In this paper, we consider an urban ISR scenario where a human operator is tasked to provide feedback regarding the nature of some objects of interest. The feedback is relayed to the stochastic controller of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which must determine an appropriate mission plan. A small (unmanned) aerial vehicle (SAV) loiters at a high altitude where it may survey a large territory. An operator decides which objects in the SAV's field of view are of interest and which are not. Then a team of micro (unmanned) aerial vehicles (MAVs) is assigned individual tours to inspect the objects of interest at a low altitude. As a MAV flies over an object of interest, the operator must decide if the object has a feature that uniquely distinguishes it as a target. The key parameters are the operator's response and the time taken for the operator to respond. The controller uses these parameters to compute the expected information gain of a revisit. In previous studies automatic target recognition (ATR) was used for making some decisions in the SAV and the MAVs. This paper investigates the use of human feedback alone for target recognition. Different methods for calculating expected information gain are examined and compared. In addition, results from a flight test of this controller are presented.

The locational marginal prices (LMPs) for real and reactive power is calculated with the framework of full AC optimal power flow (OPF). The production cost of reactive power from various generation sources including generators and reactive compensators was integrated in the objective function with operation constraints. Interior point method combined branch and bound was employed to solve the OPF problem with discrete variables. The decomposition of LMP into three components of energy reference, network loss and congestion are computed. The calculation of LMP for real and reactive power at each bus was tested using an IEEE 30-bus system model.

A New Parameter-dependent Approach to Discrete-time Robust H 2 Filtering

This paper revisits the problem of robust H 2 filtering for discrete-time systems with parameter uncertainties. Given a stable system with parameter uncertainties residing in a polytope with s vertices, the focus is on designing a robust filter such that the filtering error system is robustly asymptotically stable and has a guaranteed estimation error variance for the entire uncertainty domain. A new polynomial parameter-dependent idea is introduced to solve the robust H 2 filtering problem, which is different from the quadratic framework that entails fixed matrices for the entire uncertainty domain, or the linearly parameter-dependent framework that uses linear convex combinations of s matrices. This idea is realized by carefully selecting the structure of the matrices involved in the products with system matrices. A linear matrix inequality (LMI) condition is obtained for the existence of admissible filters, and based on this, the filter design is cast into a convex optimization problem, which can be readily solved via standard numerical software. The merit of the proposed method lies in its less conservativeness than the existing robust filter design methods, as illustrated via a numerical example.

The ability to inject dopant atoms with high spatial resolution, flexibility in dopant species, and high single ion detection fidelity opens opportunities for the study of dopant fluctuation effects and the development of devices in which function is based on the manipulation of quantum states in single atoms, such as proposed quantum computers. The authors describe a single atom injector, in which the imaging and alignment capabilities of a scanning force microscope (SFM) are integrated with ion beams from a series of ion sources and with sensitive detection of current transients induced by incident ions. Ion beams are collimated by a small hole in the SFM tip and current changes induced by single ion impacts in transistor channels enable reliable detection of single ion hits. They discuss resolution limiting factors in ion placement and processing and paths to single atom (and color center) array formation for systematic testing of quantum computer architectures in silicon and diamond. © 2008 American Vacuum Society.

A novel reduced reference (RR) method of channel estimation for image transmission through lossy channels is presented. Estimation is based on the amount of distortion the low frequency content of the image or its histogram suffers during transmission. This distortion is computed by sending the low frequency content of the original image or the corresponding histogram to the receiver by means of a robust watermark. Simulations for different types of images and different channel losses yield large amounts of correlation between the estimated Mean Square Error (MSE) and the structural similarity (SSIM) index.

Singular systems have been the subject of interest over the last two decades due to their many practical applications. But it has to be said that system identification of such system is still a challenging area because of the difficulty of identification of such systems for their complex structures. In addition, it seems that by developing a useful method for identification of singular system, one can use the useful property of such systems in describing the natural complex phenomena. This paper presents a novel methodology for identifying nonlinear singular systems from empirical data. Singular systems are idealized models for systems with slow and quick modes of change. However, their identification is a challenging problem even for the linear case. A new learning method, generalized locally linear model tree (GLoLiMoT) algorithm is introduced. The contribution of this paper is to provide a method for adjusting the parameters of fuzzy descriptor model, e.g. the splitting ratio and the standard deviation, the number of locally linear neurons or the number of linear singular systems for the consequent part in fuzzy descriptor model as well as the order of the singular system. By these modifications an accurate model of nonlinear singular system is obtained which is compared with several other methods in two case studies. Results depict the power of the proposed approach in describing nonlinear complex phenomena.

Understanding the primatespsila visual system has been one of the challenging problems of different groups of scientists for years. Though many studies, from physiology and neuroscience to computer vision, are done on different aspects of visual processing in the cortex, a comprehensive computational model of visual cortex is still missing. We have implemented a computational model of object recognition in ventral visual pathway in our previous work. This hierarchical model covers visual areas V1/V2, V4/PIT, and AIT sending inputs to the Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) for categorization. To extend our model, in this work, we have added a simple model of motion detection in neurons of areas V1 and MT of the dorsal stream to our previous model. This has enabled the model to perform another principal function of the visual cortex, i.e., motion perception.

A Parametric Lyapunov Equation Approach to Low Gain Feedback Design for Discrete-time Systems

Low gain feedback, a parameterized family of stabilizing state feedback gains whose magnitudes approach zero as the parameter decreases to zero, has found several applications in constrained control systems, robust control and nonlinear control. In the continuous-time setting, there are currently three ways of constructing low gain feedback laws the eigenstructure assignment approach, the parametric ARE based approach and the parametric Lyapunov equation based approach. The eigenstructure assignment approach leads to feedback gains explicitly parameterized in the low gain parameter. The parametric ARE based approach results in a Lyapunov function along with the feedback gain, but requires the solution of an ARE for each value of the parameter. The parametric Lyapunov equation based approach possesses the advantages of the first two approaches and results both an explicitly parameterized feedback gains and a Lyapunov function. The first two approaches have been extended to discrete-time setting. This paper develops the parametric Lyapunov equation based approach to low gain feedback design for discrete-time systems.

In noncooperative Iris recognition one should deal with uncontrolled behavior of the subject as well as uncontrolled lighting conditions. That means imperfect focus, contrast, brightness, and orientation among the others. To cope with this situation we propose to take iris images at both near infrared (NIR) and visible light (VL) and use them simultaneously for recognition. In this paper, a novel approach for iris recognition is proposed so that extracted features of NIR and VL images are fused to improve the recognition rate. When the images do not have enough quality due to focus, contrast, etc., effects of feature fusion is more pronounced. This is the situation in UTIRIS database, which is used in our experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed approach, especially in small training samples, leads to a remarkable improvement on recognition rate compared with either NIR or VL recognition.

We propose a constrained, three-dimensional, nonparametric, entropy-based, coupled, multi-shape approach to segment subcortical brain structures from magnetic resonance images (MRI). The proposed method uses PCA to develop shape models that capture structural variability. It integrates geometrical relationship between different structures into the algorithm by coupling them (limiting their independent deformations). On the other hand, to allow variations among coupled structures, it registers each structure separately when building the shape models. It defines an entropy-based energy function, which is minimized using quasi-Newton algorithm. To this end, probability density functions (pdf) are estimated iteratively using nonparametric Parzen window method. In the optimization algorithm, constraints are used to improve segmentation quality. These constraints are extracted from training data. Sample results are given for the segmentation of caudate, hippocampus, and putamen, illustrating highly superior performance of the proposed method compared to the most similar methods in the literature.
