The unique characteristic of a repetitive process is a series of sweeps or passes through a set of dynamics defined over a finite duration known as the pass length. At the end of each pass, the process is reset and the next time through the output, or pass profile, produced on the previous pass acts as a forcing function on, an hence contributes to, the dynamics of the new pass profile. They are hence a class of systems with information propagation in two independent directions where here the dynamics over the finite pass length are described by a matrix linear differential equation and that from pass to pass has a discrete updating structure. This means that filtering/estimation theory/algorithms for, in particular, 2D discrete linear systems is not applicable. In this paper we solve a general filtering problem with a view toward use in the many applications where such action will be required.

Iris recognition for partially occluded images: Methodology and sensitivity analysis

Accurate iris detection is a crucial part of an iris recognition system. One of the main issues in iris segmentation is coping with occlusion that happens due to eyelids and eyelashes. In the literature, some various methods have been suggested to solve the occlusion problem. In this paper, two different segmentations of iris are presented. In the first algorithm, a circle is located around the pupil with an appropriate diameter. The iris area encircled by the circular boundary is used for recognition purposes then. In the second method, again a circle is located around the pupil with a larger diameter. This time, however, only the lower part of the encircled iris area is utilized for individual recognition. Wavelet-based texture features are used in the process. Hamming and harmonic mean distance classifiers are exploited as a mixed classifier in suggested algorithm. It is observed that relying on a smaller but more reliable part of the iris, though reducing the net amount of information, improves the overall performance. Experimental results on CASIA database show that our method has a promising performance with an accuracy of99.31. The sensitivity of the proposed method is analyzed versus contrast, illumination, and noise as well, where lower sensitivity to all factors is observed when the lower half of the iris is used for recognition. We propose a 3D nonparametric, entropy-based, coupled, multishape approach for the segmentation of subcortical brain structures in magnetic resonance images (MRI). Our method uses PCA to capture structures variability. Because of complex relationships of pose and shape of the coupled structures, we only use their shape and size relation. To this end, we apply separate registrations of the structures. For each structure, we consider a similarity transform using seven parameters. In addition, to generate most accurate results, we estimate probability density functions (pdf) iteratively. The proposed method minimizes an entropy-based energy function using quasi-Newton algorithm. To improve the results, we use analytical derivatives. Sample results are given for the segmentation of putamen, thalamus and caudate illustrating the impact of coupling on the accuracy of the results.

This paper considers the general filtering problem for a distinct class of two-dimensional (2-D) discrete linear systems, i.e. information propagation in two independent directions, known as discrete linear repetitive processes which are of both system-theoretic and applications interest. In particular, new results on the design of filters with guaranteed levels of performance are developed. These take the form of algorithms for the design of an H infin and l 2 -l infin dynamic output feedback filter which guarantees that the resulting filtering error process is stable and has prescribed disturbance attenuation performance as measured by H infin and l 2 -l infin norms.

The switched reluctance motor (SRM) and drive system is a candidate in various applications including the home appliance. The simple and low cost system with an adequate performance is also one topic to be developed. A speed sensor directly increases the cost and it directly influences the reliability of the system. This paper proposes a simplified variable speed control system for the SRM without using an encoder. The method is not based on the exact rotor position estimation, only the turn off angle is determined from the simple relation between measured terminal voltage and current. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the experimental result on the 3 kW 3-phase 6-stator-pole and 4-rotor-pole SRM.

Single-photon quantum key distribution in the presence of loss

We investigate two-way and one-way single-photon quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols in the presence of loss introduced by the quantum channel. Our analysis is based on a simple precondition for secure QKD in each case. In particular, the legitimate users need to prove that there exists no separable state (in the case of two-way QKD), or that there exists no quantum state having a symmetric extension (one-way QKD), that is compatible with the available measurements results. We show that both criteria can be formulated as a convex optimization problem known as a semidefinite program, which can be efficiently solved. Moreover, we prove that the solution to the dual optimization corresponds to the evaluation of an optimal witness operator that belongs to the minimal verification set of them for the given two-way (or one-way) QKD protocol. A positive expectation value of this optimal witness operator states that no secret key can be distilled from the available measurements results. We apply such analysis to several well-known single-photon QKD protocols under losses.

Design, simulation, and optimization of a novel (extremely) broad-band coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed on-chip antenna using Genetic Algorithm (GA) will be presented. The antenna is of slot type and has the shape of a bow-tie with rounded truncation. It is designed on quartz coated silicon substrate and fed with 50 ohms CPW transmission line. Return loss of the antenna is less than -10 dB for most of the frequency range of 5-60 GHz. © 2006 Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. All rights reserved.

Several path-planning algorithms for mobile robots have been introduced. Proper architectures for mobile robots to implement the path-planning algorithms are also of interest. If the mobile robots are to perform complicated tasks including complex sensing and planning operations and have accepted performance, must be autonomous: capable of acquiring information and performing tasks without programmatic intervention. In this paper we employ a layered architecture for mobile robots to perform our previously introduced cellular automata based path planning technique. It employs an abstraction approach which makes the complexity manageable. The architecture has an important feature which is its internal artifacts;it has some beliefs about the world and these beliefs are represented in artifacts and most actions are planned and performed with respect to these artifacts © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, a new approach to enlarge the domain of attraction of a nonlinear affine system based on Zubov Theorem is suggested. The affine systems which are studied in this paper some times have some constraints that coping with them are difficult. The proposed approach may alleviate these difficulties by introducing an extended controller design methodology. The controller can extend the domain of attraction as an n-dimensional ellipsoid in a way that the diameters of ellipsoid, may be used as the tuning factors for shaping and enlarging it as much as possible. In this approach, the ratios of diameters are not crucial. In other words, it is possible to stretch the domain of attraction along some directions and compress it along the others. The simulation results on the Van der Pole system and two case studies, namely, a vehicle dynamics and an inverted pendulum show the efficiency of the method. ©2006 IEEE.

Lack of sufficient flexibility to deal with actual noisy data in data fusion methods is the main concern in this paper. This deficiency comes from two major reasons. Firstly, infusion methods, all of the collected data are considered useful. Secondly, often some presumed sensor models are used in the fusion process, which do not necessarily match to the true models. As a general solution to address the aforementioned shortcomings, a novel Adaptive Data Fusion Structure (ADFS) is proposed. In ADFS, incorrect data are eliminated;then the remainders are fused, and finally the sensor models are learned by using the final fusion results as internal feedbacks. In particular, as more misleading data are eliminated, more accurate sensor models emerge. By employing ADFS to localize a simulated mobile robot in a highly noisy environment, the results prove its superiority, especially compared to the conventional entropy based methods of localization. © 2006 IEEE.
