We present a general mathematical description of the top-down attention control problem. Three important components are identified in the model: context extraction, attention focus and decision making. The context gives a coarse blurry representation of the whole input;the attention module models the focus of attention on a limited part of input, and the decision making component accounts the final decision of the agent for its motory actions. In order to achieve a faster convergence of attention learning in the online phase, an offline optimization step is performed in advance. To do so, we incorporate the knowledge of a full observer agent that has approximately learned the optimal decision making of the task. The simulation results show that by employing our algorithm, the learning speed is improved.

This paper presents a novel approach to solve the constrained unit commitment problem using the Selective Self-Adaptive Ant Colony Optimization (SSACO) for improving search performance by automatically adapting ant populations and their transition probability parameters, which cooperates with the Candidate Path Management Module (CPMM) and the Effective Repairing Heuristic Module (ERHM) in reducing search space and recovering a feasible optimality region so that a high quality solution can be acquired in a very early iterative. A new concept of the Relativity Pheromone Updating (RPU) is also introduced to provide a reasonable evaluation of the pheromone trail intensity among the agents. The proposed SSACO method not only enhances the convergence of search process, but also provides a suitable number of the population sharing which conducts a good guidance for trading-off between the importance of the visibility and the pheromone trail intensity. The proposed method has been performed on a test system up to 100 generating units with a scheduling time horizon of 24 hours. The numerical results show the most economical saving in the total operating cost when compared to the previous literature results. Moreover, the proposed SSACO topology can remarkably speed up the computational time of ant colony optimization, which is favorable for a large-scale UC problem implementation.

We review some of the recent advances in the development of subwavelength plasmonic devices for manipulating light at the nanoseale, drawing examples from our own work in metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) plasmonic waveguide devices. We introduce bends, splitters, and mode converters for MDM waveguides with no additional loss. We also demonstrate that optical gain provides a mechanism for on/off switching in MDM plasmonic waveguides. Highly efficient compact couplers between dielectric waveguides and MDM waveguides are also introduced.

The residual error in the WAAS solution contains low frequency elements that reduce the accuracy of the vertical navigation during flight tests of precision approaches conducted at The University of Oklahoma. In an effort to determine if the WAAS-enabled GPS solution can be improved, the character of the errors was first determined. Static position error data from ten, geographically diverse, WAAS reference stations were initially collected continuously over the period of a month. A primary step in identifying the sources of error was to evaluate the spectral (periodic) content of the error signal. However, characterizing the spectral content of the error signal presents problems due to the extremely high sampling rate relative to the extremely slow periods of interest in the error signal. The WAAS signal was sampled at 1 Hz, yet the periods of interest are on the order of 10-5 Hz. Using our proposed method for extracting the near DC frequency content, it is shown that the WAAS residual error primarily contains periodic elements on the order of 6, 12, and 24 hours, which correspond to frequencies of approximately 4.6x10-5, 2.3x10-5, and 1.2x10-5 Hz, respectively. These results were consistent across the disparate geographic regions represented by the data set. Due to this, we think it unlikely that multi-path is responsible for these slow, periodic components in the residual error signal. Therefore, it is likely the periodic elements of the error signal are due primarily to the ionosphere.
