In a regular multicarrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) receiver, timing of the starting point of the desired signal must be found with small error in order to demodulate correctly the information carried by different subcarriers. This requires a complicated timing acquisition for each user in the receiver of the uplink MC-CDMA system due to the randomness of delays. We remove this requirement for the uplink receiver by providing a method using partial sampling demodulation. The proposed partial sampling minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver is shown to have stronger capability of both interference suppression and near-far resistance than that of a regular symbol receiver The proposed receiver can be implemented adaptively by using a least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm. A training sequence is required to achieve initial adaptation.

We assess the prospects for detecting a dry microburst core in the vicinity of an airport using a super-fast scanning (SFS) technique. In particular we propose a 20-beam SFS radar system and develop a system specification delivering a similar performance to a conventional mechanical scanning terminal Doppler weather radar (CMS-TDWR). The performance is compared in terms of the accuracy by which the three spectral moments can be estimated. These parameters were calculated using the signal models generally accepted by the industry for a microburst, for both scanning systems, and sampling at the same range intervals. The simulated results show that a 20-beam SFS X-band radar could update the weather information at twenty times the rate of the CMS-TDWR, but the radar would need a peak power of 45 kW. Whilst this peak power requirement is considerably less than the CMS-TDWR radar, this may be difficult to achieve for an electronically scanned array. The research emphasis is on developing and analysing the potential of the SFS technique, and this technique can be applied to improve the weather radar scanning rate once phased array radars of adequate peak power are feasible.

The Bayesian data reduction algorithm is applied to a collection of thirty real-life data sets primarily found at the University of California at Irvine's Repository of Machine Learning databases. The algorithm works by finding the best performing quantization complexity of the feature vectors, and this makes it necessary to discretize all continuous valued features. Therefore, results are given by showing the initial quantization of the continuous valued features that yields best performance. Further, the Bayesian data reduction algorithm is also compared to a conventional linear classifier, which does not discretize any feature values. In general, the Bayesian data reduction algorithm outperforms the linear classifier by obtaining a lower probability of error, as averaged over all thirty data sets.

We present a new steganographic technique for covert communications. The technique embeds the hidden information in the DFT domain after permuting the image pixels in the spatial domain using a key. The permutation process introduces randomness into the cover image and results in a significant increase in the number of transform coefficients that can be used to transmit the hidden information. The hidden information is embedded using a quantization technique. The perceptual and statistical properties of the cover and the stego images remain similar for small quantization steps. The security of the system is examined against known stego attack.

In this paper we present the design of deterministic Test Pattern Generation (TPG) units which can be exploited in a Built-In Self-Test (BIST) scheme for memory Neighborhood Pattern Sensitive Fault (NPSF) testing. New algorithms for computing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) spectra along different directions are derived and implemented. For computing the DFT spectrum along any given direction (containing N DFT frequencies), a new algorithm is presented that requires N(N-1) additions and a single 1-D FFT. As expected, for a single direction, the directional FFT algorithm is significantly faster than standard 2-D FFT algorithms that compute the entire spectrum (all results are compared against FFTW and FFTPACK). A scalable extension of the unidirectional algorithm for computing the entire DFT spectrum is also derived and implemented. The three most promising features of the new algorithm are that: (i) computation scales nearly linearly with the number of DFT frequencies computed, (ii) the algorithm uses a reduced number of multiplications (yet uses more additions), and (iii) it is more accurate.

A new approach in the enhancement/suppression of narrowband signals, based on the combination of the maximum output SNR and the least-squares optimizing criteria, has been presented previously. The resulting statistically-optimal null filters (SONFs) have also been presented as recursive filters. Because of their time-varying nature, optimality under the MSE criterion and the similarity to the RLS method, it is anticipated that the SONFs may be related to the well known Kalman filter. In this paper, we show the SONFs to be an alternate implementation of the Kalman filter. For the first order case we show this analytically. Due to mathematical intractability, for the higher order case we set up the mathematical formulations and use simulations for verification.

In this work, groupwise successive interference cancellation scheme for multirate CDMA signals is proposed. The proposed detector operation is based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. It has the promise of decision feedback interference cancellation for superior performance compared to the linear MMSE detection at the cost of a moderate increase in complexity. In groupwise detection, users are grouped according to their processing gain or data rate, i.e., users with the same processing gain or data rate are grouped together, then detected. Users with the lowest processing gain or highest data rate are detected first, neglecting the presence of the other users in the system. Interference between the groups is cancelled in a successive order. The BER of the groupwise successive MMSE interference canceler is compared with the BER multirate linear MMSE detector and multirate decorrelating detector. The results show that the groupwise successive MMSE interference canceler yields better performance than the multirate linear MMSE detector and multirate decorrelating detector. When the system is highly loaded, the groupwise successive MMSE interference canceler can offer a better performance than the multirate linear MMSE detector and the multirate conventional detector.

In order to rapidly produce, using high level synthesis, quality silicon implementations of signal Flow Graphs (SFGs) for large size, real-world signal/image processing problems, the Hardware Description Language (HDL) representations of SFG nodes should possess certain desirable characteristics. We have embedded in DG2VHDL, a design tool developed by the authors which translates automatically an algorithm's Dependence Graph into synthesizable VHDL models for SFG arrays, an algorithm that formulates the minimal design complexity nested loop structure (to be defined herein) for each SFG processor. This representation will, in all but some pathological cases, produce post-synthesis hardware whose area scales near optimally with increasing problem size. Furthermore, the time and memory required for the synthesis of such models does not increase with the problem size. A polynomial time heuristic is presented which finds (almost always) the minimal design complexity loop representation of SFG nodes.

A new spread spectrum receiver with narrow-band interference suppression is proposed. This receiver also considers information from previous bit samples beside those from current bit. Closed-form analytical expression for the output signal-to-interference ratio is derived under the condition of single tone interference. Analytical results show that the new spread spectrum receiver outperforms other previous NBI suppression techniques.
