Due to the interdisciplinary nature of complex systems as a field, students studying complex systems at University level have diverse disciplinary backgrounds. This brings challenges (e.g. wide range of computer programming skills) but also opportunities (e.g. facilitating interdisciplinary interactions and projects) for the classroom. However, there is little published regarding how these challenges and opportunities are handled in teaching and learning complex Systems as an explicit subject in higher education, and how this differs in comparison to other subject areas. We seek to explore these particular challenges and opportunities via an interview-based study of pioneering teachers and learners (conducted amongst the authors) regarding their experiences. We compare and contrast those experiences, and analyse them with respect to the educational literature. Our discussions explored: approaches to curriculum design, how theories/models/frameworks of teaching and learning informed decisions and experience, how diversity in student backgrounds was addressed, and assessment task design. We found a striking level of commonality in the issues expressed as well as the strategies to handle them, for example a significant focus on problem-based learning, and the use of major student-led creative projects for both achieving and assessing learning outcomes. Psychological and personality profiles of political extremists

Global recruitment into radical Islamic movements has spurred renewed interest in the appeal of political extremism. Is the appeal a rational response to material conditions or is it the expression of psychological and personality disorders associated with aggressive behavior, intolerance, conspiratorial imagination, and paranoia? Empirical answers using surveys have been limited by lack of access to extremist groups, while field studies have lacked psychological measures and failed to compare extremists with contrast groups. We revisit the debate over the appeal of extremism in the U.S. context by comparing publicly available Twitter messages written by over 355,000 political extremist followers with messages written by non-extremist U.S. users. Analysis of text-based psychological indicators supports the moral foundation theory which identifies emotion as a critical factor in determining political orientation of individuals. Publishing articles in high-impact English journals is difficult for scholars around the world, especially for non-native English-speaking scholars (NNESs), most of whom struggle with proficiency in English. In order to uncover the differences in English scientific writing between native English-speaking scholars (NESs) and NNESs, we collected a large-scale data set containing more than 150,000 full-text articles published in PLoS between 2006 and 2015. We divided these articles into three groups according to the ethnic backgrounds of the first and corresponding authors, obtained by Ethnea, and examined the scientific writing styles in English from a two-fold perspective of linguistic complexity: (1) syntactic complexity, including measurements of sentence length and sentence complexity;and (2) lexical complexity, including measurements of lexical diversity, lexical density, and lexical sophistication. We present IDTxl (the Information Dynamics Toolkit xl), a new open source Python toolbox for effective network inference from multivariate time series using information theory, available from GitHub (https://***/pwollstadt/IDTxl). Information theory (Cover & Thomas, 2006;MacKay, 2003;Shannon, 1948) is the mathematical theory of information and its transmission over communication channels. Information theory provides quantitative measures of the information content of a single random variable (entropy) and of the information shared between two variables (mutual information). The defined measures build on probability theory and solely depend on the probability distributions of the variables involved. As a consequence, the dependence between two variables can be quantified as the information shared between them, without the need to explicitly model a specific type of dependence. Hence, mutual information is a model-free measure of dependence, which makes it a popular choice for the analysis of systems other than communication channels. Transfer entropy (TE) (Schreiber, 2000) is an extension of mutual information that measures the directed information transfer between time series of a source and a target variable. TE has become popular in many scientific disciplines to infer dependencies and whole networks from data. Notable application domains include neuroscience (Wibral, Vicente, & Lindner, 2014) and dynamical systems analysis (Lizier, Prokopenko, & Zomaya, 2014) (see Bossomaier, Barnett, Harré, & Lizier (2016) for an introduction to TE and a comprehensive discussion of its application). In the majority of the applications, TE is used in a bivariate fashion, where information transfer is quantified between all sourcetarget pairs. In a multivariate setting, however, such a bivariate analysis may infer spurious or redundant interactions, where multiple sources provide the same information about the target. Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) affects ~1% of children and adults and is partly caused by genetic factors. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis combining 53,660 OCD cases and 2,044,417 controls and identified 30 independent genome-wide significant loci. Gene-based approaches identified 249 potential effector genes for OCD, with 25 of these classified as the most likely causal candidates, including WDR6, DALRD3 and CTNND1 and multiple genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region. We estimated that ~11,500 genetic variants explained 90% of OCD genetic heritability. OCD genetic risk was associated with excitatory neurons in the hippocampus and the cortex, along with D₁ and D₂ type dopamine receptor-containing medium spiny neurons. OCD genetic risk was shared with 65 of 112 additional phenotypes, including all the psychiatric disorders we examined. In particular, OCD shared genetic risk with anxiety, depression, anorexia nervosa and Tourette syndrome and was negatively associated with inflammatory bowel diseases, educational attainment and body mass index. © The Author(s) 2025.

High blood pressure is a highly heritable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We report the largest genetic association study of blood pressure traits (systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure) to date in over 1 million people of European ancestry. We identify 535 novel blood pressure loci that not only offer new biological insights into blood pressure regulation but also highlight shared genetic architecture between blood pressure and lifestyle exposures. Our findings identify new biological pathways for blood pressure regulation with potential for improved cardiovascular disease prevention in the future.
