GrasOpen: Biometric Authentication via Reach-and-Grasp for Smart Door Access Using Smartwatch

In the domain of smart devices, biometric identity authentication has become a leading and crucial technology, mainly because of its improved security and user convenience. Traditional methods frequently depend on complex activities, facial recognition, or passwords, which can be cumbersome and error-prone. This paper presents GrasOpen, an innovative biometric authentication system tailored for door-opening scenarios, utilizing the natural reach-and-grasp motion linked to door handles. The system employs smartwatches with accelerometers and gyroscopes to track and analyze arm movements, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience. GrasOpen tackles key challenges by leveraging the unique characteristics of the reach-and-grasp motion, eliminating the necessity for users to remember complex motions, and avoiding redundant actions like waiting for facial recognition. Specifically, GrasOpen initially proposes a lightweight model to discern door-opening actions from daily activities. Then, to realize the robust authentication system, GrasOpen integrates a complementary filter (CF) method to capture diversity-dependent features in door-opening actions. These features are subsequently processed through a modified ConvBoost model for precise user authentication. Experimental results reveal an impressive accuracy of 98.78% for activity recognition and 98.65% for identity authentication, highlighting GrasOpen’s excellence in function and performance. The system’s security and robustness are validated across diverse authentication environments. © 2014 IEEE.

Power electronic systems present a non-linear behavior mainly due to their switching nature. This is often combined with their interaction with non-linear systems, such as other switching converters, diode rectifiers, motor drives, etc. and with possible non linearities of the power grid in the case of grid connected systems. The major effect of these non-linear interactions is the generation of harmonic distortion on voltages and currents (both in DC and AC), which needs to be compensated to achieve high power quality systems. The use of passive filters is often the simplest and most immediate solution;however, this decreases converter efficiency and increases its weight and volume. Thus, the use of a control strategy capable of tracking periodic signals, rejecting periodic disturbance and largely improving steady state behavior and harmonic distortion with a limited bandwidth is a very desirable feature. Repetitive control (RC) represents an extremely practical and efficient solution for the aforementioned issues, and it is widely employed in many different applications. This paper focuses on state of the art of RC used in power electronics and drives. RC basic concepts, different control structures, design methods, fixed and variable frequency operating conditions, etc. are investigated. Furthermore, many example applications and existing control approaches developed in recent years for power electronics and drive systems based on RC, have also been discussed in detail. © 2020 IEEE.

Shortest Trajectory of a Dubins Vehicle with a controllable Laser

We formulate a novel planar motion planning problem for a Dubins-Laser system that consists of a Dubins vehicle with an attached controllable laser. The vehicle moves with unit speed and the laser, having a finite range, can rotate in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction with a bounded angular rate. From an arbitrary initial position and orientation, the objective is to steer the system so that a given static target is within the range of the laser and the laser is oriented at it in minimum time. We characterize multiple properties of the optimal trajectory and establish that the optimal trajectory for the Dubins-laser system is one out of a total of 16 candidates. Finally, we provide numerical insights that illustrate the properties characterized in this work. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Deep learning performance may decrease substantially with unseen heterogeneous data. While most unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods seek to address this through image alignment, they often ignore uncertainty style fluctuations within the target domain. When testing image styles vary in both direction and intensity, such models may fail to adapt. Furthermore, existing UDA methods tend to over-reliance on domain-level entire feature alignment, resulting in potentially over-exploiting semantic content-independent cues (e.g., intensity) as shortcut features. To address these limitations, this paper introduces an innovative and model-agnostic Causality-inspired Representation Learning Based on Target Style Imitation method for UDA. Specifically, we propose a novel Target Style Imitation (TSI) data augmentation approach to diversify the training data and align training and unseen target testing image styles. TSI constructs a Gaussian distribution for the target domain style and simulates unseen testing style variations through random sampling. Additionally, inspired by the stable and generalizable causal mechanism, we propose Causality-inspired Representation Learning (CRL) based on TSI method to enforce feature representations to adhere to causal properties (i.e., Separation and Independence) essential for robust UDA, thus fostering the model to focus on the domain-invariant semantic features. Our method surpasses state-of-the-art methods on two cross-modality medical image segmentation datasets. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Machine-learning-based detection for quantum hacking attacks on continuous-variable quantum-key-distribution systems

