In clinical problems, numerous factors are usually involved in a medical syndrome. New advances in medicine provide a broad range of diagnosis methods to cover all aspects of a disease. However, huge amounts of raw information may confuse clinicians and decrease decision accuracy. computerized knowledge extraction is an active area of research in medical informatics. This paper suggests a new medical data mining approach using an advanced swarm intelligence data mining algorithm. Considering medical knowledge discovery difficulties, this approach addresses common issues such as missing value management and interactive rule extraction. Here, surgery candidate selection in temporal lobe epilepsy is the main target application. However, the general idea can be applied to other medical knowledge discovery problems. Experimental results show noticeable performance improvement in the final rule-set quality while the method is flexible and fast.

We state results on the existence of smooth Lyapunov functions for hybrid systems whose solutions satisfy a class-K script L sign script L sign estimate with respect to two measures. The class-K script L sign script L sign estimate, a natural extension of class-K script L sign estimate, is in terms of the elapsed time and the number of jumps that have occurred. The main result is that a smooth Lyapunov function exists if and only if the class-K script L sign script L sign estimate is robust. In turn, sufficient conditions for robustness are given. Special cases include systems with compact attractors. Most of the results parallel, and unify, what has been developed previously for differential inclusions and difference inclusions. © 2005 AACC.

The authors created a Web-based integrated education support system that unified the data in the administrative system and the education system in a university. The purpose of the system was to make the administrative system and education system data that had previously been separated seamless, and to implement seamless access from inside and outside the university while maintaining security. Moreover, the authors emphasized the development of a portal site as a point of contact for the system. As a result of using software packages and existing technology for the other servers and databases, and making a policy of not changing the administrative system at all, the authors were able to create the system in a short period of 5 months. After the system was operational, preparation and review for class could be done at home, and evaluations of reports and final determinations of grades could be done from outside the university. This confirmed that the education system was effective. Finally, the authors looked at the trouble and performance problems that occurred involving local rules in the business department during operation, as well as countermeasures for them. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Decoy-state quantum key distribution with two-way classical postprocessing

Decoy states have recently been proposed as a useful method for substantially improving the performance of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols when a coherent-state source is used. Previously, data postprocessing schemes based on one-way classical communications were considered for use with decoy states. In this paper, we develop two data postprocessing schemes for the decoy-state method using two-way classical communications. Our numerical simulation (using parameters from a specific QKD experiment as an example) results show that our scheme is able to extend the maximal secure distance from 142km (using only one-way classical communications with decoy states) to 181km. The second scheme is able to achieve a 10% greater key generation rate in the whole regime of distances. We conclude that decoy-state QKD with two-way classical postprocessing is of practical interest.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) analysis has been widely adopted for the monitoring of cognitive state changes and sleep stages because abundant information in EEG recording reflects changes in drowsiness, arousal, sleep, and attention, etc. In this study, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based silicon spiked electrode array, namely dry electrodes, are fabricated and characterized to bring EEG monitoring to the operational workplaces without requiring conductive paste or scalp preparation. An isotropic/anisotropic reactive ion etching with inductive coupled plasma (RIE-ICP) micromachining fabrication process was developed to manufacture the needle-like micro probes to pierce the stratum corneum of skin and obtain superior electrically conducting characteristics. This article reports a series of prosperity testing and evaluations of continuous EEG recordings. Our results suggest that the dry electrodes have advantages in electrode-skin interface impedance, signal intensity and size over the conventional (wet) electrodes. In addition, we also developed an EEG-based drowsiness estimation system that consists of the dry-electrode array, power spectrum estimation, Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based EEG signal analysis, and multivariate linear regression to estimate driver's drowsiness level in a virtual-reality-based dynamic driving simulator to demonstrate the potential applications of the MEMS electrodes in operational environments.

This paper is concerned with the derivation of the kinematics model of the University of Tehran-Pole Climbing Robot (UT-PCR). As the first step, an appropriate set of coordinates is selected and used to describe the state of the robot. Nonholonomic constraints imposed by the wheels are then expressed as a set of differential equations. By describing these equations in terms of the state of the robot an underactuated driftless nonlinear control system with affine inputs that governs the motion of the robot is derived. A set of experimental results are also given to show the capability of the UT-PCR in climbing a stepped pole. ©2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a new pedestrian detection algorithm, and use it to develop a real-time pedestrian detection system. The pedestrian detection algorithm can be functionally partitioned into two parts: moving object segmentation and pedestrian recognition. In moving object segmentation, we segment the moving objects in the scene by modified temporal differencing method. This method combines general temporal differencing method with detection nets. In pedestrian recognition, we obtain multi-type wavelet templates from input images. Interest points are extracted from wavelet templates. Then, feature points are extracted by statistical method from interest point templates. Finally, these feature points are fed into a trained multilayer back-propagation neural network. The output of the neural network implies the result - pedestrian or non-pedestrian. From experiments, accuracy rate of recognition achieves 95%. We implement this algorithm in a real-time pedestrian detection system. The system can detect pedestrians in the scene in real time. The pedestrian detection rate is 92.58%. © 2005 TFSA.

This work examines the blocking performance of narrowband (NB) and wideband (WB) sources that access a shared pool of wireless channels. The NB sources utilize a single channel, whereas WB sources access simultaneously a larger group of channels. This system is analyzed in the context of maximizing the utilization of spectrum that is allocated to the WB system by allowing NB sources random access to the same spectrum. The performance measure to be controlled is the blocking experienced by WB sources. A queueing model of this system is proposed that allows evaluation of the impact of NB sources on WB performance. Assuming Poisson arrival process models and negative exponential distributions for the channel holding times, the dependence of the blocking probability of the WB source is derived as a function of the NB utilization factor. In an uncontrolled NB access scheme, the WB blocking is lower bounded by the blocking probability experienced by NB sources. The performance improvement afforded by adding extra NB channels and by controlling the access rates of the NB source for finite population WB sources is presented. The analysis presented here provides an assessment of some of the emerging paradigms for adaptive spectrum allocation. Of particular interest are the criteria under which spectrum agile, cognitive and software radios functioning in an opportunistic fashion can access unused spectrum allocated to a primary system without adversely affecting the performance of the primary system.

The paper elaborates the design of an optimal feedback control system for a washing machine. It is sought to save on the water and energy consumption and the associated wear and tear and detergent consumption through monitoring the washing process via feedback sensors rather than following a fixed cycle. A lumped nonlinear model is first fitted to empirical data. After choosing an appropriate objective function, the optimal control law is found via approximate solution of Hamiltonian-Jacobi-Bellman (H-J-B) equation. The results show the high performance of proposed controller. © 2005 IEEE.

Intelligent control of home appliances, have in recent years, attracted much theoretical attention, as well as becoming a major factor for industrial and economic success and rapid market penetration. Washing machines represent an important market. Intelligent control techniques are capable of providing useful means for both easier use and energy and water conservation. In this paper, we use two techniques that we have successfully used in other intelligent modeling and control applications. Firstly, we use a neurofuzzy locally linear model system for data driven modeling of the machine. Secondly, we use a neural computing technique, based on a mathematical model of amygdala and the limbic system, for emotional control of the washing machine. The obtained results indicate the applicability of the proposed techniques in this important business sector. © 2005 IEEE.
