This is a brief survey of a little known field of disturbance estimation and subsequent cancellation, a field with a long history and is still rather disorganized. Researchers and results are scattered over almost two centuries, across East and West: from Jean-Victor Poncelet's Principle of Invariance in 1829, to Jingqing Han's conception of Active Disturbance Rejection in 1995 and beyond. But the field in recent years is maturing and coming into a focus with significant practical and theoretical implications abound. It provides a powerful alternative to the modern control paradigm in how real world control problems, of which disturbance rejection is a central theme, are viewed and solved. In this paper a reader will find a brief history of ideas, a new, unifying, problem formulation, and a summary of recent stability analysis results.

In this paper, a modern intelligent control based on computational model of mammalian limbic system and emotional processes (BELBIC) is presented for speed and flux control of induction motor simultaneously. In this work, a novel and simple model of induction motor drives control plant is achieved by using the intelligent control system, which controls motor speed and flux accurately, without needing to using any conventional controllers and also, quite independent of motor parameters. This generation of intelligent controllers that has high auto learning speed with simple structure shows excellent praxis for industrial scale utilization truly.

One of the important requirements for operational planning of electrical utilities is the prediction of hourly load up to several days, known as short term load forecasting (STLF). Considering the effect of its accuracy on system security and also economical aspects, there is an on-going attention toward putting new approaches to the task. Recently, neuro fuzzy modeling has played a successful role in various applications over nonlinear time series prediction. This paper presents a neuro-fuzzy model for the application of short-term load forecasting. This model is identified through locally liner model tree (LoLiMoT) learning algorithm. The model is compared to a multilayer perceptron and Kohonen classification and intervention analysis. The models are trained and assessed on load data extracted from EUNITE network competition.

Long-term forecasting of load demand is necessary for the correct operation of electric utilities. There is an on-going attention toward putting new approaches to the task. Recently, Neurofuzzy modeling has played a successful role in various applications over nonlinear time series prediction. This paper presents a neurofuzzy model for long-term load forecasting. This model is identified through Locally Linear Model Tree (LoLiMoT) learning algorithm. The model is compared to a multilayer perceptron and hierarchical hybrid neural model (HHNM). The models are trained and assessed on load data extracted from a North-American electric utility.

This paper presents a new method to solve unit commitment problem with operating constraints using a hybrid ant system/priority list method (HASP). The proposed methodology employs ant system in cooperating with the priority list method to find unit commitment solution as means of mutually combining the advantages of them in that a flexibility of the priority list method is reinforced, while AS algorithm can gain the benefit of using bias information for improving its performance during search process. The simulation results show that the proposed HASP is capable of obtaining satisfactory solution within reasonable computational time. Moreover, the proposed HASP can be extensively applied to handle the ramp rate limits and the operating reserve constraint, which are important for modern power system operation.

H∞ filter design for discrete delay systems: a new parameter-dependent approach

This article revisits the problem of H∞ filtering for discrete-time systems with a time-varying delay in the state and parameter uncertainties residing in a polytope. By utilising the polynomially parameter-dependent idea, a new filter design procedure is proposed, which formulates the existence of admissible robust H∞ filters into a set of linear matrix inequalities. These conditions are developed based on homogeneous polynomially parameter-dependent matrices of an arbitrary degree. As the degree grows, test of increasing precision is obtained providing less conservative filter designs. It is established that the results in the quadratic framework (that entail fixed matrices for the entire uncertainty domain), and the linearly parameter-dependent framework (that use linear convex combinations of matrices) are special cases of the proposed conditions for the zeroth degree and the first degree, respectively. Moreover, in addition to parameter dependence, the obtained conditions are also dependent on both the upper and lower bounds of the delay, which is obtained by using advanced techniques for achieving delay dependence. Several numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed filter design methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Implementation of distribution automation (DA) in electric power distribution systems can result in customer satisfaction with improved reliability, consistent quality and high-tech services. Loop restoration strategy (LRS) is a special DA method in the feeder level which is used by electric utilities to improve distribution system reliability. The effects of the implemented LRS on the reliability indices of a given distribution system mainly depend on its automatic control system (ACS). Selecting the type of ACS of LRS by electric utilities relies on the level of improvement required at load points and system oriented reliability indices. A step by step evaluation procedure is proposed in this paper to quantitatively assess the impacts of two common types of ACS of LRS on reliability indices of a distribution reliability test system.

This paper is concerned with the problem of H infin fuzzy filtering of nonlinear systems with intermittent measurements. The nonlinear plant is represented by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The measurements transmission from the plant to the filter is assumed to be imperfect, and a stochastic variable satisfying the Bernoulli random binary distribution is utilized to model the phenomenon of the missing measurements. Attention is focused on the design of an H infin filter such that the filter error system is stochastically stable and preserves a guaranteed H infin performance. A basis-dependent Lyapunov function approach is developed to design the H infin filter. By introducing some slack matrix variables, the coupling between the Lyapunov matrix and the system matrices is eliminated, which greatly facilitates the filter-design procedure. The developed theoretical results are in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, an illustrative example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper investigates the stability of switched linear systems with the perturbed switching. In premises of introducing the notions of common child-path and parent-path, we define distance between switching paths. A constructive procedure is proposed for finding common child-paths, then we reveal a relationship between common child-path and parent-path, and subsequently formulate the distance. Finally, distance between switching paths is extended to relative distance between switching signals, which is used to analyze the robustness for a class of switched linear systems.

Acquiring new customers in any business is much more expensive than trying to keep the existing ones. Thus many prediction models are presented to detect churning customers. The objective of this paper was to improve the predictive accuracy and interpretability of churn detection. For this purpose, the application of the locally linear model tree (LOLIMOT) algorithm, which integrates the advantage of neural networks, tree model and fuzzy modeling, was experimented. Applied to the data of a major telecommunication company, the method is found to improve prediction accuracy significantly compared to other algorithms, such as artificial neural networks, decision trees, and logistic regression. The results also indicate that LOLIMOT can have accurate outcome in extremely unbalanced datasets.
