Interference adaptation dynamic channel allocation (IA-DCA) schemes have been shown by several researchers to be a promising channel assignment method. However, these investigations were nor supported by theoretical studies. This paper attempts to fill that void. In order to analyze the performance of IA-DCA in the optimum case, a concept called channel reuse zone is introduced and an idealized interference adaptation maximum packing method is proposed. We derived a performance bound for IA-DCA in forward link by using this method with a simplified propagation model.

The most important factor in configuring an optimum radial basis function (RBF) network is the appropriate selection of the number of neural units in the hidden layer. This paper proposes a novel algorithm called the scattering-based clustering (SBC) algorithm, in which the frequency sensitive competitive learning (FSCL) algorithm is first applied to let the neural units converge. Scatter matrices of the clustered data are then used to compute the sphericity for each k, where k is the number of clusters. The optimum number of neural units to be used in the hidden layer is then obtained. A comparative study is done between the SBC algorithm and rival penalizes competitive learning (RPCL) algorithm, and the result shows that the SBC algorithm outperforms other algorithms such as CL, FSCL, and RPCL.

A fully programmable switched-current IIR filter using switched-current delay-multiplies units is described. The characteristics of the filter are fully programmable by simply changing the ratios of the coefficient transistors. To reduce the effect of non-ideal characteristics of MOS transistors, a high-performance differential switched-current memory cell is used as a basic building block. To reduce the chip area and maintain the required accuracy of the coefficients, an array consisting of three different sizes of transistors is designed instead of using a unit transistor array as coefficient transistors. A prototype second-order switched-current IIR filter array which consists of six second-order switched-current IIR filters has been fabricated with the standard 1.2 /spl mu/m CMOS process technology. Hard wiring technique is used for programming the filters. The test results show that the characteristics of the filters satisfy the design requirements.

This paper describes a simulator for the Shiva multiprocessor system and the simulator construction methodology (SCM) used in its creation. The SCM, based on the active functional unit (AFU) construct, is a modern SCM which is flexible, accurate, fast, easy to use, capable of dynamic reconfigurability at run-time, and most of all simple and capable of quick simulator construction. The AFU SCM is capable of all these things through the use of object-oriented software techniques. The Shiva simulator constructed using the AFU SCM is program-driven and capable of micro and macro architectural simulation.

Recently, a new class of adaptive filters called generalized adaptive neural filters (GANF's) emerged. They share many things in common with stack filters and include ail stack filters as a subset. The GANF's allow a very efficient hardware implementation once they are trained, However, the training process can be slow. This paper discusses structural modifications to allow for faster training. In addition, these modifications can lead to an increase in the filter's robustness, given a limited amount of training data. This paper does not attempt to justify use of a GANF;it only presents an alternative implementation of the filter.

The performance of nonhierachical circuit switched networks at moderate load conditions is improved when alternate routes are made available, Alternate routes, however, introduce instability under heavy and overloaded conditions, and under these load conditions network performance is found to deteriorate, To alleviate this problem, a control mechanism is used where, a fraction of the capacity of each link is reserved for direct routed calls, In this work, a traffic management scheme is developed to enhance the performance of a mesh-connected, circuit-switched satellite communication network, The network load is measured and the network is continually adapted by reconfiguring the map to suit the current traffic conditions, The routing is performed dynamically. The reconfiguration of the network is done by properly allocating the capacity of each link and placing an optimal reservation on each link, The optimization is done by using two neural network-based optimization techniques: simulated annealing and mean field annealing. A comparative study is done between these two techniques, The results from the simulation study show that this method of traffic management performs better than the pure dynamic routing with a fixed configuration.

The authors introduce a new bit-serial algorithm for stack filtering, designated as the bit-serial window partitioning algorithm. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can achieve very important savings over the conventional bit-serial binary-tree search algorithm, in terms of the computational speed. This improved efficiency is obtained by evaluating the Boolean function at thresholds corresponding to the sample values within the filter window, and by taking advantage of the ordering information associated with the threshold sequences.

Chair and Varshney have derived an optimal rule for fusing decisions based on the Bayesian criterion. To implement the rule, the probability of detection P-D and the probability of false alarm P-F for each detector must be known, but this information is not always available in practice. An adaptive fusion model which estimates the P-D and P-F adaptively by a simple counting process is presented, Since reference signals are not given, the decision of a local detector is arbitrated by the fused decision of all the other local detectors, Furthermore, the fused results of the other local decisions are classified as ''reliable'' and ''unreliable.'' Only reliable decisions are used to develop the rule, Analysis on classifying the fused decisions in term of reducing the estimation error is given and simulation results which conform to our analysis are presented.
