Conservation laws to investigate the achievability of performance objectives in broadband networks are developed. Conservation laws for delay presented so far assumed infinite buffer size. No conservation laws for delay with finite buffer were established. In the present work, it is shown that the conservation law for combining scheduling and pushout mechanisms is represented as a two-dimensional region, rather than as a line, in the two-dimensional plane. In this case, the classical mixing strategies of E. Gelenbe and I. Mitrani (1980) may not be used to achieve the performance objectives. Therefore, there is a need for some other control strategies in order to satisfy both delay and loss performance objectives. On the basis of these conservation laws, the authors provide a dynamic queueing discipline that achieves the specified objectives, if the objectives can be satisfied, and treats the various workload classes fairly, if they cannot.< >

Two mechanisms for shaping private network traffic in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) are proposed and analyzed. The shapers utilize the information about the network policer and implement a form of priority service to assure satisfactory levels of cell loss and delay for traffic streams with differing service requirements multiplexed into a policed ATM virtual path. The performance of the shapers is analyzed using stochastic-fluid methods and Markov-modulated models of bursty traffic sources. The numerical results illustrate the performance benefits and flexibility obtainable through the use of the proposed shapers in comparison to a simple policed path without traffic shaping.< >

Investigates the application of 2D IIR digital filters for deinterlacing of video signals. A special class of diamond filters is presented, which employs only two coefficients and has approximately zero-phase response. The implementation of this filter is very efficient and the stability is guaranteed even under finite arithmetic conditions. This filter is tested with a group of sequences. The authors develop an analytical technique for the design of centrosymmetric two-dimensional FIR (finite impulse response) filters by formulating a frequency-domain least-square approximation problem. A study of some of the properties of the matrices involved in this design problem leads to an optimal analytical solution for the filter co-efficients. This solution permits fast calculation of the coefficients directly from the given frequency-response specifications without requiring either optimization procedures or matrix inversion operations. It is shown through design examples that the design time and computational complexity using the proposed technique are significantly lower than those for the usual optimization techniques.< >

A DS/CDMA (direct-sequence code division multiple access) system using BPSK (binary phase shift keying) modulation is simulated to determine the bit error probabilities for various numbers of users with a processing gain close to that of a cellular network. The results are compared to results obtained using the Gaussian approximation equations. The results obtained are to the feasibility of a DS/CDMA cellular network. It is concluded that DS/CDMA cellular networks appear to offer higher subscriber capacities than existing analog or TDMA (time division multiple access) formats. In addition, DS/CDMA offers additional advantages such as inherent privacy through the use of spreading codes and the ability to combat problems such as multipath fading and narrowband noise.< >

The authors consider the mean delay and the cell loss probability that bursty and correlated arrivals incur in an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switching module which can be modeled as a finite-capacity polling system with nonexhaustive cyclic service. The arrival process to each input port of the system is modeled by a Markov modulated Bernoulli process (MMBP) which is able to describe the bursty and correlated nature of the ATM traffic. A practical polling system with finite capacity does not lend itself to an exact solution. The authors introduce a tractable approach to providing an analytical approximation. It is shown that both the mean delays and the cell loss probabilities obtained from this analysis provide accurate estimates.< >

This report presents a simple and direct method of solving the registration problem associated with multiple radar tracking. The registration proceedure is split into two distinct parts that are independent from one another. The first part is a deterministic tranformation from the measurement domain to the measurement error or bias variable domain, and the second part is a filtering to track the actual value of the bias variables. Only the transformation part will be covered.

Research to develop multichannel spectral analysis methods, including classical and parametric techniques, for tube leak detection in fossil-fueled power plant boilers is described. Acoustic analysis is employed to detect leaks. The main idea is to monitor the continuous noise environment of the furnace and to look for specific acoustic signatures produced by leaks. A signal spectrum is estimated using the LabVIEW software package. The coherence spectrum of 2-channel signals estimated by the autoregressive technique is shown.< >
