We have established a medical network in Asia-Pacific area with high-quality moving image on a super broad-banded internet line since February 2003. Broadcasting real-time surgery and teleconference with medical-quality videos with Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) were so useful to learn surgical techniques and other medical procedures beyond borders. We have conducted 20 events in categories of teleconference (8 times), live transmission of medical procedure (6 times), and remote attendance to scientific medical meetings (6 times) until September 2004. We had teleconferences among 3 countries in APAN-Hawaii in January 2004 (Japan, Korea and USA), and in APAN-Cairns in July 2004 (Japan, Korea and Australia). There have been no serious transmission/ ethical problems sofar. With these experiences and current achievements, we hope to extend this advanced network system to whole Asia-Pacific countries to share medical skills and knowledge. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents a computer-assisted diagnostic system for mass detection and classification, which performs mass detection on regions of interest followed by the benign-malignant classification on detected masses. In order for mass detection to be effective, a sequence of preprocessing steps are designed to enhance the intensity of a region of interest, remove the noise effects and locate suspicious masses using five texture features generated from the spatial gray level difference matrix (SGLDM) and fractal dimension. Finally, a probabilistic neural network (PNN) coupled with entropic thresholding techniques is developed for mass extraction. Since the shapes of masses are crucial in classification between benignancy and malignancy, four shape features are further generated and joined with the five features previously used in mass detection to be implemented in another PNN for mass classification. To evaluate our designed system a data set collected in the Taichung Veteran General Hospital, Taiwan, R.O.C. was used for performance evaluation. The results are encouraging and have shown promise of our system.

A distributed signature sequence adaptation scheme is considered for the downlink of MC-CDMA system, wherein each mobile user selfishly adapts its signature sequences to improve its own performance using measurements at its location with no consideration to the performance of other users in the system. The convergence of such adaptation scheme is shown using game theory framework. That is, with any initial signature sequences in the system, the proposed adaptation scheme will definitely converges to a set of signature sequences at which no user can further improve its own performance with individual adaptation. © 2004 IEEE.

This paper will trace the origins of non-linear signal and image processing techniques from their separate sources based in set theory and logic to the more unified field that we see today. It will outline the technical difficulties resulting from the abandonment of well-known linear design methods and the subsequent advantages in terms of improved results. Some new design methods such as statistical estimation will be summarised. Finally, new challenges, such as the extension to multivariate data and applications in security, control and bioscience will be introduced. These will topics will be covered in more detail by subsequent speakers. © 2004 EUSIPCO.

We present a wavelet-based image watermarking algorithm that is able to embed the watermark information into objects within an image. In the proposed algorithm, the zerotrees in the wavelet coefficient domain corresponding to the selected object(s) are identified. Then the watermark is embedded into the bandpass wavelet coefficients with large amplitudes within these zerotrees by using an appropriate quantization process. The bitmap of the zerotrees corresponding to the selected objects, the wavelet used for the transform, and the parameters for the transform and quantization are chosen as the keys for the proposed algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed watermarking technique and its robustness against some commonly encountered image processing operations are demonstrated through simulation studies.

In this paper, we propose a flexible architecture that performs the computation of the discrete wavelet transform, requiring a small memory space and is capable of operating at high sampling rate. The architecture employs two filtering blocks to compute the transform and one buffer to store the intermediate results. Each filtering block has two processing units that operate independently in parallel using a two-phase scheduling. An efficient scheme for the synchronization of the data flow among the three blocks is provided in order to minimize the buffer size and increase the speed of operation. Verilog and HSPICE simulation results are presented to show that the proposed architecture is more efficient for the computation of a fully decomposed discrete wavelet transform with high-tap filters than some other existing architectures in terms of their areas and speed of operations.

We propose a new block time-reversal conjugate based quasi-orthogonal space-time block encoding and decoding (QO-STBC) scheme for a wireless system with four transmit antennas in frequency selective fading channels. The proposed scheme effectively combats channel dispersion and frequency selectivity due to multipath, yet still provides full diversity gain. We also propose a maximum likelihood (ML) solution, with a simple decoupled structure, to decode the block time-reversal conjugate QO-STBC symbols at low complexity for channels with short delay.
