Voting is a game with a no-go theorem. New proofs of Arrow’s impossibility theorem are given based on quantum information theory. We show that the Arrowian dictator is equivalent to the perfect cloning circuit. We present Gedankenexperiment of voting and Bell-like inequalities of voting. Adaptive fuzzy control strategies are established to achieve global prescribed performance with prescribed-time convergence for strict-feedback systems with mismatched uncertainties and unknown nonlinearities. Firstly, to quantify the transient and steady performance constraints of the tracking error, a class of prescribed-time prescribed performance functions are designed, and a novel error transformation function is introduced to remove the initial value constraints and solve the singularity problem in existing works. Secondly, based on dynamic surface control methods, controllers with or without approximating structures are established to guarantee that the tracking error achieves prescribed transient performance and converges into a prescribed bounded set within prescribed time. In particular, the settling time and initial value of the prescribed performance function are completely independent of initial conditions of the tracking error and system parameters, which improves existing results. Moreover, with a novel Lyapunov-like energy function, not only the differential explosion problem frequently occurring in backstepping techniques is solved, but the drawback of the semi-global boundedness of tracking error induced by dynamic surface control can be overcome. Objective: Monitoring the depth of anesthesia (DoA) plays an important role for administering the drug injection during a surgery, i.e., preventing undesired awareness and inordinate anesthetic depth. Although the bispectral index (BIS) monitor is the golden standard system for the DoA monitoring, it is still not affordable for the developing countries. Alternatively, a low-cost electroencephalogram (EEG) headband can be used. The objective of this paper is to present a new algorithm for estimating the BIS values using a single frontal EEG channel. Method: In the first step, the EEG signal is filtered for the elimination of artifacts and is split into its sub-bands. In the second step, several linear and nonlinear features are extracted from each sub-band and fed to a random forest regression model in order to estimate the BIS. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed using EEG data recorded from twenty-four subjects during the general anesthesia and is validated in terms of correlation coefficient (CC) and absolute error (AE) between the reference and estimated BIS values. Results: The proposed algorithm achieved the mean CC of 0.83 and AE of 6.5 for intra subject variability and mean CC of 0.87 and AE of 5.5 for inter subject variability. Significance: Given the similar results for both intra and inter subject variability, the proposed algorithm has the potential to be used in the real-world scenario.

Flooding from storm surges, rainfall-runoff, and their interaction into compounding events are major natural hazards in coastal regions. To assess risks of damages to life and properties alike, numerical models are needed to guide emergency responses and future assessments. Numerical models, such as ADCIRC have over many decades shown their usefulness in such assessments. However, these models have a high threshold in terms of new user engagement as development and compilation is not trivial for users trained in compiled programming languages. Here, we develop a new open-source finite element solver for the numerical simulation of flooding. The numerical solution of the underlying PDEs is developed using the finite element framework FEniCSx. The goal is a framework where new methods can be rapidly tested before time-consuming development into codes like ADCIRC. We validate the framework on several test cases, including large-scale computations in the Gulf of Mexico for Hurricane Ike (2008).

