In order to increase the capacity of WCDMA systems in the uplink while avoiding complexity, we investigate a space-time configuration by employing jointly beamforming and multishot multiuser separation. Such a joint structure provides a better bit error rate performance than either techniques used separately. Specifically, we propose a less complex space-time configuration, which is robust to multiple access interference (MAI) over a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. We investigate the BER performance of the system by Monte Carlo simulations. The results obtained show that applying space-time processing using a simple beamforming and multishot separator can improve the performance of WCDMA systems considerably.

Stereo image pair coding is an important issue in stereo data compression. A wavelet based stereo image pair coding algorithm is proposed in this paper. The wavelet transform is used to decompose the image into an approximation image and three edge images. In the wavelet domain, a disparity estimation technique is developed to estimate the disparity field using both approximation image and edge images. To improve the accuracy of estimation of wavelet images produced by the disparity compensation technique, a novel wavelet based subspace projection technique (SPT) is developed. In the SPT, the block dependent subspaces are constructed using block varying basis vectors that are derived from the disparity compensated wavelet images. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient to achieve stereo image compression.

A technique for tracking the time-varying minimum of a time-dependent function is proposed. It ensures the tracking process converge exponentially. It also enables the tracking to move from the minimum at one instant of time to the minimum at the next instant of time, without any error. Examples are given to show that this technique is effective for tracking the time-varying minimum. Application of this technique to on-line continuous system identification, on-line neural network learning, etc. gives rise to improved results.

In this paper, the singular-value decomposition (SVD) technique is investigated for the realization of 2-D linear-phase FIR filters with arbitrary magnitude responses. A parallel realization structure consisting of a number of 1-D FIR filters is obtained by applying the SVD to the impulse response of a 2-D filter. By using the symmetry property of the 2-D impulse response and by developing an appropriate unitary transform, a singular-value decomposition yielding 1-D linear-phase constituent filters is obtained. It is shown that the number of parallel sections can be reduced significantly by neglecting the smaller singular values and allowing only a very small error in the magnitude response of the realized 2-D filter.

Identification of the modulation type of a received signal is a problem encountered in radio spectrum surveillance and control. It is attractive to design methods that use only one or two time-domain classification parameters, in order to minimize the computational complexity. A number of new classification parameters are proposed and studied in this paper. They are compared to an existing one-parameter method. Also, a new method of envelope extraction, which does not require Hilbert transform computation, is proposed. The proposed methods achieve better recognition rates at short data records, e.g. 89% vs. 82% at 10 dB, 1024 samples, and 95% for a combination of two parameters.

In this paper, a two-layer hierarchical video coding technique that is compatible with MPEG2 is presented. By using a simplified version of the Mallat algorithm, a video signal is decomposed as two constituent signals, the smoothed signal comprising low-frequency content and the edge part representing the high-frequency information. The smoothed signal is then encoded into an MPEG2 video stream, while the edge information is encoded by utilizing the chain code into an MPEG2 private stream. By applying this coding strategy, the artifacts such as the blocking effect that is usually present in conventional block-based coding schemes, especially at low bit rate, and the ringing effect which may occur in a wavelets-based method, are both overcome. Simulation results show that the proposed coding scheme is capable of producing high-quality reconstructed video signals.

A LMMSE multi-rate detector for synchronous CDMA frequency selective Rayleigh fading channels is proposed. A comparative study between the conventional multi-rate RAKE receiver and suboptimal multi-rate detector is presented. The conventional multi-rate RAKE receiver is severely limited by the near-far effects in the multiuser environment. Both suboptimal multi-rate receiver and LMMSE multi-rate detector have the near-far resistance while preserving the multipath diversity gain. The simulation results show that the proposed LMMSE multi-rate detector can improve the performance compared to the proposed suboptimal multirate receiver.

Multi-carrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) is a hybrid multiple access scheme combining multi-carrier modulation (MCM or OFDM) with direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS). Although a common assumption in the analysis of the performance of the various MC-CDMA detectors is that they have perfect knowledge of the fading channel, this assumption is no longer valid as the fading rate (Doppler spread) of the channel increases. We examine the performance of various forms of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector operating in a fast fading Rayleigh channel described by a Gauss-Markov state-space model. We show that, although adaptive detection based on the LMS and RLS algorithms is possible without explicit channel estimation, a low complexity detector, termed MMSE per carrier, combined with an RLS channel estimator can achieve better performance as well as increased robustness to the selection of the adaptation parameters.

The capacity of wireless CDMA systems in the forward link is limited by both intra-cell and inter-cell cochannel interferences. In particular, when the mobile station is close to a cell boundary, the desired signal is disturbed by relatively strong interference from neighboring base stations. In this paper, a receiver architecture with smart antenna followed by a RAKE demodulator is suggested at a IS-95 CDMA mobile station for interference suppression and diversity combining. Such a structure can work well only when the channel vector of desired signal is correctly estimated. We use the identifying spreading codes (as in IS-95 for example) to provide and adaptively correct a channel vector estimate, suppress cochannel interference, hence improve the system capacity.

We study error control for an MPEG2 digital video compression scheme. We propose to combine error control coding together with error concealment. Classical error detection is used to locate errors in the compressed video bitstream. This information, together with information provided by the syntax of the compressed bitstream, is used to perform the error concealment. Thus the concealment is performed in the compressed video domain. The introduction of a new concealment method which relies on the redundancies that the syntax of the compressed bitstream provides, is the main contribution of this work. Another contribution is the performance evaluation between the proposed scheme, a general error correction scheme, and a simple case, where no effort is made to correct existing errors.