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) is a mature technology that can theoretically provide an unconditional security guarantee. However, a practical CVQKD system may be vulnerable to various quantum hacking attacks due to imperfect devices and insufficient assumptions. In this paper, we propose a universal defense strategy called a machine-learning-based attack detection scheme (MADS). Leveraging the combined advantages of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) and multiclass support vector machines (MCSVMs), MADS demonstrates remarkable effectiveness in detecting quantum hacking attacks. Specifically, we first establish a set of attack-related features to extract feature vectors. These vectors are then utilized as input data for DBSCAN to identify and remove any noise or outliers. Finally, the trained MCSVMs are employed to classify and predict the processed data. The predicted results can immediately determine whether or not to generate a final secret key. Simulation results show that the proposed MADS can efficiently detect most quantum hacking attacks and revise the overestimated secret key rates caused by a CVQKD system without any defense strategy to obtain a tighter security bound.

In data mining, frequent-pattern mining methods are used for handling binary databases. Utility mining addresses this limitation by considering the item utilities and quantities when discovering the high utility itemsets. In addition, to make these high utility patterns more human-explainable, we use the fuzzy-set theory to the utility mining algorithms. However, real-world databases are usually dynamic. That is, new transactions may be intermittently added, and the corresponding mined knowledge needs to be updated. This paper uses the famous incremental strategy, fast update (FUP), to modify high fuzzy utility itemsets from new coming data. We implement the FUP strategy on the Apriori-based approach for maintaining up-to-date high fuzzy utility *** also conducted experiments to demonstrate that the incremental algorithm significantly outperforms the Apriori-based batch mining method. © 2022 ACM.

For spacecraft attitude control affected by environmental disturbance, parameter uncertainty and actuator fault, a novel composite active fault-tolerant scheme, combining a strong tracking Cubature Kalman filter (STCKF) with adaptive prescribed performance control (APPC), is investigated in this paper. The proposed STCKF is capable of estimating lumped fault rapidly but accurately, and it is robust to model uncertainty. An adaptive finite-time prescribed performance function (APPF) whose boundaries can be flexibly adjusted in the case of actuator faults is proposed. Then an active fault tolerant controller is designed using nonsingular terminal sliding mode control (NTSMC) in conjunction with APPF. Simulation experiments and comparisons show that the proposed strategy exhibits better fault tolerance, lower conservatism and better steady-state performance.

Real-world scenarios are characterized by timing uncertainties, e.g., delays, and disturbances. Algorithms with temporal robustness are crucial in guaranteeing the successful execution of tasks and missions in such scenarios. We study time-robust path planning for synthesizing robots' trajectories that adhere to spatial-temporal specifications expressed in Sig-nal Temporal Logic (STL). In contrast to prior approaches that rely on discretized trajectories with fixed time-steps, we leverage Piece-Wise Linear (PWL) signals for the synthesis. PWL signals represent a trajectory through a sequence of time-stamped waypoints. This allows us to encode the STL formula into a Mixed-Integer Linear Program (MILP) with fewer variables. This reduction is more pronounced for specifications with a long planning horizon. To that end, we define time-robustness for PWL signals. Subsequently, we propose quantitative semantics for PWL signals according to the recursive syntax of STL and prove their soundness. We then propose an encoding strategy to transform our semantics into a MILP. Our simulations showcase the soundness and the performance of our algorithm.

The surge in smart device usage and the demand for high-throughput, low-latency mobile networks have accelerated the adoption of distributed smart applications and Collaborative Resource Management (CRM) techniques such as Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). With its ability to handle large data volumes, computational demands, scalability, and high energy consumption, MEC represents the next generation of Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), addressing key challenges in emerging smart applications. MEC supports real-time, high-throughput, and energy-efficient techniques like task offloading and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). However, as these techniques become more widespread, their diversity increases, leading to complexities that make them harder to understand and validate in different applications. This includes their use in areas like assistance for unmanned vehicles (UVs), autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high altitude platforms (HAPs), underwater unmanned vehicles (UUVs), satellite air-ground communication (SAGC), and other emerging systems that rely on Collaborative Resource Management (CRM). Although a number of review articles pertaining to MEC systems exist, we analyzed techniques beyond task offloading that explore MEC system applicability in diverse domains, including UUVs, vehicular edge computing, Re-configurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), Massive MIMO, autonomous driving, HAPs, and SAGC. From the perspective of these optimization techniques, this article highlights their role in shaping MEC’s evolution, focusing on parameters such as real-time response, energy efficiency, and other critical factors in task offloading processes. We also explored the role of Standard Development Organizations (SDOs), such as ETSI and IEEE, in advancing MEC systems.
