Displaced cultural objects often act as mediators of intercultural understanding due to their connection between the original and host communities. This study explores how immersive embodied VR biography enhances intercultural empathy and understanding of displaced cultural objects. We took the famous Chinese painting, the Admonitions Scroll, housed at the British Museum as an example to design an Immersive Biography in VR. We conducted an empirical study with 24 participants from source and non-source communities. Findings suggested that interacting with biographical narratives of displaced cultural objects in a personified embodied way can effectively promote intercultural empathy and understanding. Additionally, simulated intercultural scenarios and dialogues with personified cultural objects fostered intercultural empathy in both groups, with a stronger effect observed in non-source communities due to differences in cultural identity and personal connections. Our study provided the potential and practical insights of immersive technologies to inspire intercultural communication for displaced cultural objects. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). In this work, we introduce a natural notion concerning finite vector spaces. A family of k-dimensional subspaces of Fnq, which forms a partial spread, is called almost affinely disjoint if any (k + 1)-dimensional subspace containing a subspace from the family non-trivially intersects with only a few subspaces from the family. The central question discussed in the paper is the polynomial growth (in q) of the maximal cardinality of these families given the parameters k and n. For the cases k = 1 and k = 2, optimal families are constructed. For other settings, we find lower and upper bounds on the polynomial growth. The neutron-induced fission cross section of Pu239 was measured relative to U235(n,f) at the back-streaming white neutron beam line (Back-n) of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). A multicell fast fission ionization chamber was used to perform the measurement. The reliability of the measurement was verified by the high consistency of U235's resonances between the measurement and the evaluation data. The Pu239 fission cross sections from 4keV to 100MeV are obtained with 1.7–5.8 % uncertainty when unfolding uncertainties are excluded. The total uncertainties including the unfolding errors, which reflect the effect of the double-bunch unfolding method, are 2.6–15 % from 10keV to 100MeV.

On inf-convolution-based robust practical stabilization under computational uncertainty

This work is concerned with practical stabilization of nonlinear systems by means of inf-convolution-based sample-and-hold control. It is a fairly general stabilization technique based on a generic non-smooth control Lyapunov function (CLF) and robust to actuator uncertainty, measurement noise, etc. The stabilization technique itself involves computation of descent directions of the CLF. It turns out that non-exact realization of this computation leads not just to a quantitative, but also qualitative obstruction in the sense that the result of the computation might fail to be a descent direction altogether and there is also no straightforward way to relate it to a descent direction. Disturbance, primarily measurement noise, complicate the described issue even more. This work suggests a modified inf-convolution-based control that is robust w. r. t. system and measurement noise, as well as computational uncertainty. The assumptions on the CLF are mild, as, e. g., any piece-wise smooth function, which often results from a numerical LF/CLF construction, satisfies them. A computational study with a three-wheel robot with dynamical steering and throttle under various tolerances w. r. t. computational uncertainty demonstrates the relevance of the addressed issue and the necessity of modifying the used stabilization technique. Similar analyses may be extended to other methods which involve optimization, such as Dini aiming or steepest descent. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

The emergence of cloud computing technology has motivated a very high number of users in different organizations to access its services in running and delivering their various operations and services. However, this surge of cloud users has led to the problem of uneven load sharing among the cloud computing infrastructures. As a result, federated cloud infrastructure was initiated to provide more cloud computing resources to accommodate more cloud users’ requests and also to provide equal requests mapping with the available cloud resources. Nevertheless, the issue of unequal allocation of requests within the datacenter(s) that makes up the federated cloud environment still persists. This research work presents an intra-datacenter load balancing algorithm in a federated cloud environment named; the intra-balancer adapted throttled algorithm to evenly distribute requests in each datacenter that formulate the federated cloud infrastructures. The simulation of the intra-balancer was carried out in CloudAnalyst, the results of the implementation showed that the intra-balancer outperformed the Round-Robin and ESCE with 98.93ms and 2.26ms for the response and processing time respectively. The results assert that the intra-balancer algorithm provides a better load balancing solution in a federated cloud environment.

