High speed networks have characteristics of high bandwidth, long queuing delay, and high burstiness which make it difficult to address issues such as fairness, low queuing delay and high link utilization. Current high speed networks carry heterogeneous TCP flows which makes it even more challenging to address these issues. Since sender centric approaches do not meet these challenges, there have been several proposals to address them at router level via queue management (QM) schemes. These QM schemes have been fairly successful in addressing either fairness issues or large queuing delay but not both at the same time. We propose a new QM scheme called Approximated-Fair and controlled-Delay (AFCD) queuing for high speed networks that aims to meet following design goals: approximated fairness, controlled low queuing delay, high link utilization and simple implementation. The design of AFCD utilizes a novel synergistic approach by forming an alliance between approximated fair queuing and controlled delay queuing. It uses very small amount of state information in sending rate estimation of flows and makes drop decision based on a target delay of individual flow. Through experimental evaluation in a l0Gbps high speed networking environment, we show AFCD meets our design goals by maintaining approximated fair share of bandwidth among flows and ensuring a controlled very low queuing delay with a comparable link utilization.

An analysis of spectrum sensing and transmission of a secondary user sharing a channel with a licensed primary user is presented. The primary user access patterns are modeled as an on-off Markov process. A five state Markov model is derived to describe the performance of a secondary user that aims to utilize the channel during its idle state. Assuming perfect knowledge of the primary user access patterns, the model is analyzed with respect to the size of a back-off counter chosen when the channel is sensed busy and the size of the window allocated for secondary transmission when the channel is sensed idle. An analytical region is derived for the secondary users to operate in while the primary channel is free. © 2012 University of Split.

Solving linear systems of equations is ubiquitous in all areas of science and engineering. With rapidly growing data sets, such a task can be intractable for classical computers, as the best known classical algorithms require a time proportional to the number of variables N. A recently proposed quantum algorithm shows that quantum computers could solve linear systems in a time scale of order log (N), giving an exponential speedup over classical computers. Here we realize the simplest instance of this algorithm, solving 2×2 linear equations for various input vectors on a quantum computer. We use four quantum bits and four controlled logic gates to implement every subroutine required, demonstrating the working principle of this algorithm.

Increasingly powerful, yet low-cost computing and sensing devices are now available for use in student designs and embedded mechatronic systems. The Microsoft Kinect, for example, though initially developed as a gaming device, provides rich sensing possibilities, with camera and depth images, again at remarkably low cost. However, the sophistication of such devices often requires a high degree of programming ability in order to exploit their evident capabilities. This paper describes progress on a National Science Foundation and Math Works sponsored project aimed at making these devices more accessible to student users through the use of Automatic Code Generation techniques. Specifically, the paper describes a new toolbox that has been developed which allows students to perform their designs from within the Matlab / Simulink environment, and then to implement these designs directly on a hardware platform coupled to the Kinect system. Students develop their designs using interconnected Simulink blocks and subsystems, and the 'build' process automatically cross-compiles and downloads the model to the target for execution. External mode capability can be used to monitor the target hardware as it executes in real time, enabling the user to tune model parameters and log data while their application is running. An example showing how the Kinect can be integrated into a higher level system design is shown as an example. © 2012 American Society for engineering Education.

In this paper, the discrete-time antilinear systems are investigated. Firstly, a closed-form expression for the state response of discrete-time antilinear systems is established. Secondly, the concepts of reachability and controllability are proposed for discrete-time antilinear systems. With the closed-form expression of the state reponse as tools, anti-Gram criteria for reachability are given. In addition, a matrix rank criteria for reachability and controllability is given for time-invariant antilinear systems. In addition, an anti-Lyapnov equation approach is given to check the stability of the time-invariant antilinear systems.

Most modern digital signal processors (DSPs) provide multiple address registers and a dedicated address generation unit (AGU) which performs address generation in parallel to instruction execution. There is no address computation overhead if the next address is within the auto-modify range. A careful placement of variables in memory is utilized to decrease the number of address arithmetic instructions and thus to generate compact and efficient code. The simple offset assignment (SOA) problem concerns the layout of variables for machines with one address register and the general offset assignment (GOA) deals with multiple address registers. Both these problems assume that each variable needs to be allocated for the entire duration of a program. Both SOA and GOA are NP-complete. In this article, we present effective heuristics for the simple and the general offset assignment problems with variable coalescing where two or more noninterfering variables can be mapped into the same memory location. Results on several benchmarks show the significant improvement of our proposed heuristics compared to other heuristics in the literature © 2012 ACM.

The problem of sharing radio spectrum is analyzed using a multiple server queueing model which represents channels owned by primary users and allowed opportunistic access by a secondary user group. The primary users are constrained to occupy a group of adjacent channels for wideband transmission, whereas the secondary users utilize a single channel for narrowband transmission. The blocking performance of wideband and narrowband users are compared under two policies of channel allocation among the primary and secondary users. These policies differentiate the performance based on allocation of non-overlapping and overlapping blocks of contiguous channels to the wideband and narrowband users. The influence of the number of excess channels that can only be utilized by secondary users is also presented. A computational model developed to estimate the blocking probabilities of NB and WB users is shown to be expressed as a function of the offered loads (ρN, ρw) and the ratio of the service rates (μW/ μN). The performance impact of providing WB users a block of adjacent channels instead of distributing the requirement across the group of available channels is analyzed. The adjacency constraint will in general decrease the channel availability of WB users, but can improve the probability of channel allocation to NB users. The proposed scheme allows estimation of feasible operating regions of ρN, given a WB group size and ρw. © 2012 University of Split.

Owing to ship's high inertia, strong time lag, non-linearity and under-actuated characteristics, as well as sustaining external disturbances frequently, designing a high performance ship tracking controller is still one of the most important research topics of ship motion control. Active Disturbance Rejection control (ADRC) is proved to be very effective control method because it is independent of mathematical model of the plant and can compensate the internal and external disturbances dynamically. This paper investigates the applications of ADRC in ship motion tracking control and presents the design method of ADRC controller appropriate for ship tracking control. Firstly, ship motion mathematical model is introduced briefly and the linear ADRC (LADRC) is analyzed. Then considering the nonlinear ship track design model as a third order plant after utilizing variable substitution, a LADRC controller is designed by using fourth order linear extended state observer (LESO). At last, the simulation is performed. Simulation results show that the controller has a good tracking performance and disturbance rejection ability and is robust to the ship motion nonlinear characteristic and the external disturbances. The tracking process is fast, smooth and minor energy consumption. © 2012 IEEE.

The framework is designed to provide a simple and powerful way of Web application component development. Components of the framework can nest, and the framework is designed to be easy to reuse as a component, thus providing its components to be used by the host application. We explain the interfaces required to make this possible - what they provide, what issues they solve, and how their requirement was discovered. We also identify shortcomings of this approach, and issues that will be addressed by future work.
