The nonlinear distortion of an acoustic signal caused by the nonlinearity of a power amplifier and/or loudspeaker may give rise to a nonlinear component in acoustic echo cancellation systems. A conventional acoustic echo canceller (AEC) using linear adaptive filtering is not able to eliminate the nonlinear echo component to a satisfactory degree. In this paper, we present a nonlinear echo cancellation technique that uses a nonlinear transformation along with a regular linear adaptive filter for the compensation of the nonlinear echo component. A raised-cosine function is used to derive the nonlinear transformation and the parameters of the nonlinear compensator are updated to adapt to the nonlinearity of the unknown distorting path. The proposed method is simulated in conjunction with the conventional normalized least mean squared algorithm, showing a superior performance of the proposed acoustic echo canceller.

It is know that the adaptively regularized constrained total least squares (ARCTLS) outperforms the constrained total least squares (CTLS) or the regularized CTLS in image restoration. In this paper, a wavelet domain image restoration approach, using ARCTLS is presented. The degraded image is first decomposed into subband images by using a wavelet transform. The ARCTLS algorithm is then applied to each of the subband images. The proposed restoration method is simulated and compared with the conventional RCTLS and ARCTLS techniques. It is shown that the proposed method yields a better improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

An efficient channel estimation algorithm using a variable step-size adaptive filter is proposed for wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) communication systems. The new algorithm is able to achieve a fast convergence and a low steady state error compared with a conventional constant step-size adaptive filtering method. The proposed algorithm is analyzed and simulated for multipath Rayleigh fading channels, showing the true channel response and the estimation results. The BER performance of the system is also simulated and compared with the Bhattacharyya bound.

In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, there are two main types of radio frequency front-end imperfections, i.e., carrier frequency offset and in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, which deteriorate the demodulation performance of direct conversion receiver. In this paper, a new frequency offset estimation algorithm using preambles specified in IEEE 802.11a is proposed considering the presence of I/Q imbalance. The new algorithm enjoys a low computational complexity and is less dependent on the amplitude imbalance and the angular error of the I and Q components. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to some of the existing algorithms.

In this paper, a two-step channel estimation scheme is presented for downlink wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) communication systems. The proposed method employs the time multiplexed pilot symbols for an initial coarse estimation followed by a data-aided fine estimation in order to achieve a fast and accurate estimation of the complex channel gain. Our simulation shows that the proposed method works very well for both slow and fast fading channels. The computational complexity required by the proposed estimation is significantly reduced compared to some of the existing estimation techniques.

In this paper, the design of Mth-band FIR filters via semidefinite programming (SDP) is investigated. Some of the frequency response properties of a general nonlinear-phase Mth-band filter are first examined, yielding a few constraints for the amplitude and phase responses of the Mth-band filter. An SDP-based optimization problem is formulated for the least-square and minimax design of Mth-band filters. Although the formulation is established for a nonlinear phase filter, the design result shows that an exactly linear phase can be obtained when the desired phase/delay characteristic is properly specified.

In this paper, an efficient watermark embedding scheme is presented in the wavelet transform domain. A pseudorandom sequence is weighted using a weighting function and then embedded to the wavelet transform coefficients of a host image. The proposed new weighting function consists of a perceptual mask and a reliability mask, which take into account, respectively, the imperceptibility and the robustness of the marked image. A detection algorithm based on the correlation of the watermark and the marked image is also proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed embedding algorithm is very robust against various attacks including compression, cropping and low-pass filtering.

Many scientists and engineers have signal and image processing applications that involve large data sets and could benefit from parallel processing on readily-available clusters of workstations (COWs). Unfortunately these applications often exist as legacy code, such as Matlab functions, which are not easily parallelizable. The goal of the JavaPorts project is to provide a framework for flexible development of parallel and distributed component-based applications for heterogeneous COWs. The latest version of the package supports the integration of Java and Matlab components into the same application. The main features of the JavaPorts framework and its tools are discussed and application examples are presented which highlight its ability to support the rapid prototyping of parallel and distributed computing strategies with communicating Java and Matlab components.
