correct order and centered with respect to their neighbors. The fully automated MSC method we develop is shown to improve substantially base-calling performance in the first 100-200 bp of DNA sequencing reads while it does not require any dye chemistry specific calibration procedure. This is very encouraging since it is known that lack of adequate MSC is the main source of base-calling errors in the early part of a DNA sequencing read.

As the DiffServ architecture is gaining ground, traffic engineering requires major adjustments. In addition, the measurement-based strategy gas been widely adopted owing to its advantages of flexibility and easy adaptation. This article reviews measurement-based dropping schemes. Based on the definition and investigation of the "packet shortage" phenomenon, an enhanced dropping scheme for the proportional differentiated packet loss, referred to as "debt-aware," is proposed. Simulation parameters, as compared to a typical proportional dropping mechanism. More simulations have been applied to demonstrate the merits of this improved method.

Proposed and studied in this work is a reduced complexity maximum likelihood (ML) detection scheme, which uses a predecoder guided local exhaustive search, for V-BLAST systems. A polygon searching algorithm and an ordered successive interference cancellation (O-SIC) sphere searching algorithm are major components of the proposed multistep ML detectors. The effects of predecoder's performance on the total decoding complexity was studied by simulation. The complexity of the proposed algorithm depends on the operating signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the system. At reasonable high SNRs, its complexity is comparable to that of O-SIC algorithm, a commonly used decoding algorithm for V-BLAST. For V-BLAST systems using a large number of transmit antennas, we also propose a new detection algorithm termed ordered group-wise interference cancellation (O-GIC) to further reduce decoding complexity. The O-GIC based detection scheme is not a ML detection scheme, however, its performance is shown to outperform that of the O-SIC.

In this paper, we present a new fast maximum likelihood (ML) detection algorithm for quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes ( QO-STBC). Observed in a transformed signal space, the QO-STBC encoder embeds information into a group of orthogonal subspaces of rank two. We propose a fast technique that separates information embedded in each rank-two subspace by a simple linear processing, and decodes the separated information independently. For a multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system, decoding algorithm decomposes the original N /spl times/ N system into N/2 parallel 2 /spl times/ 2 MIMO sub-systems without information loss followed by MRC. It then detects symbols contained in each 2 /spl times/ 2 MIMO sub-system using a sphere decoder of reduced computational complexity.

We present a novel space-time orthogonal coding scheme with full-rate and full-diversity on a QPSK constellation for communication systems with four transmit antennas. We also study the performance of the newly proposed coding scheme in comparison with that of half rate full diversity orthogonal codes as well as full rate half diversity quasi-orthogonal codes. We demonstrate that the proposed coding scheme not only offers full rate but also outperforms the other two schemes when SNR increases.

In this paper, an efficient feedforward implementation scheme for joint carrier and frame synchronization in MPSK systems is presented. By inserting a unique word in the beginning of each frame, a fast carrier synchronization is achieved without requiring extra computations for the frequency estimation. The phase synchronization is also achieved by exploiting the unique word for initial phase acquisition followed by phase tracking. The proposed scheme is simulated for 8PSK demodulation showing its effectiveness and low implementation complexity.