Temporal networks provide a unifying understanding of the evolution of cooperation

Understanding the evolution of cooperation in structured populations represented by networks is a problem of long research interest, and a most fundamental and widespread property of social networks related to cooperation phenomena is that the node’s degree (i.e., number of edges connected to the node) is heterogeneously distributed. Previous results indicate that static heterogeneous (i.e., degree-heterogeneous) networks promote cooperation in stationarity compared to static regular (i.e., degree-homogeneous) networks if equilibrium dynamics starting from many cooperators and defectors is employed. However, the above conclusion reverses if we employ non-equilibrium stochastic processes to measure the fixation probability for cooperation, i.e., the probability that a single cooperator successfully invades a population. Here we resolve this conundrum by analyzing the fixation of cooperation on temporal (i.e., time-varying) networks. We theoretically prove and numerically confirm that on both synthetic and empirical networks, contrary to the case of static networks, temporal heterogeneous networks can promote cooperation more than temporal regular networks in terms of the fixation probability of cooperation. Given that the same conclusion is known for the equilibrium fraction of cooperators on temporal networks, the present results provide a unified understanding of the effect of temporal degree heterogeneity on promoting cooperation across two main analytical frameworks, i.e., equilibrium and non-equilibrium ones. We present a preliminary result of the kaon semileptonic form factor calculated at the smallest lattice spacing in the PACS10 configurations, whose physical volumes are more than (10 fm)4 at the physical point. The configurations were generated using the Iwasaki gauge action and N f = 2 + 1 stout-smeared nonperturbatively O (a) improved Wilson quark action at the three lattice spacings, 0.085, 0.063, and 0.041 fm. The value of |Vus | in the continuum limit is estimated from our results including the preliminary one. We compare our result of |Vus | with the previous results and those through the kaon leptonic decay. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Systems built on top of blockchain are often inefficient. One reason for the inefficiency is that these systems include too many hash operations. To address this problem, we conduct an empirical study on the transaction history of a real-world blockchain-based system (i.e., Ethereum), which contains 300,821 accounts and 14,240,095 transactions. We found that the account usage frequency is highly heterogeneous. Based on this finding, this paper presents hierarchy bucket tree (HBT), an efficient account structure with user transaction behaviour information embedded, to reduce the number of hash operations and thus enhance the efficiency of blockchain-based systems. Extensive experiments have been conducted and the experimental results show that HBT reduces hash operations by nearly 80% compared with the existing account structure. In this paper, we generalize finite depth wavelet scattering transforms, which we formulate as Lq(Rn) norms of a cascade of continuous wavelet transforms (or dyadic wavelet transforms) and contractive nonlinearities. We then provide norms for these operators, prove that these operators are well-defined, and are Lipschitz continuous to the action of C2 diffeomorphisms in specific cases. Lastly, we extend our results to formulate an operator invariant to the action of rotations R ∈ SO(n) and an operator that is equivariant to the action of rotations of R ∈ SO(n). © 2022, CC BY.

The investigation of magnetic energy landscapes and the search for ground states of magnetic materials using ab initio methods like density functional theory (DFT) is a challenging task. Complex interactions, such as superexchange and spin-orbit coupling, make these calculations computationally expensive and often lead to non-trivial energy landscapes. Consequently, a comprehensive and systematic investigation of large magnetic configuration spaces is often impractical. We approach this problem by utilizing Bayesian Optimization, an active machine learning scheme that has proven to be efficient in modeling unknown functions and finding global minima. Using this approach we can obtain the magnetic contribution to the energy as a function of one or more spin canting angles with relatively small numbers of DFT calculations. To assess the capabilities and the efficiency of the approach we investigate the noncollinear magnetic energy landscapes of selected materials containing 3d, 5d and 5 f magnetic ions: Ba3MnNb2O9, LaMn2Si2, β-MnO2, Sr2IrO4, UO2 and Ba2NaOsO6. By comparing our results to previous ab initio studies that followed more conventional approaches, we observe significant improvements in efficiency. © 2024, CC BY.
