KAGRA is a 3-km interferometric gravitational wave telescope located in the Kamioka mine in Japan. It is the first km-class gravitational wave telescope constructed underground to reduce seismic noise, and the first km-class telescope to use cryogenic cooling of test masses to reduce thermal noise. The construction of the infrastructure to house the interferometer in the tunnel, and the initial phase operation of the interferometer with a simple 3-km Michelson configuration have been completed. The first cryogenic operation is expected in 2018, and the observing runs with a full interferometer are expected in 2020s. The basic interferometer configuration and the current status of KAGRA are described. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Solar power availability is intermittent and must be accompanied by an energy storage system (ESS) so that the effect of variability can be minimized. Hence, a strategy is needed to find the optimum combination of grid power, solar power, and power from the ESS so that the total cost of energy can be minimized. A solution to this problem is proposed here as Advanced Optimal Resource Allocation (AORA). This control scheme uses the prediction of Photovoltaic (PV) power availability, the real-time price of energy, and the levelized cost of energy for both PV and ESS to optimally combine the dispatch of power sources. Simulation results are presented for a 24 h prediction window and compared with a baseline power usage scheme that is based on a fixed charging and discharging schedule for the ESS. The comparison shows that AORA results in a substantial cost savings over the baseline scheme. © 2018 IEEE.

Since the multicore CPU has been released, the parallel programming method has become a significant issue to programmers. For parallel programming, functional languages such as Haskell are especially attractive since they reduce the data dependency hindering parallelism. One of the popular parallel programming models of Haskell is Cloud Haskell. Though it is an effective model for the manycore environments, it is quite difficult to use compared with other models. This paper proposes an efficient Haskell programming model for the manycore system named SAM. SAM takes advantages of the outstanding performance of Cloud Haskell and overcomes its disadvantages. To present the performance of SAM, we developed four different applications for the experiment. According to the experimental result, the compilation time of using SAM increased 5%, and execution time reduced 0.2%, respectively, compared with Cloud Haskell. In addition, the code size of using SAM reduced to 86% on the parallel part.

Acute ischemic stroke （AIS）, as the third leading cause of death worldwide, is characterized by its high incidence, mortality rate, high incurred disability rate, and frequent reoccurrence. The neuroprotective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract （GBE） against several cerebral diseases have been reported in previous studies, but the underlying mechanisms of action are still unclear. Using a novel in vitro rat cortical capillary endothelial cell- astrocyte-neuron network model, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of GBE and one of its important constituents, Ginkgolide B （GB）, against oxygenglucose deprivation/reoxygenation and glucose （OGD/R） injury. In this model, rat cortical capillary endothelial cells, astrocytes, and neurons were cocultured so that they could be synchronously observed in the same system. Pretreatment with GBE or GB increased the neuron cell viability, ameliorated cell injury, and inhibited the cell apoptotic rate through Bax and Bcl-2 expression regulation after OGD/R injury. Furthermore, GBE or GB pretreatment enhanced the transendothelial electrical resistance of capillary endothelial monolayers, reduced the endothelial permeability coefficients for sodium fluorescein （Na-F）, and increased the expression levels of tight junction proteins, namely, ZO-1 and occludin, in endothelial cells. Results demonstrated the preventive effects of GBE on neuronal cell death and enhancement of the function of brain capillary endothelial monolayers after OGD/R injury in vitro; thus, GBE could be used as an effective neuroprotective agent for AIS/reperfusion, with GB as one of its significant constituents.

