Worst-Case Integrity Attacks and Resilient State Estimation With Partially Secured Measurements

This paper examines the problem of optimal deception attacks against state estimation with partially secured measurements, where smart sensors transmit innovation sequences to the remote end for information fusion. Due to resource limitations or defensive countermeasures, the adversary can only modify data packets transmitted through unreliable channels. Meanwhile, the attack should be synthesized with sophistication to deceive an anomaly detector. To investigate the vulnerabilities of such estimation systems without feedback links and enhance security performance, the optimal attack policy is derived by formulating and explicitly solving a convex optimization problem, with the goal of maximizing the sum of estimation errors. Subsequently, a novel attack detection and resilient state estimation algorithm is proposed to ensure an acceptable level of estimation accuracy. The theoretical performance metrics, including false alarm rates for the proposed detector, are provided. Finally, the effectiveness of the results is confirmed through numerical examples. © 2014 IEEE.

Electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS)-based sensors are a novel class of electronic chips designed for biochemical sensing that offer a direct electronic readout, making them part of a new generation of sensing technologies. To enhance the pH sensitivity, in this research we fabricated the CeYTixOy-based EIS sensors with different Ce concentrations (1 %, 5 %, and 10%) by the solution-processing method. The crystal orientation, surface topography, and chemical composition of the sensing film were examined by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The CeYTixOy-based EIS sensor treated with an optimal 5% Ce concentration displays a Super-Nernstian pH response of 66.59 mV/pH with an excellent linearity of 0.99. In the context of reliability, the device exhibited a smaller hysteresis voltage of 7 mV and a lower drift rate of 0.75 mV/h. This result may be attributed to the optimal Ce content in the CeYTixOy leads to the formation of redox couple Ce4+/Ce3+ resulting in less than one electron transferred per proton in the redox reaction. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Hidden multi-dimensional modulation side channels in quantum protocols

Quantum protocols including quantum key distribution and blind quantum computing often require the preparation of quantum states of known dimensions. Here, we show that, rather surprisingly, hidden multi-dimensional modulation is often performed by practical devices. This violates the dimensional assumption in quantum protocols, thus creating side channels and security loopholes. Our work has important impacts on the security of quantum cryptographic protocols. © 2024, CC BY.

Quantum algorithm to simulate Lindblad master equations

We present a quantum algorithm for simulating a family of Markovian master equations that can be realized through a probabilistic application of unitary channels and state preparation. Our approach employs a second-order product formula for the Lindblad master equation, achieved by decomposing the dynamics into dissipative and Hamiltonian components and replacing the dissipative segments with randomly compiled, easily implementable elements. The sampling approach eliminates the need for ancillary qubits to simulate the dissipation process and reduces the gate complexity in terms of the number of jump operators. We provide a rigorous performance analysis of the algorithm. We also extend the algorithm to time-dependent Lindblad equations, generalize the family of Markovian master equations it can be applied to, and explore applications beyond the Markovian noise model. A new error bound, in terms of the diamond norm, for second-order product formulas for time-dependent Liouvillians is provided that might be of independent interest.

In this paper, a deep residual network based on convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is proposed, which is utilized for feature extraction of partially occluded face expression data. The proposed method overcomes the problem of localized occlusion face feature extraction by focusing on the regions and channels containing important information in the occluded face data through CBAM. Multi-task cascaded convolutional networks (MTCNN) are firstly utilized to localize the key regions of face emotion, and then deep emotion features are extracted by CBAM-ResNet network. The final emotion labels are generated. The effectiveness of this paper's method is verified on the RAF-DB dataset and the occluded CK+ dataset. The experimental accuracy in the RAF-DB dataset is 76.3%, which is 3.74% and 1.64% higher than the accuracy produced by the method of RGBT, and the WLS-RF, respectively. Application experiments are carried out in the real teaching scenario, which verifies the applicability of the algorithm in the real teaching scene. © 2023 IEEE.

