In this paper, it is shown that radix-2 discrete Fourier transform algorithms can be designed for some transform lengths that are not integral powers of two. These algorithms reduce the overhead operations significantly compared with the mixed-radix algorithms. A specific algorithm is described in detail and its computational complexity and run-time performance are compared with the corresponding mixed-radix algorithm.

Recently, a new family of discrete Fourier transform algorithms has been reported in which the structural complexity is significantly reduced without affecting the arithmetic complexity. In the present paper, a radix-a algorithm of this family is derived using the matrix factorization approach. This approach is known to be useful in mapping algorithms to architectures. An analysis of the computational complexity of this algorithm is carried out. A run-time comparison of the proposed algorithm is made with the Cooley-Tukey radix-2 algorithm.

Orthogonal transmultiplexers have been successfully utilized for multi-user communications. They are of the FDMA type in their most common version. Mostly, frequency-selective PR-QMFs were used in transmultiplexers as orthogonal user codes for CDMA communications reported in the literature. This conflicts with the fundamentals of CDMA theory. We introduce novel M-valued spread spectrum PR-QMF codes in this paper. It is shown that the proposed M-valued spread spectrum PR-QMF codes with minimized auto- and cross-correlation properties outperform the conventional Gold codes in CDMA communication scenarios considered in the paper.

A system of T resources (wireless channels) shared by a number of un-buffered applications is considered. The shared transmission resources are defined to be the slots (packet transmission times) of a TDMA frame (service cycle). Packets which are not allocated a channel within the current service cycle are dropped. The quality of service (QoS) vector is equivalently described in terms of (diverse) packet dropping probabilities (p/sub i/), or (diverse) packet dropping rates (d/sub i/). From a precisely defined region of achievable QoS vectors, easy to implement scheduling policies that deliver the achievable QoS vectors are derived. As an example, a policy that delivers a target QoS vector is derived; its performance is verified through simulations.

This paper is focused on the design of partial response equalized channels and maximum-likelihood sequence detection for high density magnetic recording systems. Methods for designing linearly equalized partial response channels are presented and applied to a Lorentzian model for the magnetic recording channel. We propose an architecture for multiresolution classification based on a wavelet decomposition and a hierarchical neural network. Each layer of the neural network is a "frequency expert" associated with a single frequency channel. Higher layers in the hierarchy integrate the information provided by the layers below, leading to a network where different "experts" cooperate to explain the input data. We illustrate the performance of this architecture on edge detection, a problem which is well known to be best addressed in a multiresolution framework.

It is well known that a proper interference exciser enhances the performance of a spread spectrum communications system. There have been several competing excision techniques reported in the literature. This paper presents a performance evaluation of those excision techniques via the analytical and computer simulation tools. It is found that the analytical performance tools presented are in match with the computer simulation results. It is also shown that a previously proposed adaptive time-frequency exciser consistently outperforms the existing interference excision techniques in the literature.

Matched-field processing (MFP) has been an active area of research in the last decade for estimating the location of a sound source and parameters related to the ocean channel. MFP yields estimates of the unknown parameters by matching the true received acoustic field to the theoretically predicted field calculated for sets of likely values for the unknown parameters. Successful demonstrations of the application of MFP to real data have been limited. Here, MFP is shown to provide both successful localization and focusing of the environment ('focalization') with real data collected in the Gulf of Mexico. The estimation is done by maximizing the correlation between the received and expected signals using simulated annealing.
