Matched-field processing (MFP) has been an active area of research in the last decade for estimating the location of a sound source and parameters related to the ocean channel. MFP yields estimates of the unknown parameters by matching the true received acoustic field to the theoretically predicted field calculated for sets of likely values for the unknown parameters. Successful demonstrations of the application of MFP to real data have been limited. Here, MFP is shown to provide both successful localization and focusing of the environment ('focalization') with real data collected in the Gulf of Mexico. The estimation is done by maximizing the correlation between the received and expected signals using simulated annealing.

In matched-field processing, sophisticated models of the ocean channel are used to provide accurate steering vectors. These steering vectors are then used with standard beamformers (conventional, MVDR, etc.). The Hudson Canyon data set is one of a few publicly available data sets in a form directly suitable for matched-field processing. Using these data we show successful tracking out to a range of 5 km. Exploitation of broadband information is critical for that processing. However, we show that the MVDR processor is only successful when the broadband information is exploited coherently.

This paper presents a new multiple-exchange ascent algorithm for designing optimal Chebyshev digital FIR filters with arbitrary magnitude and phase specifications. Compared to existing Chebyshev design techniques, the new design algorithm exhibits faster convergence while maintaining high accuracy, and is guaranteed to converge to the optimal solution. In addition, the proposed algorithm reduces to the classic second Remez (Parks-McClellan) algorithm when real-only or imaginary-only filters are designed and is, therefore, a true generalization of the classic Remez algorithm to the complex case.

This paper presents the generalised maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MSINR) array processor, which is the extension of MSINR from the single to the multiple desired-signal case. The problem of optimal multiple desired signal processing is of particular importance in a multipath fading environment. Therefore, the performance of the MSINR processor is evaluated for personal communication systems (PCS) in a Rayleigh fading channel with interference. Strong interference is expected in the PCS channel, due to the overlay in the spectrum allocated to PCS. It is shown that the generalised MSINR processor outperforms other methods the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) interference cancellers, yielding the best bit error rate (BER).

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation scheme purported to be insensitive to the multipath effects of a mobile communication channel as well as exhibiting immunity to narrow-band interference via hole punching in the OFDM spectrum. We examine and verify the OFDM bit error rate sensitivity to low level interference and introduce and demonstrate a spectrum spreading technique to reduce the effect of the narrow-band interferer.

The adaptive bootstrap separator has been shown to perform better than the conventional decorrelation detector when used for synchronous code division multiple access (CDMA) channels, or with a one-shot matched filter bank for asynchronous channels when the cross-correlation of the partial sequences is nonsingular. In the later case, however, when the "partial cross-correlation" is singular, the separator weights fail to converge. We propose the use of a soft-limiting decision instead of a hard limiter for controlling the adaptive weights of the separator. We show that the algorithm weights converge, provided that the limiting threshold is not zero or not very large. Due to analytical difficulties, the actual steady state weights are not found, but are shown to exist. Simulation results support these claims. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the adaptive soft limiter bootstrap separator are also found by simulation and compared to the performance of the conventional decorrelator that uses the pseudoinverse of the cross-correlation matrix.

A smart time-frequency exciser for DSSS communications is proposed in this correspondence. This technique utilizes the concept of uncertainty in time-frequency analysis of signals. It brings the novel concept of domain switchable signal processing. Hence, the adaptive time-frequency (ATF) exciser has the capability of deciding the domain of. the interference cancellation. Additionally, adaptive subband transforms are utilized for frequency domain excision. For time-domain excision, the ATF excision algorithm utilizes a sliding time window to reject the nonstationary, pulsed (time-localized) interference. It is shown that the proposed adaptive time-frequency exciser-based DSSS communications receiver drastically outperforms the existing systems. Its performance is nearly optimal and very robust to the inter and intradomain variations of the undesired signal.

THE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A NEW NEURAL-NETWORK-BASED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SCHEME FOR A SATELLITE COMMUNICATION-NETWORK

This paper presents the first attempt to incorporate the map configuration task with the routing task in the traffic management scheme of a satellite communication network. The map configuration task, which is automated by a self-organization scheme modified from Kohonen's model, consists of three stages. The first stage is the pattern recognition task, which selects an exemplar map that best meets the current network requirement. The second stage consists of analyzing the discrepancy between the chosen exemplar map and the state of the network, and adaptively modifying the chosen exemplar map to conform closely to the network requirement (input data pattern) by self-organization. Based on certain performance criteria, whether a new map is generated to replace the original chosen map is decided in the third stage. The routing task is implemented by a state-dependent routing algorithm which arranges the incoming call to some proper path to make the network more efficient, and lowers the call block rate. The new scheme inheriting merits of both the map configuration and routing tasks provides the best compromised performance in terms of block rates at various load conditions as compared to status quo approaches schemes with either only the map configuration task or only the routing task.

Subspectral modeling in filter banks

This correspondence deal with spectral modeling in filter banks. It is shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that subspectral modeling is superior to full spectrum modeling if performed before the rate change. The price paid for this performance improvement is an increase of computations. A few different signal sources were considered in this study. It is shown that the performance of AR and ARMA techniques are comparable in subspectral modeling. The first is desired because of its simplicity. As an application of this study, we implemented a CELP based speech codec embedded in a filter bank structure. We found that there were no performance improvements of subband CELP technique over the fullband case. The theoretical reasonings of the experimental results are also given in this correspondence.

Using, respectively, the theory of resultants/subresultants (inner determinants) and the one-to-one correspondence between reactance functions and Hurwitz polynomials, a set of necessary conditions and also another set of necessary and sufficient conditions, which involve nonlinear constraints on the polynomial coefficients, are obtained for all the roots of the polynomial to lie on the unit circle and be distinct from each other. The results have potentials for leading to improvements over previous methods for estimating parameters of sinusoids in noise where the constraints imposed provided only necessary conditions which were linear in the polynomial coefficients.
