We provide a novel transcription of monotone operator theory to the non-Euclidean finite-dimensional spaces ℓ 1 and ℓ ∞ . We first establish properties of mappings which are monotone with respect to the non-Euclidean norms ℓ 1 or ℓ ∞ . In analogy with their Euclidean counterparts, mappings which are monotone with respect to a non-Euclidean norm are amenable to numerous algorithms for computing their zeros. We demonstrate that several classic iterative methods for computing zeros of monotone operators are directly applicable in the non-Euclidean framework. We present a case-study in the equilibrium computation of recurrent neural networks and demonstrate that casting the computation as a suitable operator splitting problem improves convergence rates.

An overview of the ancillary services in the Nigerian power sector is provided in this work. These services are essential in the power system because they are additional services required by the grid during critical times to enable the power grid to operate in a stable, safe, and reliable manner. The ancillary services provided as stipulated in the Grid Code are black start, frequency control, operating reserves, and voltage control. The System Operator procures the relevant ancillary service depending on the requirement of the grid at a particular time. The paper further presents some ways of improving the viability of ancillary services for the energy grid of Nigeria. These include making incentives more attractive for suppliers of ancillary services, utilizing more hydroelectric power plants for generation and load balancing, integrating distributed generation to provide support to the reactive power, and making necessary investments in the grid. © 2023 IEEE.

Biological foam has seriously troubled the wastewater treatment process and brings major challenges to effluent quality, process efficiency, and operation safety. This study systematically analyzed bio-foam characteristics from three piggery wastewater treatment stations to reveal potential foaming mechanisms. The low surface tension for piggery wastewater led to strong foaming capacity, and high viscosity and Zeta potential contributed to foam stability. The long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) in wastewater were proved to be the key components responsible for foaming: the decrease of surface tension caused by LCFAs directly induced strong foaming ability (physicochemical path);moreover, LCFAs favored the enrichment of non-filamentous foam-related microbes like Hydrogenophaga and Pseudomonas to secrete extracellular polymeric substances, increasing the viscosity and Zeta potential to maintain foam stability (biological paths). Based on the revealed foaming mechanism dominated by LCFAS, this study provided novel insight and valuable guidance for the efficient and safe treatment of piggery wastewater. © 2023, The Authors. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has received increasing attention due to its capability of extending cell coverage by reflecting signals toward receivers. This paper considers a RIS-assisted high-speed train (HST) communication system to improve coverage probability. We derive the closed-form expression of coverage probability. Moreover, we analyze impacts of some key system parameters, including transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, and horizontal distance between base station and RIS. Simulation results verify the efficiency of RIS-assisted HST communications in terms of coverage probability.

Modern district heating technologies have a great potential to make the energy sector more flexible and sustainable due to their capabilities to use energy sources of varied nature and to efficiently store energy for subsequent use. Central control tasks within these systems for the efficient and safe distribution of heat refer to the stabilization of overall system temperatures and the regulation of storage units state of charge. These are challenging goals when the networked and nonlinear nature of district heating system models is taken into consideration. In this letter, for district heating systems with multiple, distributed heat producers, we propose a decentralized control scheme to provably meet said tasks stably. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. To facilitate responsive and cost-effective computing resource scheduling and service delivery over edge-assisted mobile networks, this paper investigates a novel two-stage double auction methodology via utilizing an interesting idea of resource overbooking to overcome dynamic and uncertain nature from edge servers (sellers) and demand from mobile devices (as buyers). The proposed auction integrates multiple essential factors such as social welfare maximization and decision-making latency (e.g., the time for determining winning seller-buyer pairs) reduction, by introducing a stagewise strategy: an overbooking-driven pre-double auction (OPDAuction) for determining long-term cooperations between sellers and buyers before practical resource transactions as Stage I, and a real-time backup double auction (RBDAuction) for handling residual resource demands during actual transactions. In particular, by applying a proper overbooking rate, OPDAuction helps with facilitating trading contracts between appropriate sellers and buyers as guidance for future transactions, by allowing the booked resources to exceed supply. Then, since pre-auctions may cause risks, our RBDAuction adjusts to real-time market changes, further enhancing the overall social welfare. More importantly, we offer an interesting view to show that our proposed two-stage auction can support significant design properties such as truthfulness, individual rationality, and budget balance. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate good performance in social welfare, time efficiency, and computational scalability, outstripping conventional methods in dynamic edge computing settings. Creation and control of topological complex excitations play crucial roles in both fundamental physics and modern information science. Torons are a sophisticated class of 3D chiral polar topological structures with both skyrmionic quasiparticle textures and monopole point defects, so far only observed in liquid crystal nonpolar models. Here, we experimentally construct torons with the photonic spin of vector structured light and demonstrate the topological phase transitions among diverse topological states: torons, hopfions, skyrmioniums and monopole pairs. We can also continually tune the toron’s chirality and the helical spin textures of emerging monopole pairs. The birth of photonic torons and tunable monopoles opens a flexible platform for studying nontrivial light-matter interaction and topological informatics. © 2024, CC0.

Dense map that contains the surrounding geometry and vision information of a robot is widely used for path planning, navigation, obstacle avoidance and other applications. Considering the performance of the processing unit mounted on the robot is limited, mapping algorithm has to make compromise by sacrificing speed and precision. It will be more challenging when the dense mapping scene is very large because the memory consumption will be greatly increased and the map is difficult to be extended if beyonding the initial map. To suppress the negative impact from the increased map scale, we proposed a novel block mapping approach to generate the dense map in large scale of scene. In this work, the elevation map is selected as the base dense map. The entire elevation map is segmented into numerous block maps of which size is much smaller than that of the entire map. The present moment of lidar and vision measurements are used to generate the local elevation map. The local elevation map is used to update block maps which are adaptively generated along the motion trajectory. A memory-disk interaction mechanism, which the block maps will be loaded to memory or saved to local disk when needed, is introduced. Our block mapping approach is tested on the KITTI datasets, and the results demonstrate that the mapping approach can stably operate in a large scale of scene with a much smaller consumption of memory.

We propose a quantum annealing protocol that effectively probes the dynamics of a single qubit on D-Wave’s quantum annealing hardware. This protocol uses D-Wave’s h-gain schedule functionality, which allows the rapid suppression of the longitudinal magnetic field at arbitrary points during the anneal. This feature enables us to distinguish between open and closed-system dynamics as well as the presence and absence of longitudinal magnetic field noise. We show that thermal fluctuations alone are not sufficient to explain the system’s dynamics and that a prominent role is played by magnetic field fluctuations, which need to be included in an open quantum system description. Moreover, our protocol only requires single-qubit measurements, which makes it suitable as an exploration and calibration tool for large-scale quantum annealing hardware.

In this paper, we study output consensus of coupled linear port-Hamiltonian systems on graphs in the presence of constant disturbances, where couplings are allowed to be both static and dynamic. Utilizing port-Hamiltonian structures, we present dynamic controllers achieving output consensus where the consensus values are determined by the disturbances. Finally, the utility of the proposed controller is illustrated by applying it to current sharing of DC microgrids.