Groundbreaking applications such as ChatGPT have heightened research interest in generative artificial intelligence (GAI). Essentially, GAI excels not only in content generation but also signal processing, offering support for wireless sensing. Hence, we introduce a novel GAI-assisted human flow detection system (G-HFD). Rigorously, G-HFD first uses the channel state information (CSI) to estimate the velocity and acceleration of propagation path length change of the human induced reflection (HIR). Then, given the strong inference ability of the diffusion model, we propose a unified weighted conditional diffusion model (UW-CDM) to denoise the estimation results, enabling detection of the number of targets. Next, we use the CSI obtained by a uniform linear array with wavelength spacing to estimate the HIR’s time of flight and direction of arrival (DoA). In this process, UW-CDM solves the problem of ambiguous DoA spectrum, ensuring accurate DoA estimation. Finally, through clustering, G-HFD determines the number of subflows and the number of targets in each subflow, i.e., the subflow size. The evaluation based on practical downlink communication signals shows G-HFD’s accuracy of subflow size detection can reach 91%. This validates its effectiveness and underscores the significant potential of GAI in the context of wireless sensing. © 2024, CC BY.

Physical systems with symmetry arise abundantly in applications, and are endowed with interesting mathematical structures. The present paper focusses on linear reciprocal and input-output Hamiltonian systems. Their characterization is studied from an input-output as well as from a state point of view. Geometrically, it turns out that they both define Lagrangian subspaces with corresponding generating functionals. Furthermore, the relations with time reversibility are analyzed. Finding Nash equilibria in non-cooperative games can be, in general, an exceptionally challenging task. This is owed to various factors, including but not limited to the cost functions of the game being nonconvex/nonconcave, the players of the game having limited information about one another, or even due to issues of computational complexity. The present tutorial draws motivation from this harsh reality and provides methods to approximate Nash or min-max equilibria in non-ideal settings using both optimization- and learning-based techniques. The tutorial acknowledges, however, that such techniques may not always converge, but instead lead to oscillations or even chaos. In that respect, tools from passivity and dissipativity theory are provided, which can offer explanations about these divergent behaviors. Finally, the tutorial highlights that, more frequently than often thought, the search for equilibrium policies is simply vain; instead, bounded rationality and non-equilibrium policies can be more realistic to employ owing to some players’ learning imperfectly or being relatively naive – "bounded rational." The efficacy of such plays is demonstrated in the context of autonomous driving systems, where it is explicitly shown that they can guarantee vehicle safety.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an early stage of non-age-related cognitive decline with an increased risk of progressing to dementia. Early detection of MCI is essential for implementing preventative strategies that can delay or prevent the onset of dementia, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Electroencephalograms (EEGs) and event-related potentials (ERPs) have shown significant promise in detecting MCI due to their affordability, real-time monitoring capabilities, and noninvasiveness. EEG provides continuous brain activity data, while ERPs offer insights into specific cognitive processes by analyzing brain responses to stimuli. These methods can complement each other in MCI diagnosis by providing a comprehensive view of overall brain function and detailed information on specific cognitive processes. However, EEG and ERP are susceptible to noise and interindividual variability, which can hinder their reliability. In addition, applying machine learning models on EEG or ERP for MCI detection presents challenges such as the risk of overfitting and difficulties in interpreting the underlying decision-making process. This review emphasizes recent advancements in signal processing and feature extraction methods applied to EEG and ERP data and explores the use of machine learning and deep learning techniques to enhance diagnostic accuracy and interpretative depth. By integrating these methodologies, the review highlights how EEG and ERP can contribute to a more effective understanding and monitoring of cognitive changes associated with MCI, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis for timely intervention and improved patient care. Finally, the review focuses on future research directions, including the development of advanced analytical techniques and multimodal integration approaches involving EEG and ERP to further improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical application. © 2024 IEEE.
