This paper proposes a new version of Particle Filter, called Articulated Particle Filter - ArPF -, which has been specifically designed for an efficient sampling of hierarchical spaces, generated by articulated objects. Our approach decomposes the articulated motion into layers for efficiency purposes, making use of a careful modeling of the diffusion noise along with its propagation through the articulations. This produces an increase of accuracy and prevent for divergences. The algorithm is tested on hand tracking due to its complex hierarchical articulated nature. With this purpose, a new dataset generation tool for quantitative evaluation is also presented in this paper.

In this paper, we present an inexpensive system for diverless video capture and fast image stitching of image frames for rapid reef assessment of shallow coral reefs. Our system has two main components: 1) Teardrop, a boat-towable, winged hull apparatus designed to house a commercial digital camera, and 2) a mosaicking algorithm to stitch the coral reef video into mosaics for further appreciation and analysis. The captured reef video is then separated into image frames which are to be stitched sequentially using Fast Image Labeling. The overlap between image frames is estimated using Single-Step DFT, an efficient sub-pixel estimation algorithm. The estimated overlap is used to compute for the area to be added to the mosaic space. The overlapping section between succeeding image-pairs are stitched along a seam determined by a minimal-cost path using dynamic programming. The visibility of the seam boundaries is further minimized by utilizing blending on multi-resolution splines. Experimental results on automated reef mosaics creation from actual coral reef video taken using Teardrop shows the performance of the system described. The main contribution of this work is the demonstration of a rapid reef visualization system using a diverless system and commercially available, non-research-grade imaging equipment.

A pathway-based approach for analyzing microarray data using random forests

Although machine learning methods, such as random forests, have been developed to correlate survival outcomes with a set of genes, less study has assessed the abilities of these methods in incorporating pathway information for analyzing microarray data. In general, genes that are identified without incorporating biological knowledge are more difficult to interpret. Thus, the pathway-based survival analysis using machine learning methods represents a promising approach for generating new biological hypothesis from microarray studies. The two popular variants of random forests used in this research for survival data are random survival forests and bivariate node-splitting random survival forests. There are three types of datasets used for this research and each dataset with a three-level outcome. This research which compared the four splitting rules available in random survival forests to identify log-rank test is the most accurate in terms of prediction error. To evaluate the accuracy of pathway based survival approach, this research considered employing area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for censored data. The use of random survival forests for survival outcomes in analyzing microarray data allows researchers to obtain results that are more closely tied with the biological mechanism of diseases.

To increase the scalability of cloud computing, utilizing resources of individual users has been widely adopted especially in video streaming services. Accurately predicting behavior of user nodes is critical to achieve a high efficiency in such a peer-assisted system. Though there have been many measurement studies on peer-to-peer systems, most of them have focused on the design and characterization of the systems. Thus the behavior patterns of individual nodes have seldom been studied. In this paper, we present new techniques for classifying behavior of nodes in terms of availability and compare them with naive manual classification. We apply a k-means clustering algorithm with various classification criteria on real trace data of a peer-to-peer system. Our analysis shows that there are three dominant time zones with respect to the availability peak time. Our study will give a useful hint to a system designer in handling churns more efficiently based on the peer classification.

Microarray ade4 or known as MADE4 is a multivariate software analysis package for microarray gene expression data. This software package is capable of accepting wide variety of gene expression data formats such as Bioconductor Affy Batch and exprSet. This MADE4 R package extends the advantages of ade4 package in multivariate statistical and graphical functions for the use in the microarray data application. Moreover, MADE4 provides new graphical and visualization tools that assist in the interpretation of multivariate analysis of microarray data. Besides that, LLSimpute algorithm has been incorporated to assist in handling of datasets with missing values and this has eased the application for the users to analysis on gene expression data that contain missing values.

A tuning parameter selector method for the gsvm-scad in determining significant genes and biological pathway

A hybrid of support vector machines and a smoothly clipped absolute deviation with group-specific penalty terms (gSVM-SCAD) is a penalized classifier that has been used to identify and select significant pathways in pathway-based microarray analysis. Despite its advantages in identifying significant pathways, the gSVM-SCAD has some limitations, as it depends on the proper choice of tuning parameter. If the tuning parameter is too small, it can bring little sparsity and overfit to the classifier model, while if it is too large, it can make much sparsity to the classifier model and produce poor discriminating power. Therefore, it is important to choose an appropriate tuning parameter selector method for the gSVM-SCAD. The generalized cross validation (GACV) has been widely used as a tuning parameter selector method. Unfortunately, GACV has some limitations where it poorly performs when dealing with the low number of variables (in this paper referred as genes) and large sample sizes. This is because some pathways contain not more than 100 genes and even some pathways contain less than 10 genes. This scenario can lead to the poor performance of SCAD in selecting the informative genes and simultaneously identifying significant ones. In order to surmount the limitations of the gSVM-SCAD, we proposed to use the B-type generalized approximate cross validation (BGACV) as a tuning parameter selector method for gSVM-SCAD. Retinal vessel tortuosity has shown to be significantly associated with cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Despite importance of this field a few techniques have been proposed yet. All previous methods rely on a vessel extraction phase, which its accuracy affects final output and also time consuming. Nobility of presented algorithm is to introduce a method for evaluating retinal vessel tortuosity without any explicit vessel detection. We use the Circular Hough Transform (CHT) based on gradient field of the retinal image. Each vessel curve is detected as a semi-circle by Hough transform and tortuosity of the curve is determined with the help of accumulated value of circle center and its radius. As there are no any specific database for tortuosity evaluation, the algorithm was tasted on database consisting of 40 images, mixture of DRIVE database and images from Khatam-Al-Anbia Hospital consisting of 40 retinal images, of which 20 were tortuous and 20 were non-tortuous. The proposed algorithm can achieve classification rate of 92% along with less computation time in compare of previous methods. © 2011 IEEE.

Social media has received substantial attention in last five years due to its focal point on analysis and relationships among persons and on the models and repercussions of these relationships. In the meantime, with the fast augment in production and distribution of multimedia content, effectively integrating context and content for multimedia mining, management, indexing and retrieval on the Internet has become an evident and difficult problem. The interest in these areas is demonstrated by a significantly increasing number of publications each year. In this paper, we give an overview of the key theoretical and empirical advances in the current decade related to social media retrieval by considering not only the multimedia content analysis but also the behavioural analysis of the users. We also discuss the significant challenges involved in the adaptation of existing multimedia content analysis techniques for interactive content sharing in social and P2P networks. © 2011 ACM.

An eigenshape kernel based mean shift tracker is proposed in this paper. In contrast with the symmetric constant kernel used in the traditional mean shift tracker, this tracker employs eigenshape to construct an arbitrarily shaped kernel that is adaptive to object shape. Therefore, background information is adaptively excluded from the target. Furthermore, the eigenshape kernels are integrated with color and gradient features, which enhance tracking robustness. Experiments demonstrate that this tracker outperforms the traditional mean shift tracker significantly especially when target shape deformation, target occlusion and background clutter occur.
