Iterative Gaussian-Laplacian Pyramid Network for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Gaussian pyramid (GP) is a commonly used image coding technique that encodes an image as a pyramid that is stacked by a set of images with Gaussian window-reduced sizes and multiple spatial resolutions. Associated with GP, a Laplacian pyramid (LP) can be also constructed to represent differential images between images in two consecutive layers of GP. Such resulting Gaussian-Laplacian pyramid (GLP) performs data compression in a lossless and lossy manner. A convolutional neural network (CNN) consists of a series of layers concatenated in a feedforward manner where each layer has a convolutional sublayer (CL) and a pooling sublayer (PL). Interestingly, each layer implemented by CL and PL in a CNN can be realized by a single layer in GP in the sense that CL and PL can be carried out by a low-pass Gaussian filter operated as a Gaussian kernel in a single layer of GP. This article develops a new approach to hyperspectral image classification (HSIC), called the GLP network (GLPN), which uses not only GP to realize CNN but also LP to capture differential information between two consecutive layers that CNN cannot. Furthermore, by incorporating an iterative process into GLPN, we can derive an iterative GLPN (IGLPN) that can be considered a companion of a recently developed iterative random training sampling CNN (IRTS-CNN) by replacing CNN with GLPN. Since GLPN can realize CNN in a better way, it is expected that IGLPN will perform better than IRTS-CNN and also significantly reduce computational efficiency compared to IRTS-CNN. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted semi-grant-free (SGF) transmission, which enables grant-based users to share their spectrum with grant-free (GF) users, becomes an effective solution to the challenge of massive connections. However, this improvement is limited as most of the existing schemes can only admit one GF user. In this paper, we propose a novel NOMA-assisted SGF transmission scheme to support the access of multiple GF users in unmanned aerial vehicle networks. Moreover, in order to further enhance the advantages of the multi-user SGF scheme, two SGF schemes with power matching are devised to further improve the performance by employing the benefits of distributed contention. For ease of performance evaluation, the theoretical expressions of achievable sum rate and average age of information of the three SGF schemes are derived by applying order statistics. We also investigate the high signal-to- noise approximation expressions of sum rate for these schemes to give more insight. Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance improvement of three proposed SGF schemes and validate the correctness of the theoretical analysis expressions. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Berman Codes: A Generalization of Reed-Muller Codes that Achieve BEC Capacity

We identify a family of binary codes whose structure is similar to Reed-Muller (RM) codes and which include RM codes as a strict subclass. The codes in this family are denoted as Cn(r, m), and their duals are denoted as Bn(r, m). The length of these codes is nm, where n ≥ 2, and r is their ‘order’. When n = 2, Cn(r, m) is the RM code of order r and length 2m. The special case of these codes corresponding to n being an odd prime was studied by Berman (1967) and Blackmore and Norton (2001). Following the terminology introduced by Blackmore and Norton, we refer to Bn(r, m) as the Berman code and Cn(r, m) as the dual Berman code. We identify these codes using a recursive Plotkin-like construction, and we show that these codes have a rich automorphism group, they are generated by the minimum weight codewords, and that they can be decoded up to half the minimum distance efficiently. Using a result of Kumar et al. (2016), we show that these codes achieve the capacity of the binary erasure channel (BEC) under bit-MAP decoding. Furthermore, except double transitivity, they satisfy all the code properties used by Reeves and Pfister to show that RM codes achieve the capacity of binary-input memoryless symmetric channels. Finally, when n is odd, we identify a large class of abelian codes that includes Bn(r, m) and Cn(r, m) and which achieves BEC capacity. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This work presents the design of a passive reflectarray-based Intelligent Reflective Surface (IRS) to improve the coverage in a 5G scenario at 28 GHz. The IRS generates a wide beam in azimuth with a narrow beam in elevation, using a Phase-Only Synthesis with the Intersection Approach to design it. The resulting phase-shift distribution radiates a field pattern that covers an angular range of 12.75° and 2° in azimuth and elevation. Due to the IRS is placed on a building face, the surrender wall effect is analyzed. Different building materials are electromagnetically characterized in the Ka-band. Then, the effect of the wall is included in the radiated field. The results clearly demonstrate that the wall produces a strong reflection on the specular direction, deeply affecting the coverage. These preliminary results show the importance of including the wall in the design process.

