This paper presents an online adaptive optimal control algorithm based on policy iteration reinforcement learning techniques to solve the continuous-time Stackelberg games with infinite horizon for linear systems. This adaptive optimal control method finds in real-time approximations of the optimal value and the Stackelberg-equilibrium solution, while also guaranteeing closed-loop stability. The optimal-adaptive algorithm is implemented as a separate actor/critic parametric network approximator structure for every player, and involves simultaneous continuous-time adaptation of the actor/critic networks. Novel tuning algorithms are given for the actor/critic networks. The convergence to the closed-loop Stackelberg equilibrium is proven and stability of the system is also guaranteed. A simulation example shows the effectiveness of the new online algorithm.

We propose a new game theoretic approach to estimate a binary random variable based on a vector of sensor measurements that may be corrupted by an adversary. The problem is formulated as a zero-sum partial information game in which a detector attempts to minimize the probability of error and an attacker attempts to maximize this probability. Explicit mixed policies are computed using the matrix form of the game and exploiting sensor symmetry to reduce complexity and find closed-form solutions.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution using thermal states

We consider the security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution using thermal (or noisy) Gaussian resource states. Specifically, we analyze this against collective Gaussian attacks using direct and reverse reconciliation where both protocols use either homodyne or heterodyne detection. We show that in the case of direct reconciliation with heterodyne detection, an improved robustness to channel noise is achieved when large amounts of preparation noise is added, as compared to the case when no preparation noise is added. We also consider the theoretical limit of infinite preparation noise and show a secure key can still be achieved in this limit provided the channel noise is less than the preparation noise. Finally, we consider the security of quantum key distribution at various electromagnetic wavelengths and derive an upper bound related to an entanglement-breaking eavesdropping attack and discuss the feasibility of microwave quantum key distribution.

Research on public security, especially the safe manipulation and control of vehicles, has gained increasing attention in recent years. This study proposes a closed-loop drowsiness monitoring and management system that can estimate subjects’ driving performance. The system observes electroencephalographic (EEG) dynamics and behavioral changes, delivers arousing feedback to individuals experiencing momentary cognitive lapses, and assesses the efficacy of the feedback. Results of this study showed that the arousing feedback immediately improved subject performance, which was accompanied by concurrent theta- and alpha-power suppression in the bilateral occipital areas. This study further demonstrated the feasibility of accurately assessing the efficacy of arousing feedback presented to drowsy participants by monitoring the changes in their EEG power spectra.

Failures and uncertainties of current sensors are key issues in states and parameters estimation of Induction motors. In this paper, an EKF equipped with Output Augmented Fusion method (OAF) is used to design a new observer for dominance over these challenges. The proposed observer has the ability of speed estimation in a wide range with less sensitivity to parameters' variations and also failures and uncertainties of current sensors. An EKF is employed to estimate speed as a dynamic state variable over wide range of variation, using extension of states vector with equation of motion and other major parameters consisted of stator/rotor resistances and load torque. Moreover, using OAF algorithm, output matrices are extended to overcome failure probability and uncertainties of current sensors. The effectiveness of this approach is validated by simulation.

We study the problem of finding the minimum-length curvature constrained closed path through a set of regions in the plane. This problem is referred to as the Dubins Traveling Salesperson Problem with Neighborhoods (DTSPN). Two algorithms are presented that transform this infinite dimensional combinatorial optimization problem into a finite dimensional asymmetric TSP by sampling and applying the appropriate transformations, thus allowing the use of existing approximation algorithms. We show for the case of disjoint regions, the first algorithm needs only to sample each region once to produce a tour within a factor of the length of the optimal tour that is independent of the number of regions. We present a second algorithm that performs no worse than the best existing algorithm and can perform significantly better when the regions overlap. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) is a new mechanism of contrast generation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which differentiates molecule biomarkers via chemical shift. CEST MRI contrast mechanism is complex and depends on radio frequency (RF) pulses used in experimental conditions. To find the optimal RF pulse, numerical solutions of Bloch-McConnell equations may be used. The purpose of this work is to compare the effects of different RF pulses on the CEST phenomenon. First, a two-pool exchange model for CEST in MRI is used. Z-spectra and signal calculations for the two-pool model have been carried out for some RF pulses. Efficiency of both continuous and binomial RF pulses is investigated by calculating three parameters, namely: CEST image contrast, flip angle and specific absorption ratio (SAR). The contrast of CEST image is considered proportional to amount of saturation. As a binomial RF pulse, WALTZ-16* demonstrates a good efficiency, but generates some unwanted direct saturations. On the other hand, continuous RF pulses do not create any unwanted direct saturation, but have less efficiency.

We consider a game played between a hider, who hides a static object in one of several possible positions in a bounded planar region, and a searcher, who wishes to reach the object by querying sensors placed in the plane. The searcher is a mobile agent, and whenever it physically visits a sensor, the sensor returns a randomdirection, corresponding to a half-plane in which the hidden object is *** first present a novel search heuristic and characterize bounds on the expected distance covered before reaching the object. Next, we model this game as a large-dimensional zero-sum dynamic game and we apply a recently introduced randomized sampling technique that provides a probabilistic level of security to the hider. We observe that, when the randomized sampling approach is only allowed to select a very small number of samples, the cost of the heuristic is comparable to the security level provided by the randomized procedure. However, as we allow the number of samples to increase, the randomized procedure provides a higher probabilistic security level. © 2011 IFAC.

Achieving global asymptotic stabilization of rigid-body attitude is impossible using smooth feedback due to topological obstructions. In this paper, we propose a hybrid feedback that coordinates a "synergistic" family of potential functions and their natural feedbacks to achieve global asymptotic stability of a desired attitude with robustness to small perturbations including measurement noise. We illustrate the results via simulation. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.

Achieving global asymptotic stabilization of rigid-body attitude is impossible using smooth feedback;however, this obstruction can be overcome using a hybrid controller that coordinates a "synergistic" family of potential functions and their corresponding feedbacks. In this paper, we show that it is impossible to construct a synergistic family of potential functions from the widely used class of "modified trace functions," despite the fact that one can choose a subset of these functions whose only common critical point is the identity element. With this as motivation, we introduce a parametrized diffeomorphism that is capable of altering the critical behavior of potential functions and generating a synergistic family, paving the way for global asymptotic attitude stabilization of rigid-body attitude by hybrid feedback. © 2011 AACC American Automatic control Council.
