This paper investigates the parameter estimation problem for a type of nonlinear system with multiplicative component faults and model uncertainties. Multiplicative faults are parameter changes within a process. Model uncertainties can be treated as an unknown input by appropriate transformation. An adaptive observer is proposed to estimate the multiplicative faults which are affected by system states and inputs. The component faults triggering oscillatory failures are considered. The proposed design is applied to a hydraulic rig model to verify its effectiveness. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

Local Quantum Transformations Requiring Infinite Rounds of Classical Communication

In this Letter, we investigate the number of measurement and communication rounds needed to implement certain tasks by local quantum operations and classical communication (LOCC), a relatively unexplored topic. To demonstrate the possible strong dependence on the round number, we consider the problem of converting three-qubit entanglement into two-qubit form, specifically in the random distillation setting of [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 260501 (2007)]. We find that the number of LOCC rounds needed for a transformation can depend on the amount of entanglement distilled. In fact, for a wide range of transformations, the required number of rounds is infinite (unbounded). This represents the first concrete example of a task needing an infinite number of rounds to implement.

Randomly distilling W-class states into general configurations of two-party entanglement

In this article we obtain results for the task of converting a single N-qubit W-class state (of the form x0|00...0〉+x1|10...0〉+⋯+xN|00...1〉) into maximum entanglement shared between two random parties. Previous studies in random distillation have not considered how the particular choice of target pairs affects the transformation, and here we develop a strategy for distilling into general configurations of target pairs. We completely solve the problem of determining the optimal distillation probability for all three-qubit configurations and most four-qubit configurations when x0=0. Our proof involves deriving new entanglement monotones defined on the set of four-qubit W-class states. As an additional application of our results, we present new upper bounds for converting a generic W-class state into the standard W state |WN〉=1N(|10...0〉+⋯+|00...1〉).

This study investigates the interplay among heart rate variability (HRV), respiration, and the severity of motion sickness (MS) in a realistic passive driving task. Although HRV is a commonly used metrically in physiological research or even believed to be a direct measure of sympathovagal activities, the results of MS-effected HRV remain mixed across studies. The goal of this study is to find the source of these contradicting results of HRV associated with MS. Experimental results of this study showed that the group trend of the low-frequency (LF) component and the LF/HF ratio increased and high-frequency (HF) component decreased significantly as self-reported MS level increased (p<0.001), consistent with a perception-driven autonomic response of the cardiovascular system. However, in one of the subjects, the relationship was reversed when individuals intentionally adjust themselves (deep breathing) to relieve the discomfort of MS during the experiments. It appears that the correlations between HRV and MS level were higher when individuals made fewer adjustments (the number of deep breathing) during the passive driving experiments.

This work illustrates that DKI reveals white matter lesions and also discriminates healthy subjects from patientswith white matter lesions. To show this capability, we have investigated DKI images of a healthy subject and apatient with white matter lesions. The analysis was performed both between and within subjects. Regions of Interest (ROIs) for lesion and normal white matterin the patient images are selected manually (for within subject study) and also the corresponding ROIs in the healthy subject are defined (for between subject study). The results of comparing the estimated values for apparent diffusion and kurtosis parameters show that both D_(app) and K_(app) can distinguish normal and abnormal tissues. K_(app) (D_(app)) of the normal regions is greater (lower) than that ofthe abnormal regions. Another investigation over all voxels in the brain shows an important feature of kurtosis in determining white matter lesions.

Human life is divided into day periods as a main periods which consist of a day and night phase. Most of humans need to sleep a eight hours in a minimum to have their body and all the body function ready in day phase of a day. The second very important thing (instead of 8 hour sleep) is a phase of sleep in which a human is wake up. Waking up of a human in deep sleep phase lead to a very “unhappy” morning and not so nice spend of day. We are trying to develop algorithms to detect mild sleep stages which are the most suitable to human wake up. Actually we use microphone input to record and process sound near the monitored user. All the knowledge is implemented to mobile phone (windows mobile based device) as an intelligent alarm application. Whole application is designed as multithread Real-Time application based on. NET Compact Framework platform in C# language. Filtration and detection algorithms used special Math library Math. NET to process a recorded sound signal. This paper consists of several chapters which describes design, implementation and testing phases of this mobile application development. Actual testing results shows that our developed application detect correctly more than 70% of mild sleep stages of all tested persons.

This paper is concerned with semi-global stabilization of linear systems with actuator delay and energy constraints. Under the condition of null controllability by vanishing energy, the parametric Lyapunov equation based L2 low gain feedback is adopted to solve the problem. If the delay in the system is exactly known, a delay-dependent controller is designed and if the delay in the system is either time-varying or not exactly known, a delay-independent controller is established. The proposed approach is used in the linearized model of the relative motion in the orbit plane of a spacecraft with respect to another in a circular orbit around the Earth to validate its effectiveness. © 2011 IFAC.

In this paper, we propose a method to predict the outcome of Bevacizumab therapy on Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) tumors. The method uses diffusion anisotropy indices (DAI) and spatial information to predict the treatment response of each tumor voxel. These DAIs are Fractional Anisotropy, Mean Diffusivity, Relative Anisotropy, and Volume Ratio, extracted from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) data before treatment. The spatial information is considered as the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center, extracted from pre-treatment post-contrast T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (pc-T1-MRI). DAIs and spatial information of each tumor voxel are considered as feature vector. DTI and pc-T1-MRI are gathered before and after the treatment of seven GBM patients. First, DAIs of all brain voxels and the distance of each tumor voxel from the tumor center are calculated. Second, the method registers pre-treatment DAI maps and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI to pre-treatment pc-T1-MRI. Next, the tumor is segmented using thresholding technique from pc-T1-MRI. Then, Gd-enhanced voxels of the pre- and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI are compared to label the feature vectors. Three classifiers were evaluated, including Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Artificial Neural Network. Classification results show a preference for K-Nearest Neighbor based on well-established performance measures. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents modeling of the 500 kV transmission line located between Bang-Saphan 2 (BSP2) and Chom-Bung (CBG) substations, Thailand. The network is modeled based on the transient simulation program- PSCAD/EMTDC. The equivalent circuit of BSP2 and CBG is obtained from the actual parameters. The initial condition parameters are verified by PSS/E, an electrical simulation program. After the modeling has been established, a fault analysis is done by using PSCAD/EMTDC in order to study the system response when fault constrains are applied. This paper has illustrated that how the information on the sampled voltage and current waveforms derived from PSCAD/EMDTC modeling and simulation can be used for fault detection, classification and location.
