$H_{\bm \infty}$ Fuzzy Filtering of Nonlinear Systems With Intermittent Measurements

This paper is concerned with the problem of H infin fuzzy filtering of nonlinear systems with intermittent measurements. The nonlinear plant is represented by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The measurements transmission from the plant to the filter is assumed to be imperfect, and a stochastic variable satisfying the Bernoulli random binary distribution is utilized to model the phenomenon of the missing measurements. Attention is focused on the design of an H infin filter such that the filter error system is stochastically stable and preserves a guaranteed H infin performance. A basis-dependent Lyapunov function approach is developed to design the H infin filter. By introducing some slack matrix variables, the coupling between the Lyapunov matrix and the system matrices is eliminated, which greatly facilitates the filter-design procedure. The developed theoretical results are in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, an illustrative example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Acquiring new customers in any business is much more expensive than trying to keep the existing ones. Thus many prediction models are presented to detect churning customers. The objective of this paper was to improve the predictive accuracy and interpretability of churn detection. For this purpose, the application of the locally linear model tree (LOLIMOT) algorithm, which integrates the advantage of neural networks, tree model and fuzzy modeling, was experimented. Applied to the data of a major telecommunication company, the method is found to improve prediction accuracy significantly compared to other algorithms, such as artificial neural networks, decision trees, and logistic regression. The results also indicate that LOLIMOT can have accurate outcome in extremely unbalanced datasets.

This technical note studies some properties of the recently developed parametric Lyapunov equation based low gain feedback design method. As applications of these new properties, alternative and simpler solutions are proposed to the (global) stabilization problem for a class of linear systems with input delay and the semi-global stabilization problem when the systems are in addition subject to actuator saturation. Besides the simplicity in their construction, the new solutions can also be easily scheduled online to achieve global result in the presence of input saturation.

Rapid automatic segmentation and visualization of teeth in CT-scan data

In this study, a fast automatic method is proposed for the segmentation and visualization of teeth in multi-slice CT-scan data of the head. The algorithm consists of five main procedures. In the first part, the mandible and maxilla are separated using maximum intensity projection in the y direction and a step like region separation algorithm. In the second part, the dental region is separated using maximum intensity projection in the z direction, thresholding and cropping. In the third part, the teeth are rapidly segmented using a region growing algorithm based on four thresholds which are used to distinguish between seed points, teeth and none teeth tissue. In the fourth part, the results are visualized using iso-surface extraction and surface and volume rendering. A semi-automatic method is also proposed for rapid metal artifact removal. Results on multiple dadasets have shown the success of the algorithm with the dental region separation and segmentation procedure taking an average of only 2.4 sec to complete for each jaw making it at least tens of times faster than any previously proposed method. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Fully automatic extraction of panoramic dental images from CT-scan volumetric data of the head

In this study, a fully automatic technique is proposed for the extraction of panoramic dental images from CT-scan images of the teeth. The process is performed in three steps: Mandibular region isolation, mandibular curve creation and panoramic image extraction. First the mandibular region is isolated. To do this the maxilla and mandible are separated from each other by finding the slice separating them. Then an image of the maximum intensity projection of the slices containing the mandible is obtained. The projection of the mandible is then isolated from the other bones. Using the isolated mandible region an initial curve is created. Nine control points are then selected on the curve. These control points are used to create a fine curve using cubic splines. The formula for each spline segment is used to find the perpendicular lines to the spline on each point on the spline. These perpendicular lines are then used in all slices (mandible and maxilla) to create the panoramic images. The algorithm has many advantages over earlier methods. Results using multiple datasets have shown that the algorithm is robust. © 2009 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

With the increasing application of distributed energy resources and information technologies in the electricity infrastructure, innovative possibilities for incorporating the demand side more actively in power system operation are enabled. At the residential level energy costs could be reduced with intelligent price-based control concepts (demand response). A promising, controllable, residential distributed generation technology is micro cogeneration (micro-CHP). Micro-CHP is an energy efficient technology that simultaneously provides heat and electricity to households during operation. This paper presents a detailed model of a household using a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) micro- CHP system in conjunction with heat storage options to fulfil its heat and part of its electricity demand. Furthermore, a decentralised controller based on a model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed. MPC can take benefit of future knowledge on prizes and energy demands and can therefore lead to better system performance. In simulations the performance of the MPC-controlled PEMFC system is illustrated under different conditions regarding energy pricing, domestic energy demand, and system configuration. © 2009 IEEE.

Color image histograms are very useful tools for content based image retrieval (CBIR) that can be applied on features such as colour, texture and shape. As these kinds of histograms results with large variations between neighbouring bins, they seem so sensitive to any kind of changes such as noise, illumination. To overcome this problem, in this paper, fuzzy linking histogram approach based on OWA aggregation operator is proposed, which is capable of projecting 3-dimensional (L*a*b*) colour histograms into single-dimension. The proposed method have been evaluated and compared with five other related methods in retrieving similar images from the common dataset which is available on http://***/~konkonst. The experimental results on 100 images within two categories of Cat and Sky reveals better performance of the proposed method in comparison with the other mentioned methods.

Low gain feedback has found several applications in constrained control, robust control and nonlinear *** gain feedback refers to a family of stabilizing state feedback gains that are parameterized in a scalar and go to zero as the scalar decreases to *** peaking, the peak value of the state of the closed-loop system increasing towards infinity as the time goes to infinity and the value of the low gain parameter decreases to zero, is a prominent phenomenon resulting from low gain *** success of low gain feedback design lies in the fact that such slow peaking gets canceled when the state is multiplied by the feedback gain to obtain the control *** this paper, we generalize the existing low gain design methods by introducing the notion of L -vanishment and providing a full characterization of low gain feedback that achieves such an L -vanishment property.A time domain signal parameterized by a scalar ε possesses the L -vanishment property if its L norm approaches zero as ε *** notion of L -vanishment not only facilitates the description of low gain feedback and the resulting slow peaking phenomenon, but also allows us to establish a systematic approach to the design of low gain feedback.A salient feature of this new design approach is that it results in all possible low gain feedback laws, including those resulting from the existing design methods.

Loss of alertness can have dire consequences for people controlling motorized equipment or for people in professions such as defense. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is known to be related to alertness of the person, but due to high level of noise and low signal strength, the use of EEG for such applications has been considered to be unreliable. This study reports the fractal analysis of EEG and identifies the use of maximum fractal length (MFL) as a feature that is inversely correlated with the alertness of the subject. The results show that MFL (of only single channel of EEG) indicates the loss of alertness of the individual with mean (inverse) correlation coefficient = 3D 0.82.

Bioprocesses which are involved in producing different pharmaceutical products may conveniently be classified according to the mode chosen for the process: cither batch, fed-batch or continuous. From the control engineer's viewpoint they are fed-batch processes, which present the greatest challenge to get a pure product with a high concentration. Complicated dynamics, nonline-arity and non-stationarity make controlling them a very delicate task. pH control of bioreactors has been an interesting problem from both implementation and controller design points of view. This is particularly true if the complex microbial interactions yield significant nonlinear behavior. When this occurs, conventional control strategies may not succeed and more advanced strategies need to be suggested. This paper discusses model predictive control (MPC) based on a detailed unstructured model for penicillin production in a fed-batch fermentor. The approach used here is to use quadratic cost function for pH regulation, while taking into account control signal fluctuations in the optimization block. The result of applying the obtained controller and also its sensitivity to disturbance have been displayed and compared with the results of an auto-tuned PID controller used in previous works. The merit of this method is its low computational cost of solving the optimization problem, while leading to a closed form controller as well.
