The article provides information on a workshop on the development of imaging systems for cancer prevention and preemption convened by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Imaging Program held in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Doctor Katherine Ferrara of the University of California discussed the function of ultrasound in breast tumor imaging. Ways to close the gap between development and application of imaging approaches were tackled in a roundtable discussion on cervix and skin cancer.

The objective of this research is to determine a near optimal fuel efficient control strategy for an electric propulsion space vehicle to attain a predefined velocity at the target. The control strategy is represented as a chromosome and micro genetic algorithms are used to find the best solution. The control strategy uses me space vehicle's reverse thrust and the sling effect caused by the Sun. Copyright - World Automation Congress (WAC) 2006.

One of the main challenges of any related paradigms in systems engineering is being able to handle complex systems under unforeseen uncertainties. A system may be called complex if its dimension (order) is too high and its model (if available) is nonlinear, interconnected, and information on the system is so uncertain that classical techniques cannot easily handle the problem. A system of systems (SoS) is a "super system," or an integration of complex systems coordinated together in such a way as to achieve a wider set of goals with possible higher significance such as global warming, Mars missions, air traffic control, global earth observation system, etc. computational Intelligence or Soft Computing, a consortium of fuzzy logic (approximate reasoning), neuro-computing (learning), genetic algorithms and genetic programming (optimization), has proven to be a powerful set of tools for adding autonomy and semi-autonomy to many complex systems. For such systems the size of soft computing control architecture will be nearly infinite. In this presentation, paradigms using soft computing approaches are utilized to design autonomous controller with controller reuse for a number of space applications. The notion of adaptation in autonomous controller reuse can be handled via intelligent tools to add on additional capabilities in real-time scenarios. Learning from past experience is but one such scenario for the reuse of autonomous controllers. These applications include satellite array formations, robotic agents and the Virtual Laboratory (V-LAB®) for multi-physics modeling and simulation. A view of the future activities of the NASA JPL for space exploration will also be given. SoS concepts will be described and a few testbed cases will be introduced, including a robotic swarm with dynamic sensor networks for homeland security at UTSA ACE center. Some animated and experimental implementation movies will be shown.

In this paper, we propose an embedded multi-task scheduling system to make the wireless brain computer interface to real-time receive electroencephalogram signal more accurate. This method we propose also can increase the flexibility of the system. Base on the method, we can change the peripheral devices easily. And the tasks are taken as modules, so it also can increase the flexibility of system programs. The proposed system integrates electroencephalogram signal amplifier technique, wireless transmission technique, and embedded real-time system. The OMAP (Open Multimedia Architecture Platform) is used as a development platform and an embedded operating system is also used. © 2006 IEEE.

We propose a hybrid model for simulations of hybrid systems and we establish conditions on its data so that the asymptotically stable sets observed in simulations are continuous. The most important components of the hybrid model for simulations are a discrete integration scheme for the computation of the flows and an approximated jump mapping for the computation of the jumps. Our main result is built on the facts that, on compact hybrid time domains, every simulation to a hybrid system is arbitrarily close (in the graphical sense) to some solution to the actual hybrid system, and that asymptotically stable compact sets of hybrid systems are semiglobally practically asymptotically stable compact sets for the hybrid model for simulations. We present these results and illustrate them in simulations of the bouncing ball system

For hybrid closed-loop systems arising from hybrid control of nonlinear systems, we show that the sample-and-hold implementation of the hybrid controller preserves (semiglobally and practically) the stability properties of the closed-loop system. We provide a general model for the hybrid closed-loop system where the hybrid controller is implemented digitally and it is interfaced to the nonlinear system through sample and hold devices. We model the sample device and the digital controller/hold device as single asynchronous hybrid systems with independent timing constants and data. The main result is established by means of a Lyapunov function for the hybrid closed-loop system resulting from the interconnection of its hybrid and nonlinear subsystems

We give an elementary proof of the fact that, for continuous-time systems, it is impossible to use (even discontinuous) pure state feedback to achieve robust global asymptotic stabilization of a disconnected set of points or robust global regulation to a target while avoiding an obstacle. Indeed, we show that arbitrarily small, piecewise constant measurement noise can keep the trajectories away from the target. We give a constructive, Lyapunov-based hybrid state feedback that achieves robust regulation in the above mentioned settings

Artificial music composition is one of the ever rising problems of computer science. Genetic Algorithm has been one of the most useful means in our hands to solve optimization problems. By use of precise assumptions and adequate fitness function it is possible to change the music composing into an optimization problem. This paper proposes a new genetic algorithm for composing music. Considering entropy of the notes distribution as a factor of fitness function and developing mutation and crossover functions based on harmonic rules and trying to keep the melodies intact during these processes would result in a musical piece pleasant to human ears and interesting for human mind. This algorithm does not have the constraints of the previous algorithms. Restraining mutation and crossover functions with a goal of producing melodies based on acceptable melodies composed by humans, this algorithm is not bound to any genre, instrument or melody. The experimental results of this approach show that it is near to the human composing and the results produced from it are more acceptable than the ones produced by its predecessors.

Brain Emotional Learning Based Intelligent controller, BELBIC, has been used for model free adaptive control of several complex industrial plants. It has proven to be very effective controller with light computational load. The aim of this research is to present a general purpose toolbox implementing BELBIC as well as examples of its performance. The user can choose to utilize default configurations or to customize specific configuration to the given plant. © 2006 IEEE.

The problem of wireless spectrum sharing is investigated using a multi-server queueing system that models a group of channels and a multiplexed arrival process formed by a primary and secondary group of users. Motivated by under-utilized capacity in RF spectrum owned by the primary group, this work examines the impact of secondary user access patterns on blocking probabilities and achievable improvement in spectrum utilization with statistical multiplexing. The analytical framework presented allows estimation of the blocking for any renewal process characterization of secondary access times. In this work, Gamma distributed inter-access times are chosen to examine the impact of their index of dispersion (IDI) on the excess blocking probabilities of the Poisson distributed primary group. It is shown that by reducing the IDI value to be below unity, one can increase the secondary system utilization in the shared spectrum with minimal impact on the primary system. Combined with an increase in the number of excess channels available for secondary use, a feasible spectrum sharing paradigm can be proposed by shaping the access patterns of secondary systems
