In this paper we investigate the local probability density function (pdf) of natural signals in sparse domains. The statistical properties of natural signals are characterized more accurately in the sparse domains because the sparse domain coefficients (SDCs) have heavy-tailed distribution and have reduced correlation with adjacent coefficients. Our experiments show that a conditionally (given locally estimated variance and shape) independent Bessel K-form (BKF) pdf locally fits the sparse domain's coefficients of natural signals, accurately. To justify this observation, we also investigate the pdf of the locally estimated variance and suggest a Gamma pdf for the locally estimated variance. Since commonly used sparse transformations are orthonormal, the pdf of the sparse domain coefficients must converge to Gaussian distribution by virtue of central limit theorem assuming that natural signals are locally wide sense stationary for small window sizes. Interestingly, we observe that the pdf of the normalized data (on the locally estimated variance) exhibit a Gaussian pdf, which justifies why the BKF pdf is an appropriate fit.

We present developments in the search for engineered radio emissions from advanced extraterrestrial life. Our group is currently engaging in both targeted and sky survey searches for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), covering a wide variety of narrow-band and pulsed signal types. We are also developing new SETI instrumentation, designed to be flexible, modular and to employ commodity components that lower cost and enhance upgradability. Here we will discuss the status of these observational and engineering projects, as well as prospects for future radio SETI endeavors.

The regulation of gene expression is a dynamic process, hence it is of vital interest to identify and characterize these dynamic processes. Since genes work in a cascade of networks, gene regulatory network (GRN) reconstruction is a crucial process for thorough understanding of the underlying biological interactions. We present here a technique based on partial correlations to infer the GRN. Our proposed technique takes into account the possible and variable time delays between various genes. The results have shown that our proposed algorithm has results consistent with the existing biological knowledge. Our algorithm is implemented in R.

Most of the automatic seizure detection schemes reported in the literature are complex for detecting seizures that are of (a) short duration, (b) minimal amplitude evolution, or (c) non-rhythmic mixed frequency epileptic activity. We present a novel morphology-based classifier to detect epileptic seizures for intracranial EEG recording. The method characterizes epileptic seizure by detecting continual presence of sharp half-waves in the EEG. Performance is evaluated on single channel intracranial EEG of seven patients, and compared to two previously developed methods for intracranial EEG recordings by our research group. The method detects seizure of varying types (rhythmic, non-rhythmic, short- and long- seizures) with a sensitivity of 100%, a false detection rate of 0.1/h and an average onset delay of 9.1 s. The method outperforms the two previously developed methods and is computationally simple for real-time application. Preliminary results on seven patients data are very promising.

In this paper, an efficient signal-perturbation-free semi-blind approach is proposed for flat-fading channel estimation of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with maximum ratio transmission (MRT). A novel transmit scheme is developed based on the eigenvalue decomposition of the correlation matrix of the transmitted signal. The new scheme is to send a small volume of data bearing the information of the correlation matrix to the receiver for the cancellation of the signal perturbation error. computer simulations show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the closed-form semiblind estimation method (CFSB) in terms of the MSE of the beamforming vector estimate.

This study aims to develop a fully-automated algorithm utilizing image processing methods to segment capillaries in microcirculatory video recordings and to quantitatively analyze the changes occur in microcirculation. The video recordings are captured from lingual surfaces of animal subjects at healthy condition to create a baseline and during hemorrhagic shock. The percentage of active blood vessels in the frames will lead to the measurement of microcirculation. Video stabilization, pre-processing, vessel segmentation, identification of active blood vessels and calculating the Functional Capillary Density of the video recordings are the five main steps of the algorithm. Five sub-regions for each video recording are selected to stabilize the frames through maximizing cross-correlation. Adaptive histogram equalization and median filtering are main steps of pre-processing to enhance the contrast. Multiple level thresholding is applied to pre-processed images and each pixel is verified based on geometric and contrast parameters at each threshold level. The difference of segmented consecutive frames is calculated to detect active capillaries. The algorithm is tested on publicly available retinal image database ( DRIVE) and the vessel segmentation results show 93% accuracy when it is compared to manual segmentation results. The Functional Capillary Density calculated for microcirculation video recordings is used to identify healthy and hemorrhagic subjects successfully.

This paper proposes an efficient direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm for wideband signals from data collected using two sensors. Like the traditional wideband methods, this algorithm first decomposes wideband sources into narrowband bins. At each frequency bin, the cross-correlation between sensors is estimated to construct a Toeplitz matrix, which contains all angle information. Thus the physical size between two sensors is independent of the frequency bins and relies more on the inter-frequency bin difference. The proposed method is flexible in the design of the sensor array without inducing ambiguities. Simulation results confirm the ability of the proposed method that provides reliable estimates in multiple wideband signal environments. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate a joint scheduling and transmitting scheme in cognitive radio networks. Three phases are considered in the proposed scheme(named scheme 1): l)in the first phase, JVt primary users(PUs) in the high-rate region are chosen to implement communication with primary base station (PBS); 2)in the second phase, PBS will support simultaneously the fixed relay station(RS) and the selected PUs in the high-rate region based on certain beamforming(BF); 3)in the third phase, selected PUs in the low-rate region and selected cognitive users(CUs) in the cognitive region are supported by RS. In particular, during the phases above, all selected users send back their channel covariance matrices to PBS or RS on the purpose of lowering the feedback and implementing certain BE Furthermore, a frame structure used for the joint scheduling and transmitting scheme is presented and the performance of scheme 1 with imperfect channel covariance matrix feedback is evaluated to compare with that of scheme 1 with perfect feedback. From the simulation results, the proposed scheme(scheme 1) can significantly improve the throughput of the network over the basic system(named scheme 2) without spectral sharing.

The aim of this study is to assess the functional connectivity from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Spectral clustering algorithm was applied to the realistic and real fMRI data acquired from a resting healthy subject to find functionally connected brain regions. In order to make computation of the spectral decompositions of the entire brain volume feasible, the similarity matrix has been sparsified with the t-nearestneighbor approach. Realistic data were created to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm and comparing it to the recently proposed spectral clustering algorithm with the Nystrom approximation and also with some well-known algorithms such as the Cross Correlation Analysis (CCA) and the spatial Independent Component Analysis (sICA). To enhance the performance of the methods, a variety of data pre and post processing steps, including data normalization, outlier removal, dimensionality reduction by using wavelet coefficients, estimation of number of clusters and optimal number of independent components (ICs). Results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm for functional connectivity analysis.

Segmentation of microcirculation is a major step in analyzing blood circulatory system. In this study, a method for segmentation of capillaries and small blood vessels in video recordings captured from lingual surface is presented. The main objective is to monitor and quantitatively assess the variations that occur in microcirculation over a period of treatment for diseases or during a resuscitation process. The resulting system will assist physicians and researchers to make diagnostically and therapeutically important decisions such as determination of effectiveness of drug usage and resuscitation process. The algorithm is based on advanced digital image processing methods to detect capillaries and to determine the Functional Capillary Density (FCD) in order to identify the distribution of blood flow for a variety of normal and abnormal cases. The technique consists of four main steps;preprocessing, video stabilization, segmentation and post-processing. This study specifically focuses on minimizing user interaction and improving the accuracy of results. Visual inspection of the results by medical experts indicates that the technique can identify 95% of active capillaries and small blood vessels.