Second-order coding rates for key distillation in quantum key distribution

The security of quantum key distribution has traditionally been analyzed in either the asymptotic or non-asymptotic regimes. In this paper, we provide a bridge between these two regimes, by determining second-order coding rates for key distillation in quantum key distribution under collective attacks. Our main result is a formula that characterizes the backoff from the known asymptotic formula for key distillation-our formula incorporates the reliability and security of the protocol, as well as the mutual information variances to the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper. In order to determine secure key rates against collective attacks, one should perform a joint optimization of the Holevo information and the Holevo information variance to the eavesdropper. We show how to do so by analyzing several examples, including the six-state, BB84, and continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols (the last involving Gaussian modulation of coherent states along with heterodyne detection). The technical contributions of this paper include one-shot and second-order analyses of private communication over a compound quantum wiretap channel with fixed marginal and key distillation over a compound quantum wiretap source with fixed marginal. We also establish the second-order asymptotics of the smooth max-relative entropy of quantum states acting on a separable Hilbert space, and we derive a formula for the Holevo information variance of a Gaussian ensemble of Gaussian states. We theoretically analyze the nonlinear anomalous Nernst effect as the second-order response of temperature gradient by using the semiclassical framework of electron dynamics. We find that a nonlinear current can be generated transverse to the applied temperature gradient in time-reversal-symmetry materials with broken inversion symmetry. This effect has a quantum origin arising from the Berry curvature of states near the Fermi surface. We discuss the nonlinear Nernst effect in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) under the application of uniaxial strain. In particular, we predict that under fixed chemical potential in TMDCs, the nonlinear Nernst current exhibits a transition from T−2 temperature dependence in low temperature regime to a linear T dependence in high temperature.

A fully homomorphic encryption system hides data from unauthorized parties while still allowing them to perform computations on the encrypted data. Aside from the straightforward benefit of allowing users to delegate computations to a more powerful server without revealing their inputs, a fully homomorphic cryptosystem can be used as a building block in the construction of a number of cryptographic functionalities. Designing such a scheme remained an open problem until 2009, decades after the idea was first conceived, and the past few years have seen the generalization of this functionality to the world of quantum machines. Quantum schemes prior to the one implemented here were able to replicate some features in particular use cases often associated with homomorphic encryption but lacked other crucial properties, for example, relying on continual interaction to perform a computation or leaking information about the encrypted data. We present the first experimental realization of a quantum fully homomorphic encryption scheme. To demonstrate the versatility of a a quantum fully homomorphic encryption scheme, we further present a toy two-party secure computation task enabled by our scheme.

Robust control of the sit-to-stand movement for a powered lower limb orthosis

The sit-to-stand movement is a key feature for wide adoption of powered lower limb orthoses for patients with complete paraplegia. In this paper we study the control of the ascending phase of the sit-to-stand movement for a minimally actuated powered lower limb orthosis at the hips. First, we generate a pool of finite horizon Linear Quadratic Regulator feedback gains, designed under the assumption that we can control not only the torque at the hips but also the loads at the shoulders that in reality are applied by the user. Next we conduct reachability analysis to define a performance metric measuring the robustness of each controller against parameter uncertainty, and choose the best controller from the pool with respect to this metric. Then, we replace the presumed shoulder control with an Iterative Learning control algorithm as a substitute for human experiments. Indeed this algorithm obtains torque and forces at the shoulders that result in successful simulations of the sit-to-stand movement, regardless of parameter uncertainty and factors deliberately introduced to hinder learning. Thus it is reasonable to expect that the superior cognitive skills of real users will enable them to cooperate with the hip torque controller through training. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. This study presents a technique to safely control the Sit-to-Stand movement of powered lower limb orthoses in the presence of parameter uncertainty. The weight matrices used to calculate the finite time horizon linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) gain in the feedback loop are chosen from a pool of candidates as to minimize a robust performance metric involving induced gains that measure the deviation of variables of interest in a linear time-varying (LTV) system, at specific times within a finite horizon, caused by a perturbation signal modeling the variation of the parameters. Two relevant Sit-to-Stand movements are simulated for drawing comparisons with the results documented in a previous work. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A sensitivity-based approach for computing over-approximations of reachable sets, in the presence of constant parameter uncertainties and a single initial state, is used to analyze a three-link planar robot modeling a Powered Lower Limb Orthosis and its user. Given the nature of the mappings relating the state and parameters of the system with the inputs, and outputs describing the trajectories of its center of Mass, reachable sets for their respective spaces can be obtained relying on the sensitivities of the nonlinear closed-loop dynamics in the state space. These over-approximations are used to evaluate the worst-case performances of a finite time horizon linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) for controlling the ascending phase of the Sit-To-Stand movement.