The terahertz (THz) band radio access with larger available bandwidth is anticipated to provide higher capacities for next-generation wireless communication systems. However, higher path loss at THz frequencies significantly limits the wireless communication range. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is an attractive technology to increase the Rayleigh distance by generating higher gain beams using low wavelength and highly directive antenna array aperture. In addition, both far-field and near-field components of the antenna system should be considered for modeling THz electromagnetic propagation, where the channel estimation for this environment becomes a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel channel estimation method using a real image denoising network (RIDNet) and orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) for hybrid-field THz mMIMO channels, including far-field and near-field constituents. The simulation experiments are performed using the ray-tracing tool. The results demonstrate that the proposed RIDNet-based method consistently provides lower channel estimation errors than the conventional OMP algorithm for all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. The performance gap becomes higher at low SNR regimes. Furthermore, the results imply that the same error performance of the OMP can be achieved by the RIDNet-based method using a lower number of RF chains and pilot symbols.

The estimation of millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels becomes compelling when one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are utilized. Furthermore, as the number of antenna increases, pilot overhead scales up to provide consistent channel estimation, eventually degrading spectral efficiency. This study presents a channel estimation approach that combines a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) with a novel blind denoising network with a sparse feature attention mechanism. Performance analysis and simulations show that using a cGAN fused with a feature attention-based denoising neural network significantly enhances the channel estimation performance while requiring less pilot transmission.

Nowadays, multimedia data are often produced by various sources, e.g., Internet of Things (IoT), social media, customer databases, etc. As tremendous multimedia data are produced every day, users or E-commerce customers cannot infer information from such data by themselves and therefore recommender systems have been developed to help users to select the products or services which better fit users' preferences or requirements. Nonetheless, there exists few works on the incorporation of side information or multiple attributes about items into the design of a more robust recommender system. In this work, we propose a novel approach based on the third-order tensor singular-value-decomposition (T3-SVD) to design new personalized multimedia recommender systems (PMRSs) for internet users. A PMRS can dynamically adjust its recommendation strategy subject to a particular user's on-line transaction behavior. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed PMRS based on T3-SVD, we compare the performances of our proposed new PMRS and two other existing tensor-based recommendation systems over realworld data in terms of normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). As a result, our proposed new PMRS greatly outperforms the other two existing systems. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, a reflective metasurface is designed to generate a dual-circularly-polarized uniform plane wave at Ka-band (31 GHz). The metasurface is designed using a Phase-Only Synthesis with the generalized Intersection Approach. The design considers tight constraints in both amplitude and phase of the radiated near field. The synthesized phase-shift distribution is also used to convert the dual-linearly polarized incident field into a dual-circularly polarized reflected field. The unit-cell of the metasurface is based on two stacked layers of three parallel dipoles, adjusted cell by cell to provide the synthesized phase distributions with less than ±1º of phase error. Preliminary results show the generation of a uniform plane wave in an area equivalent to 82.8% of the metasurface aperture size, revealing the possibility of generating dual-circularly-polarized uniform plane waves using metasurfaces with a simple design process.

Numerical association rule mining offers a very efficient way of mining association rules, where algorithms can operate directly with categorical and numerical attributes. These methods are suitable for mining different transaction databases, where data are entered sequentially. However, little attention has been paid to the time series numerical association rule mining, which offers a new technique for extracting association rules from time series data. This paper presents a new algorithmic method for time series numerical association rule mining and its application in smart agriculture. We offer a concept of a hardware environment for monitoring plant parameters and a novel data mining method with practical experiments. In this work a model to compute the near-field of an Intelligent Reflective Surface is presented. The proposed approach computes the near-field by means of the Huygens' Principle and the Principle of Superposition using the formulation of classical antenna apertures. The model is fully described and numerically simulated by designing a reflectarray at mmWave frequency and radiating in the Fresnel zone, similar to an IRS in an indoor scenario for 5G FR2 communications. The design is manufactured to experimentally validate the proposed model. The measurements agree with simulations for the copolar and cross-polar components of the radiated near-field. This approach presents a simply model to compute the near-field which provides a good prediction of the radiated near-field.
