The stochastic gradient (SG) identification algorithm has a poor convergence rate. We extend the SG algorithm from the viewpoint of innovation modification and present multi-innovation stochastic gradient (MISG) identification algorithms. Since the multi-innovation stochastic gradient algorithms use not only the current data but also the past data at each iteration, parameter estimation accuracy can be improved. Further, we study the performance of the SG and MISG algorithms and show that the MISG algorithms have faster convergence rates and better tracking performance than their corresponding SG algorithms by simulation results

Electroencephalographic (EEG) analysis has been widely adopted for the monitoring of cognitive state changes and sleep stages because abundant information in EEG recording reflects changes in drowsiness, arousal, sleep, and attention, etc. In this study, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based silicon spiked electrode array, namely dry electrodes, are fabricated and characterized to bring EEG monitoring to the operational workplaces without requiring conductive paste or scalp preparation. An isotropic/anisotropic reactive ion etching with inductive coupled plasma (RIE-ICP) micromachining fabrication process was developed to manufacture the needle-like micro probes to pierce the stratum corneum of skin and obtain superior electrically conducting characteristics. This article reports a series of prosperity testing and evaluations of continuous EEG recordings. Our results suggest that the dry electrodes have advantages in electrode-skin interface impedance, signal intensity and size over the conventional (wet) electrodes. In addition, we also developed an EEG-based drowsiness estimation system that consists of the dry-electrode array, power spectrum estimation, Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based EEG signal analysis, and multivariate linear regression to estimate driver's drowsiness level in a virtual-reality-based dynamic driving simulator to demonstrate the potential applications of the MEMS electrodes in operational environments. ©2006 IEEE.

In this paper we consider ad-hoc networks of robotic agents with double integrator dynamics. For such networks, the connectivity maintenance problems are: (i) do there exist control inputs for each agent to maintain network connectivity, and (ii) given desired controls for each agent, can one compute the closest connectivity-maintaining controls in a distributed fashion. The proposed solution is based on three contributions. First, we define and characterize admissible sets for double integrators to remain inside disks. Second, we establish an existence theorem for the connectivity maintenance problem by introducing a novel state-dependent graph, called the double-integrator disk graph. Finally, we design a distributed "flow-control" algorithm to compute optimal connectivity-maintaining controls

This paper presents a novel method for detecting multiple frontal faces in still images using multi-scale processing. The main characteristic of this algorithm is its stability in detecting faces with seldom false detections and a high correct detection rate. The novelty of this work comes from the utilization of multiscale detection and using two classifiers to reduce false detections. The algorithm generally has two stages: in the first stage, a face is detected in a unique scale and in the second stage, only the faces that are located in the neighbor scales are accepted as real faces. Consequently, a still image is first resized and scanned block wise, and then each enhanced block is tested for being face. One dimensional Harr wavelet is used for feature extraction, which gives appropriate discriminating features between the face and nonface classes. Detection results at each scale are accumulated in an internal database, so the ultimate detection is prepared based on the mutual detection information between consequent scales. To parameterize both the Bayesian and the simple proposed classifier, 2,643 faces were congregated from famous face databases and more than 10,000 non-face samples were selected from nature images. Experimental results using images gathered from known databases like MIT-CMU show great ability of the proposed algorithm in detecting faces.

We propose an adaptive output-feedback controller for a general class of nonlinear triangular (strict-feedback-like) systems. The design is based on our recent results on a dual high-gain observer and controller architecture with a dynamic scaling. The technique provides strong robustness properties and allows the system class to contain unknown functions dependent on all states and involving unknown parameters (with no magnitude bounds required). Unlike our earlier result on this problem where a time-varying design of the high-gain scaling parameter was utilized, the technique proposed here achieves an autonomous dynamic controller by introducing a novel design of the observer, the scaling parameter, and the adaptation parameter. This provides a time-invariant dynamic output-feedback controller for the benchmark open problem proposed in our earlier work with no magnitude bounds or sign information on the unknown parameter being necessary

Repetitive processes propagate information in two independent directions and are of both systems theoretic and applications interest. They cannot be controlled by direct extension of existing techniques from either standard (termed ID here) or 2D systems theory. Here we give new results on the design of physically based feedforward/feedback control laws to achieve desired performance and disturbance decoupling in the sense defined in the body of the paper. The new results are for the case when only output (as opposed to state) information is used to activate the control law

Channel assignment problem in cellular communication is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem. There is no exact polynomial-time solution for it and searching the whole solution space is infeasible for large problems. By defining the problem's cost function as the energy function of a chaotic Hopfield neural network, we devise a framework for finding competitive suboptimal or even optimal solutions for combinatorial optimization problem in general, and channel assignment problem in particular. In our architecture, we inject chaotic noise in order to help the network escape from local minima of the energy function while we enforce problem constraints by external inputs of neurons. Experimental results show the superiority of our method to other methods.

In "Magnetic Bearing Measurement Configurations and Associated Robustness and Performance Limitations", Thibeault and Smith demonstrate that self-sensing magnetic bearings are impractical due to fundamental limitations in the achievable closed-loop robustness. Due to experimental data which appeared to contradict these results, Maslen, Montie, and Iwasaki showed that significantly better robustness is achievable in "Robustness limitations in self-sensing magnetic bearings" if the magnetic bearing is modeled as a linear periodic (LP) system rather than the linear time invariant (LTI) system used by Thibeault and Smith. The present paper explores why modeling the self-sensing magnetic bearing as a LP system improves the achievable robustness. This is accomplished by utilizing lifting to analyze the LP model as a MIMO discrete LTI system.

This paper investigates the problem of stabilization for a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system with nonuniform uncertain sampling. The sampling is not required to be periodic, and the only assumption is that the distance between any two consecutive sampling instants is less than a given bound. By using the input delay approach, the T-S fuzzy system with variable uncertain sampling is transformed into a continuous-time T-S fuzzy system with a delay in the state. A new condition guaranteeing asymptotic stability of the closed-loop sampled-data system is derived by a Lyapunov approach plus the free weighting matrix technique. Based on this stability condition, two procedures for designing state-feedback control laws are given: one casts the controller design into a convex optimization by introducing some over design, and the other utilizes the cone complementarity linearization (CCL) idea to cast the controller design into a sequential minimization problem subject to linear matrix inequality (LMI) constraints, which can be readily solved using standard numerical software.

This paper is a study of the optimization of a configuration and reconfiguration problem applied to the navy ship power system presenting a redundant power distribution layout. The multiagent method has been applied in order to make the power system converge towards its optimal configuration in its initial start up and during normal operation when a reconfiguration is required. The optimal process has been achieved by the agents and the simulations have been conducted with different cases of operation mode of the navy ship. The optimal configurations were derived through a program written in C++ for the agents and the results confirm the feasibility of applying the multiagent method for optimizing the navy ship power system
