An approach for rejecting broadband interference from an unknown direction when received by an array of two sensors is presented. Two configurations of such an approach, termed bootstrapped-based algorithms, are presented. Both configurations perform perfect interference cancellation when the input signal-to-noise ratio is large enough, and do it much faster than the common LMS (least mean square) interference canceler. However, additive noise causes performance degradation to both. It is shown that no general claim can be made about the superiority of one of the configurations with respect to the other. The output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio depends on the spatial separation between the interference and the desired signal, as well as on the interference-to-noise ratio, in a different manner for both configurations. The authors provide guidelines for the choice of one or the other configuration in different scenarios.< >

Studies, via simulation, the performance of different bus allocation policies for a generic shared-medium ATM switch with input and output queueing. The policies differ in the amount of information used by the bus arbitrator to decide which input queue to serve next. Classical polling systems (e.g. Round-Robin) consider only the state of the input queues. This may waste bus bandwidth on cells that are destined to output queues which are full. The present authors consider a range of bus service policies that are based on the state of the input queues, or the state of both the input and the output queues. The performance of the switch is analyzed under realistic system characteristics such as bursty traffic, limited buffer size, asymmetric load conditions, and nonuniform destinations. Input traffic is modelled by an interrupted Bernoulli process (IBP). Furthermore, it is assumed that the destinations of the arriving cells within the same burst are correlated. Two types of destination correlations are introduced and their effect on the performance of the switch is analyzed. The performance measures considered are: cell loss probability, and mean cell delay.< >

To achieve real-time performance in estimating the higher order statistics directly from the incoming time-series data, it is necessary to (a) design faster algorithms by reducing any inherent computational redundancy, and (b) apply parallel processing and pipelining. The authors present a VLSI implementable parallel architecture that computes in order recursive fashion estimates of all the higher order moments and cumulants up to the fourth order, at one of their non-redundant domains of support. The system consists of a tri-array and a farm of processors producing the moment terms and fourth order cumulants respectively. They have applied a systematic array synthesis methodology that guarantees the optimality of both arrays, as well as the appropriate interface between them, so that intermediate data movement and delays are minimized while achieving maximum output throughput.< >

The finite word-length effects of the class of order-recursive least-squares algorithms are studied. The order-recursive algorithms can be modeled as arrays of interconnected cells or building blocks, which makes it possible to evaluate their numerical accuracy by studying the cell and then the combined roundoff noise effects in the array. The roundoff error of the local variable in each cell is given by a state-space model. The states of this error model are decoupled from each other: the roundoff error of a lower order residual (input) does not contribute significantly to the local state error, but only propagates through each building block to the higher order residual (output). This analysis is confirmed by numerical simulation.< >

It is shown how the total least squares recursive algorithm for the real data FIR (finite impulse response) adaptive filtering problem can be applied to reconstruct a high-resolution filtered image from undersampled, noisy multiframes, when the interframe displacements are not accurately known. This is done in the wavenumber domain after transforming the complex data problem to an equivalent real data problem, to which the algorithm developed by C.E. Davila (Proc. ICASSP 1991 p.1853-6 of 1991) applies. The procedure developed also applies when the multiframes are degraded by linear shift-invariant blurs. All the advantages of implementation via massively parallel computational architecture apply. The performance of the algorithm is verified by computer simulations.< >

Using the theory of resultants/subresultants (inner determinants), a set of necessary conditions as well as another set of necessary conditions as well as another set of necessary and sufficient conditions, which are nonlinear functions of the polynomial coefficients, are obtained for all its roots to lie on the unit circle and be distinct from each other. The results have potential for improvement over previous methods for estimating parameters of sinusoids in noise where the constraints imposed provide only necessary conditions and are linearly related to the polynomial coefficients.< >

This paper summarizes the results of two neural hardware implementations of a helicopter gearbox health monitoring system (HMS). Our first hybrid approach and implementation to fault diagnosis is outlined, and our results are summarized using three levels of fault characterization: fault detection (fault or no fault), classification (gear or bearing fault), and identification (fault sub-classes). Our second all-analog implementation exploits the ability, of analog neural hardware to compute the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) as a pre-processor to a neural classifier. Our hardware results compare well with previously published software simulations.< >

The authors consider the problem of CFAR (constant false-alarm rate) detection in nonhomogeneous clutter and in multiple target situations. The data discriminator (DD) CFAR detector which performs two passes over the data, is proposed and analyzed. In the first pass, the algorithm senses possible interfering targets, and in the second pass the algorithm selects those samples which are identically distributed with the noise in the test cell to form the detection threshold. The false alarm control and the detection performance of the DD-CFAR processor are evaluated and compared to those of the ACGO and TM-CFAR detectors for nonhomogeneous background environments. In addition, the required processing time of the proposed detector is shown to be less than the required processing time of both the ACGO and TM-CFAR detectors.< >

There exist some situations in signal processing where it is necessary to compute in real time, the transform coefficients of a set of N time domain samples in a block that gets updated continuously with the arrival of a new sample. A familiar example is the frequency domain implementation of a tapped delay line (TDL) adaptive filter. One method of computing the updated (running or instantaneous) transform coefficients without resorting to the computation of N point transform each time the block gets updated, is to use the shift property of the transform. For the computation of the updated discrete cosine transform-II (DCT-II), discrete sine transform-II (DST-II), discrete cosine transform-IV (DCT-IV), and discrete sine transform-IV (DST-IV) as defined in [5], usage of the shift property requires simultaneous computation (if not available as a by-product of the desired transform computation process) and updating of corresponding DST-II, DCT-II, DST-IV, and DCT-IV, respectively. This requirement of an additional transform computation and (or) updating, results in an increased computational burden. In this paper, we give an alternate algorithm for computing updated transform coefficients for DCT-II, DST-II, DCT-IV, and DST-IV that is computationally attractive for real-time implementation. An architecture for the VLSI implementation of the proposed algorithms is also given.