In this paper, we propose two communication-efficient decentralized optimization algorithms over a general directed multi-agent network. The first algorithm, termed Compressed Push-Pull (CPP), combines the gradient tracking Push-Pull method with communication compression. We show that CPP is applicable to a general class of unbiased compression operators and achieves linear convergence rate for strongly convex and smooth objective functions. The second algorithm is a broadcast-like version of CPP (B-CPP), and it also achieves linear convergence rate under the same conditions on the objective functions. B-CPP can be applied in an asynchronous broadcast setting and further reduce communication costs compared to CPP. Numerical experiments complement the theoretical analysis and confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Metals in the diffuse, ionized gas at the boundary between the Milky Way’s interstellar medium (ISM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM), known as the disk-halo interface (DHI), are valuable tracers of the feedback processes that drive the Galactic fountain. However, metallicity measurements in this region are challenging due to obscuration by the Milky Way ISM and uncertain ionization corrections that affect the total hydrogen column density. In this work, we constrain the ionization corrections to neutral hydrogen column densities using precisely measured electron column densities from the dispersion measure of pulsars that lie in the same globular clusters as UV-bright targets with high-resolution absorption spectroscopy. We address the blending of absorption lines with the ISM by jointly fitting Voigt profiles to all absorption components. We present our metallicity estimates for the DHI of the Milky Way based on detailed photoionization modeling to the absorption from ionized metal lines and ionization-corrected total hydrogen columns. Generally, the gas clouds show a large scatter in metallicity, ranging between 0.04 − 3.2 Z, implying that the DHI consists of a mixture of gaseous structures having multiple origins. We estimate the inflow and outflow timescales of the DHI ionized clouds to be 6 − 35 Myr. Reaction wheels as the main actuators for attitude control of spacecraft are very prone to malfunction,which may significantly degrade the performance of the spacecraft attitude control *** this paper a novel active fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed to react the reaction wheel faults actively.A combined observer is first designed to detect the reaction wheel faults,by combining a traditional adaptive Luenberger observer and a newly designed neural network（NN） *** inherits the advantages of the low computational cost of the Luenberger observer and the high performance of the NN ***,a fault isolation scheme is given to locate ***,an adaptive fault-tolerant controller is designed to achieve graceful performance degradation under reaction wheel faults,based on the diagnosis results of the combined observer and the judgment results of the fault isolation ***,simulation results show that the proposed scheme is able to achieve precise fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control of spacecraft in the presence of external interference and limited computation.

This work is related to fluid flow over a rotating disk, which has attracted significant interest due to its applications in engineering, aerodynamics, and industrial processes. This research presents a detailed numerical solution of rotating flows of von Karman and Bodewadt. The system of boundary layer approximation consists of the external forces i.e. Hall current, magnetic field, thermal radiation, Darcy-Forchheimer porous model and slip mechanism. The governing equations are boundary value problem which is solved using bvp4c solver, that efficiently handles non-linear differential equations with boundary conditions at two different points. To further analyze the flow characteristics, we employ multivariate linear and polynomial regression models, providing data driven perspective on the dependency of SFC (skin friction coefficient) and LNN (local Nusselt number) on governing parameters. The study reports that, multivariate linear regression and polynomial regression are the machine learning approaches used to estimate the SFC and LNN values for the von Karman and Bodewadt flows, respectively. The MAE (mean absolute error), MSE (mean square error), and R 2 are used to evaluate the prediction's performance. The highest R 2 values for the implemented method is obtained as 0.98905073. The results obtained demonstrate the efficacy of machine learning techniques in this field.

Background: Green space has been linked with cardiovascular (CV) health. Nature access and quality may have significant impact on CV risk factors and health. Objectives: The authors aimed to investigate the relationship between NatureScore, a composite score for natural environment exposure and quality of green spaces, with CV risk factors and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). Methods: A cross-sectional study including one million adult patients from the Houston Methodist Learning Health System Outpatient Registry (2016-2022). NatureScore is a composite measure of natural environment exposure and quality (0-100) calculated for each patient based on residential address. NatureScores was divided into 4 categories: nature deficient/light (0-39), nature adequate (40-59), nature rich (60-79), and nature utopia (80-100). CV risk factors included hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Results: Among 1.07 million included patients (mean age 52 years, female 59%, Hispanic 16%, Non-Hispanic Black 14%), median NatureScore was 69.4. After adjusting for neighborhood walkability, patients living in highest NatureScore neighborhoods had lower prevalence of CV risk factors (OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.90-0.93) and ASCVD (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93-0.98) than those in lowest NatureScore neighborhoods. A significant interaction existed between NatureScore and Walkability (P < 0.001), where those in high NatureScore (≥60) high walkability (≥40) areas had lower prevalence of CV risk factors (OR: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.90-0.97, P < 0.001) and were more likely to have optimal CV risk profile (relative risk ratio: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.04-1.14, P = 0.001). Conclusions: These findings suggest that while green spaces benefit health, their accessibility through walkable environments is crucial for cardiovascular disease protection. © 2024 The Authors
