Phase coding and linear frequency modulation in analog or discrete form are widely used in power-limited radar systems for pulse compression to achieve high range resolution. Such coded waveforms are detected by appropriately matched filtering of the in-phase and the quadrature samples derived from the received signal. Complementary codes have generated such interest in the area of high-resolution radar signal design. There are, however, no published results to judge the robustness of this coding scheme in the presence of quadrature channel imbalance. Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to fill this gap. It is concluded from the results that although the degradation in the case of complementary codes increases more rapidly than for Frank codes, complementary-coded waveforms have better overall performance than Frank-coded waveforms in the presence of sampling errors.< >

The authors evaluate the impact of Swerling I and Swerling II target scintillation models in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise on the resolution properties of pseudonoise (PN) sequence coded waveforms. There are two major factors which significantly affect the performance of radar systems. The first well-known factor is noise, ambient or intentional. The second factor is due to the variation in the echo signal with time: this is also called target fluctuation or scintillation. The effect due to each of these factors has been incorporated into the performance evaluation procedure by applying appropriate statistical models to the problem. The results presented bear out the fact that the use of an appropriate model is highly desirable to avoid misleading results.< >

In this paper, a technique for modeling and adaptive filtering of systems with hysteresis nordinearities has been developed. Unlike other methods which are only applicable to describing and studying systems with hysteresis nonlinearities, our technique introduces an actual model which can be used more effectively for systems identification and modeling. It is shown that in applications the modeling of hysteresis effects can be done effectively by representing the model as a nonlinearity with memory. In this technique the nonlinear channel is divided into a memory nonlinearity followed by a dispersive linear system. Assuming that the dispersive linear system is stationary during initialization, and the nonlinearity does not change while the dispersive linear system varies with time, the Quantized Mean Field Annealing (QMFA) Algorithm is applied to obtain the coefficients and the order of the memory of the nonlinearity and conventional RLS/FTF is applied to determine the weights of the dispersive linear system. Application of this method to a full duplex digital subscriber loop is made, where significant performance improvements are achieved as the result. © 1992 IEEE.

This paper focuses on the upper bounds for both the mean delay and the probability of cell loss that bursty arrivals incur in a finite capacity multiqueue system with nonexhaustive cyclic service. We compute the upper bounds for this system by considering a cell multiplexer with the same arrival processes and equal queue capacity. Under the ATM environment, the mean delay obtained from this multiplexer cannot only serve as an upper bound but also render a fairly accurate estimation for the mean delay of the polling system. For the cell loss probability, we consider a multiple urn model with uniform occupancy distribution which will guarantee the upper bound. A heuristic method is proposed to give better estimates for cases which have medium to high cell loss rate. © 1992 IEEE.

The problem of modeling 2-D system transfer functions given only bispectrum samples of the noisy output is considered. This identification procedure is a three-step process. First, the output bispectrum samples are calculated along a 2-D slice in the 4-D bispectrum frequency region. Next, these samples are used to obtain a rational model of the bispectrum slice via a 2-D divided difference approach. Finally, two methods for finding the underlying system transfer function parameters from this rational model are developed. This system identification procedure is general in that it does not impose causality, recursibility, or minimum phase restrictions on the system to be identified.< >

The effect of a bandpass limiter in code-division multiple-access (CDMA) quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) satellite spread-spectrum communication systems is investigated. The case of a cochannel interferer on the uplink and downlink is analyzed in detail. The nonlinear characteristics of the bandpass limited result in the generation of intermodulation products which become narrowband signals after the despreading process in the receiver. These intermodulation products and the cochannel interference affect system performance. The symbol error rate of the system is calculated as a function of the signal-to-noise and signal-to-interference ratios. The assumptions made in deriving the theoretical performance of the system have been checked by simulating the entire system using the block oriented systems simulator (BOSS) software package. The results of the simulation show good agreement with the theoretical calculations within 1 to 2 dB in SNR.< >

General order-recursive least-squares estimation employing a sliding window is described. It is shown that time and order updates of any order-recursive sliding window least-squares algorithm can be obtained solely by 3*3 hyperbolic Householder transformations. Applying this general observation to the sliding window least-squares estimation of time-series signals results in a new algorithm: the hyperbolic Householder lattice (HHL) algorithm. This work broadens the range of applications of QR-decomposition (QRD)-based adaptive least-squares algorithms by allowing a sliding window formulation in addition to the known exponentially windowed form.< >

The authors develop an optimization scheme based on mean field theory (MFT) to solve the task scheduling problem. The algorithm combines characteristics of the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm and the Hopfield neural network. The temperature behavior of MFT for the task scheduling problem is shown to possess a critical temperature below which an optimal solution may be achieved. The algorithm has been applied to various task graphs, and promising results have been obtained.< >

The authors extend the previously reported three structures of bootstrap blind adaptive separators to the multisignal channel case. They suggest a recursive weight updating algorithm for the three structures: power-power, correlator-correlator, and power-correlator. The optimum weights for these separators were found analytically in the absence of noise. The signal separation process was shown via simulation by the output learning curve. It was shown that the different bootstrap separators converge to their steady states almost with the same speed for a two or three signal channel. The steady-state interference residues of the three separators are different, lowest for power-power and highest for correlator-correlator. The use of equalization (automatic gain control) at the output of these structures improves the depth of interference cancellation dramatically.< >
