This paper presents an intelligent adaptive neurofuzzy inference system (ANFIS) based fuzzy Mamdani controller for a multifingered prosthetic hand. The objective of the controller is to move the finger joint angles along predetermined paths representing a grasping motion. The initiation of the grasping task is evaluated via EMG-entropy data, measured at the forearm of the prosthetic user. In addition to the motion control, the finger force is regulated with a Fuzzy logic controller. Simulation results indicate good performance of the proposed controller. Results show that the outputs follow the hand/finger force and given reference trajectory closely.

Drivers' distraction is widely recognized as a leading cause of car accidents. To investigate the distracting effect of dual-tasks involving driving and answering mathematical equations in the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) conditions, we design five different cases: two cases involving single-tasks and three cases involving dual-tasks. We have found that there is no statistically significant change in the behavioral data among the three dual-tasks. This raises an important question - is there any detectable effect of the dual tasks on the brain waves? To answer this, we use the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to recognize the changes, if any, in the Electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics associated with such dual-tasks. Our SOM analysis based on independent components corresponding to EEG signals extracted from Frontal and Motor areas revealed that single- and dual-tasks have distinguishable signatures in the EEG signals. Specifically, each of the two single-task conditions is clustered in a distinct spatial area of the map. Two of the dual-tasks also exhibit distinct spatial clusters, while the third case although shows differences from the other two, the neurons corresponding to this case are sub-clustered reflecting the fact that different subjects may give different priorities to the tasks when confronted with two tasks simultaneously. SOM-based exploratory analysis reveals the existence of distinct EEG signatures among the distracting and non-distracting tasks, although there is no any noticeable difference in the behavioral data among these cases.

In this paper, we derive the analytical impulse response of a fractional-order distributed parameter low-pass filter of the form integral from x=a to x=b of 1/Ts~(alpha)+1 dT, where 0 <= a <= b and alpha E (0,1). The asymptotic properties of the impulse responses are obtained. Moreover, based on the derived analytical impulse response, we present a technique to perform the discretization of the above fractional-order filter. Finally, a number of illustrated figures are presented to validate the concepts.

Many real natural or man-made dynamic systems can be better characterized using a fractional order dynamic model. Since in such a case the order assumes a non-integer value, it is of interest to consider the effect of small perturbation around the nominal value. It is of practical importance to analyze the influence of the order variations on the system behavior. This paper establishes an analytical method for the analysis of the sensitivity function of LTI fractional order dynamic systems with respect to the orders. The continuous dependent condition of the orders of fractional Green's function is derived, which is proved as a necessary and sufficient condition. The singularity of fractional Green's functions is discussed. Several examples are included for illustration.

This paper deals with a possibility of non-destructive diagnostics of solid objects by software analysis of vibration spectrum by accelerometers. By a use of MATLAB platform, a processing and information evaluation from accelerometer is possible. Accelerometer is placed on the measured object. The analog signal needs to be digitized by a special I/O device to be processed offline with FFT (Fast Fourier Transformation). The power spectrum is then examined by developed evaluating procedures.

Scientific computation faces multiple scalability challenges in trying to take advantage of the latest generation compute, network and graphics hardware. We present a comprehensive approach to solving four important scalability challenges: programming productivity, scalability to large numbers of processors, I/O bandwidth, and interactive visualization of large data. We describe a scenario where our integrated system is applied in the field of numerical relativity. A solver for the governing Einstein equations is generated and executed on a large computational cluster;the simulation output is distributed onto a distributed data server, and finally visualized using distributed visualization methods and high-speed networks. A demonstration of this system was awarded first place in the IEEE SCALE 2009 Challenge. © 2010 SCPE.

A mixture of feature extraction (FE) and a Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) based searching algorithm to search for similarity in satellite imagery is presented. The goal is to build an accurate and fast query-by-example using content based image retrieval based on the information extracted from satellite image data. We have investigated and described various feature extraction methods relevant to our work in this paper. The experimental results demonstrate satisfactory retrieval efficiency based on the proposed model. The results show the effectiveness of our approach.

This paper demonstrates the use of modified Locality Sensitive Hashing (mLSH) technique with Euclidean distance space to build a data structure for Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite imagery database that can be used to find similar satellite image matches in sublinear search time. Given the texture feature vectors of the images extracted using Gaussian central moments of wavelet edges after multi-resolution decomposition, a one-time linked-list hash table is created. A family of hash functions is drawn randomly and independently from a Gaussian distribution with mean zero and a standard deviation, d (i.e. dimensionality of the image feature vectors) to create the hash table. When tested, our algorithm has proved to be at least twenty times faster than the linear search algorithm. In addition, the algorithm ensures that the percentage of the entire database searched to find possible matches to any given query falls below ten percent.

This paper is concerned with stabilization of linear systems with arbitrarily large and bounded (time-varying) delay in the actuator. A new class of feedback laws based on poleassignment low gain design is proposed to solve the problem. Both delay-dependent and delay-independent results are presented and a series of sufficient conditions for guaranteeing the stability of the closed-loop system is presented. By using properties of this class of new feedback laws and the properties of some transcendental equations, exact zeros distribution of the closed-loop system is discussed. As a result, necessary and sufficient condition is given to guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system. All the conditions given in the paper are independent of the low gain parameter and are convenient to use in practice. Numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
