We report 24-30 nm spherical barium ferrite (S-BaFe) particles having extremely narrow size distribution without any superparamagnetic phase. We have converted spherical magnetite (S-Mag) nanoparticles to S-BaFe nanoparticles using a unique adsorption-diffusion process. The synthesized S-BaFe nanoparticles were characterized by x-ray diffractometer, Mössbauer spectrometer, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating magnetometer (VSM) for magnetic and physical properties. Saturation magnetization and coercivity of the S-BaFe nanoparticles were found to be 41.4 emu/g and 4075 Oe, respectively. The thermal stability of KUV/kBT = 107 was estimated for the S-BaFe nanoparticles from time-dependent remanent coercivity measurement. © 2009 IEEE.

The three-volume set LNCS 5101-5103 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on computational science, ICCS 2008, held in Krakow, Poland in June 2008. The 167 revised papers of the main conference track presented together with the abstracts of 7 keynote talks and the 100 revised papers from 14 workshops were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the three volumes. This book and its sister volumes constitute the Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2006) held in Chengdu in southwestern China during May 28–31, 2006. Based on rigorous reviews, 616 high-quality papers were selected for publication in the proceedings with the acceptance rate being less than 25%. The papers are organized in 27 cohesive sections covering all major topics of neural network research and development. In addition to the numerous contributed papers, ten distinguished scholars gave plenary speeches (Robert J. Marks II, Erkki Oja, Marios M. Polycarpou, Donald C. When a direct current (DC) electric field is applied across an ion-selective nanoporous membrane or a nanochannel with an overlapping Debye layer, a surprising microvortex instability occurs on the side of the membrane/channel through which counterions enter. Despite its micro and nano length scales, this instability exhibits all the hallmarks of other classical hydrodynamic instabilities—a subharmonic cascade, a wide-band fluctuation spectrum, and a coherent structure dominated by spatiotemporal dynamics. Moreover, the resulting convection enhances the ion flux into the ion-selective medium and gives rise to an overlimiting-current bifurcation in the current-voltage relationship. This hydrodynamically driven nonequilibrium ion flux does not seem to have any equivalent in cell membrane ion channels. Yet, by introducing asymmetric entrances to provide different polarized regions and/or viscous arrest of the vortex instability, one can fabricate a hydrodynamic nanofluidic diode. With other modifications, hysteretic, excitable, and oscillatory ion flux dynamics could also be elicited—all with strong hydrodynamic features.

In recent years, as part of the increasing “informationization” of industry and the economy, enterprises have been accumulating vast amounts of detailed data such as high-frequency transaction data in nancial markets and point-of-sale information onindividualitems in theretail sector. Similarly,vast amountsof data arenow ava- able on business networks based on inter rm transactions and shareholdings. In the past, these types of information were studied only by economists and management scholars. More recently, however, researchers from other elds, such as physics, mathematics, and information sciences, have become interested in this kind of data and, based on novel empirical approaches to searching for regularities and “laws” akin to those in the natural sciences, have produced intriguing results. This book is the proceedings of the international conference THICCAPFA7 that was titled “New Approaches to the Analysis of Large-Scale Business and E- nomic Data,” held in Tokyo, March 1–5, 2009. The letters THIC denote the Tokyo Tech (Tokyo Institute of Technology)–Hitotsubashi Interdisciplinary Conference. The conference series, titled APFA (Applications of Physics in Financial Analysis), focuses on the analysis of large-scale economic data. It has traditionally brought physicists and economists together to exchange viewpoints and experience (APFA1 in Dublin 1999, APFA2 in Liege ` 2000, APFA3 in London 2001, APFA4 in Warsaw 2003, APFA5 in Torino 2006, and APFA6 in Lisbon 2007). The aim of the conf- ence is to establish fundamental analytical techniques and data collection methods, taking into account the results from a variety of academic disciplines.

High-throughput DNA sequencing has considerably changed the possibilities for conducting biomedical research by measuring billions of short DNA or RNA fragments. A central computational problem, and for many applications a first step, consists of determining where the fragments came from in the original genome. In this article, we review the main techniques for generating the fragments, the main applications, and the main algorithmic ideas for computing a solution to the read alignment problem. In addition, we describe pitfalls and difficulties connected to determining the correct positions of reads.

The public-domain Ψ-Mag toolset uses generic-programming techniques to provide the computational magnetic-materials community an excellent opportunity for code reuse without loss of efficiency. Ψ-Mag provides a flexible implementation of the fast multipole method (FMM) for dipole-dipole calculations that does not depend on the geometry of the problem and is suitable for high-performance, parallel computers. Theoretically, the execution time for such a calculation should grow only linearly with the number of spins, and this is confirmed here for up to order 105 spins. In addition, the implementation efficiently uses a large number of processors. For a test case of 64 000 dipoles, the measured speedup is over 25 for 40 processors on a four-processor-per-node IBM SP; this compares quite favorably with less-flexible FMM implementations. The generic implementation allows for easy changes of the basis functions used to expand potentials specific to particular applications, facilitating direct comparison of different approaches. Here, the traditional spherical-harmonic expansions are compared to Cartesian expansions which reflect the cubic symmetries of meshes used in typical micromagnetic simulations.

Body joint modeling and human pose reconstruction provide precise motion and quantitative geometric information about human dynamics. The rich motion information obtained from human pose estimation plays important roles in a wide range of digital twin and connected health applications. However, current related researches have difficulties in extracting the joints’ spatial-temporal correlations from different levels. This is due to the poses being at various complexities in moving various joints differently. Hence, the typical conventional transformer method is non-adaptable and barely meets the aforementioned requirement. In this paper, we propose the Body Joint Interactive transFormers (BJIFormer) to extract the multi-level joints’ spatial-temporal information. The design enables the model to learn the inner joints’ correlation inside the body parts across frames and propagate the extracted information across the body parts with shared joints. The multi-level body joint interactive scheme has greater efficiency improvement by restricting the self-attention computation to partial body parts and connecting each body part by torso. The proposed interactive approach explores the spatial-temporal correlation following the hierarchical paradigm and effectively estimates and reconstructs 3D human poses.
