This paper presents a simple but very powerful technique to support user interface evaluation, along with a prototype implementation of this technique. This technique provides tools to allow the user interface evaluator to combine event streams and video recording, analyzing the event stream to search for patterns of interesting or important user actions, then using the recorded timestamps associated with these actions to present only the sections of the video recording of interest. This allows, for example, all places where the user invokes a help system or a particular command to be observed without requiring the evaluator to manually search the recording or sit through long sessions of unrelated interactions. By combining the precise recording of automatic event trace capture with the rich contextual information that can be captured in a video and audio recording, this technique allows analyses to be performed that would not be practical with either media alone.

We have designed and developed a hierarchical framework for composition of multimedia documents. This framework forms the basis of an important analysis technique for developing high level authoring tools. From the perspective of aiding the task of multimedia production, the emphasis has been placed on the generality and uniformity of the framework and on support for new techniques to improve the authoring environment. Specifically, this framework supports flexible synchronization and flow control as well as a range of interactive, continuous, and discrete media in a uniform fashion. We adopt the hierarchical composition approach in order to support a style of analysis similar to the semantic analysis performed in programming language translation. This analysis capability provides a robust base upon which a number of potential high-level authoring facilities can be built including resource analysis for conflict detection and resolution, interactive specification and editing of the temporal relationships among multiple media materials, and automatic synthesis of candidate solutions for detected problems. We examine various important aspects of this framework and describe how the potential high level authoring tools can be implemented using its analysis capability.

As parallel and distributed computers become more widely available and used, the already important process of understanding and debugging concurrent programs will rake on even greater importance. We believe that visualization can help in the process. We discuss heretofore unaddressed issues in the visualization of concurrent programs, and present the Animation Choreographer. The Animation Choreographer allows users to view, manipulate, and explore the set of alternate feasible orderings of the program execution under study, both through the Choreographer interface and in the context of the selected visualizations, thus providing the user with a variety of temporal perspectives on the computation.< >

As algorithm animation systems become more widely available and easy to use, instructors will have the opportunity to utilize these systems to assist their teaching. Although algorithm animation systems have generated excitement and interest in both teachers and students, little empirical evidence exists to promote their use. This article describes a study involving the use of algorithm animations in classroom and laboratory settings. Results indicated that allowing students to create their own examples in a laboratory session led to higher accuracy on a post-test examination of understanding as compared to students who viewed prepared examples or no laboratory examples.< >

Addresses the needs and requirements of integrating visualization and geographic information system technologies. There are three levels of integration methods: rudimentary, operational and functional. The rudimentary approach uses the minimum amount of data sharing and exchange between these two technologies. The operational level attempts to provide consistency of the data while removing redundancies between the two technologies. The functional form attempts to provide transparent communication between these respective software environments. At this level, the user only needs to request information and the integrated system retrieves or generates the information depending upon the request. This paper examines the role and impact of these three levels of integration. Stepping further into the future, the paper also questions the long-term survival of these separate disciplines.< >
