IVUS-derived virtual histology (VH) permits the assessment of atherosclerotic plaque morphology by using radiofrequency analysis of ultrasound signals. However, it requires the acquisition to be ECG-gated, which is a major limitation of VH. Indeed, its computation can only be performed once per cardiac cycle, which significantly decreases the longitudinal resolution of VH. To overcome this limitation, the introduction of an image-based plaque characterization is of great importance. Current IVUS image processing techniques do not allow adequate identification of the coronary artery plaques. This can be improved by defining appropriate features for the different kinds of plaques. In this paper, a novel feature extraction method based on Run-length algorithm is presented and used for improving the automated characterization of the plaques within the IVUS images. The proposed feature extraction method is applied to 200 IVUS images obtained from five patients. As a result an accuracy rate of 77% was achieved. Comparing this to the accuracy rates of 75% and 71% obtained using co-occurrence and local binary pattern methods respectively indicates the superior performance of the proposed feature extraction method.

Optimization of quantum interferometric metrological sensors in the presence of photon loss

We optimize two-mode entangled number states of light in the presence of loss in order to maximize the extraction of the available phase information in an interferometer. Our approach optimizes over the entire available input Hilbert space with no constraints, other than fixed total initial photon number. We optimize to maximize the Fisher information, which is equivalent to minimizing the phase uncertainty. We find that in the limit of zero loss, the optimal state is the maximally path-entangled (so-called N00N) state, for small loss, the optimal state gradually deviates from the N00N state, and in the limit of large loss, the optimal state converges to a generalized two-mode coherent state, with a finite total number of photons. The results provide a general protocol for optimizing the performance of a quantum optical interferometer in the presence of photon loss, with applications to quantum imaging, metrology, sensing, and information processing.

This paper presents adaptive neural tracking control for a class of non-affine pure-feedback systems with multiple unknown state time-varying delays. The separation technique is introduced to decompose unknown functions of all time-varying delayed states into a series of continuous functions of each delayed state. A novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional is employed to compensate for the unknown function of current delayed state, which is effectively free from any restrictive assumption on unknown time-delay functions. The proposed control scheme guarantees the boundedness of all the signals in the closed-loop system and the tracking *** studies are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

This paper develops an integrated strategy for maintaining voltage stability for online applications. The proposed strategy employs real time data in the computation of a voltage stability index for voltage stability monitoring and control. The index chosen allows for the fast evaluation of the voltage stability margin for real-time assessment. A fast control operation based on fuzzy logic control is used to determine the VAr compensation required for the mitigation of occurrences of voltage instability.

In this paper, a model-predictive control based framework is proposed for modeling and optimization of the health state of power system equipment. In the framework, a predictive health model is proposed that predicts the health state of the equipment based on its usage and maintenance actions. Based on the health state, the failure rate of the equipment can be estimated. We propose to use this predictive health model to predict the effects of different maintenance actions. The effects of maintenance actions over a future time window are evaluated by a cost function. The maintenance actions are optimized using this cost function. The proposed framework is applied in the optimization of the loading of transformers based on the thermal degradation of the paper insulation.

Today due to the importance and necessity of implementing security systems in homes and other buildings, systems with higher certainty, lower cost and with sensor fusion methods are more attractive, as an applicable and high performance methods for the researchers. In this paper, the application of Dempster-Shafer evidential theory and also the newer, more general one Dezert-Smarandache theory for implementing as a home security system and also using sensor data fusion have been considered. The benefits of multisensor fusion with direct connection to the control unit, in comparison with the traditional single sensor systems, have been shown.

This paper studies some properties of the recently developed parametric Lyapunov equation based low gain feedback design method. As applications of these new properties, alternative and simpler solutions are proposed to the (global) stabilization problem for a class of linear systems with input delay and the semi-global stabilization problem when the systems are in addition subject to actuator saturation. Besides the simplicity in their construction, the new solutions can also be easily scheduled online to achieve global result in the presence of input saturation.

This paper deals with the concept of (integer-order) memristive systems, which are generalized to non-integer order case using fractional calculus. We consider the memory effect of the fractional inductor (fractductor), fractional capacitor and fractional memristor. We also show that the memory effect of such devices can be also used for an analogue implementation of the fractional-order operator, namely fractional-order integral and fractional-order derivatives. This kind of operator is useful for realization of the fractional-order controllers. We present theoretical description of such implementation and we proposed the practical realization and did some simulations and experimental measurements as well.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has complementary spatiotemporal resolution compared to Electroencephalography (EEG) as well as Magnetoencephalography (MEG). Thus, their integrated analysis should improve the overall resolution. To integrate analysis of E/MEG and fMRI, we extend our previously proposed integrated E/MEG and fMRI neural mass model to a multi-area model by defining two types of connections: the Short-Range Connections (SRCs) between minicolumns within the areas and Long-Range Connections (LRCs) between inter-areas minicolumns. The nonlinear input/output relationship in the proposed model is derived from the state space representation of the multi-area model. The E/MEG signals are originated from the overall synaptic activities of the pyramidal cells of all minicolumns and can be calculated using the lead field matrix (i.e., forward electromagnetic model). The fMRI signal is extracted from the proposed integrated model by calculating the overall neural activities in the areas and using it as the input of the extended balloon model (EBM). Using the simulation results, the capabilities of the proposed model to generate E/MEG and fMRI signals is shown. In addition, changes in the dynamics of the model to variations of its parameters were evaluated and lead us to the appropriate ranges for the parameters. In conclusion, this work proposes an effective method to integrate E/MEG and fMRI for the more effective use of these techniques in functional neuroimaging. © 2009 SPIE.

This paper focuses on the development and application of a Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) networks-based scheme for Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) in a U-tube Steam Generator (UTSG). First, a NF network is trained with data collected from a full scale UTSG simulator, and residuals are generated for fault detection. To identify the UTSG, a Locally Linear Neuro-Fuzzy (LLNF) model is used. This model is trained using the Locally Linear Model Tree (LOLIMOT) algorithm which is an incremental tree structure algorithm. Then, an evolutionary algorithm is used to train a Mamdani type NF network to classify the residuals. The residuals are analyzed by using this NF classifier for fault isolation purposes.
