Testing path delay faults (PDFs) in VLSI circuits is becoming an important issue as we enter the deep submicron age. However, it is difficult in general since the number of faults is normally very large and most faults are either hard to sensitize or are unstable. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic PDF model. We investigate probability functions for the wire and path delay size to model the fault effect in the circuit under test. In our approach, the delay fault size is assumed to be randomly distributed. An analytical model is proposed to evaluate the PDF coverage. We show that the delay sizes of the untested paths are actually reduced if these paths are conjoined with other tested good paths. Therefore, using our approach, path selection and synthesis of PDF testable circuits can be done more accurately. Also, given a test set, more accurate fault coverage can be predicted by calculating the mean delay of the paths.

The "Bootstrap" algorithm provides an efficient adaptive multi-user detection approach to solve the near-far problem in CDMA communication systems. The weight vectors are controlled by a simple decorrelation scheme which minimizes the correlation between their outputs and the hard limited version of the other outputs, respectively. It has been shown that the "Bootstrap" algorithm provides performance similar to that of MMSE with low complexity. In this work, the convergence and stability of the "Bootstrap" algorithm is considered. Sufficient conditions for the code cross-correlation and the step size are provided.

This paper investigates the performance of a new adaptive call admission policy based on a window-measurement estimation of the status of the buffer at the base station where two classes of customers (voice and data) are multiplexed into L servers. In this work, we interrelate physical limitations of the base stations (i.e., the number of transmission and reception modems), call and burst level traffic, instantaneous ATM buffer conditions, and end-to end bit error performance. Considering these parameters, we combine them all in one queueing problem and devise a new hybrid congestion based call admission policy. This policy is investigated in conjunction with CDMA integrated networks utilizing the IS-95 transmission/reception platforms. The results show that the proposed policy does maintain the QoS required for the networks under expected traffic load.

Multi-code CDMA (MC-CDMA) is proposed as an alternative multiple access scheme which provides the flexibility, high data rates, and bandwidth-on-demand features necessary in next-generation wireless integrated services networks. In a conventional MC-CDMA configuration (e.g., in IS-95B) a user can transmit information in multiples (M times) of a basic data rate by using M orthogonal supplemental DS-CDMA channels. In this paper, motivated by the remarkable performance of turbo codes with large interleaving lengths in AWGN channels, we investigate the performance of a MC-CDMA system employing different concatenated encoding schemes combined with iterative decoding. Furthermore, we examine the frame error rate performance of the various schemes by considering CRC codewords in each of the M frames corresponding to each data block. We show that coding and interleaving at the block level improves the block error rate (BlER) performance, especially when turbo schemes are used, while the extra CRC overhead is beneficial mainly when convolutional codes are used.

We consider wireless communication systems that employ multiple transmitting and receiving antennas to achieve spatial diversity and to increase the data rate through fading channels. In particular, we focus on a system with N transmitting antennas and M receiving antennas. We consider the design and performance evaluation of several detection algorithms for recovering the original data from the received signals on the M antennas. These algorithms include the optimum maximum likelihood detector and suboptimal reduced-complexity detectors such as the MMSE detector and a detector based on maximal ratio combining. We also consider coded systems.

The remarkable performance of turbo codes for low SNRs in AWGN channels has encouraged the application of turbo codes to systems operating in different kind of channels. In this paper we consider an IS-95-based CDMA system operating in a multipath Rayleigh fading channel. We replace the convolutional encoder by a parallel and a serial turbo encoding scheme, and by a serial concatenation of an outer convolutional and an inner parallel turbo code, and instead of the Viterbi decoder we use iterative decoding based on the MAP algorithm. We perform BER and FER comparisons by varying system parameters such as the constraint length of the component convolutional codes, the interleaver lengths, and the wireless channel fading rate. The results obtained show that the concatenated schemes outperform the more complex convolutional scheme even for relatively short interleaving lengths, especially when FER is the desired figure of merit.
