—In this paper, we study how to alleviate highway traffic congestion by encouraging plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles to stop at a charging station around peak congestion times. Specifically, we design a pricing policy to make the charging price dynamic and dependent on the traffic congestion, predicted via the cell transmission model, and the availability of charging spots. Furthermore, we develop a novel framework to model how this policy affects the drivers’ decisions by formulating a mixed-integer potential game. Technically, we introduce the concept of "road-to-station" (r2s) and "station-to-road" (s2r) flows, and show that the selfish actions of the drivers converge to charging schedules that are individually optimal in the sense of Nash. In the second part of this work, submitted as a separate paper (Part II: Case Study), we validate the proposed strategy on a simulated highway stretch between The Hague and Rotterdam, in The Netherlands. In this paper, we study how to alleviate highway traffic congestions by encouraging plug-in electric and hybrid vehicles to stop at charging stations around peak congestion times. Specifically, we focus on a case study and simulate the adoption of a dynamic charging price depending on the traffic congestion. We use real traffic data of the A13 highway stretch between The Hague and Rotterdam, in The Netherlands, to identify the Cell Transmission Model. Then, we apply the algorithm proposed in [1](Part I: Theory) to different scenarios, validating the theoretical results and showing the benefits of our strategy in terms of traffic congestion alleviation. Finally, we carry out a sensitivity analysis of the proposed algorithm and discuss how to optimize its performance. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper considers distributed online nonconvex optimization with time-varying inequality constraints over a network of agents. For a time-varying graph, we propose a distributed online primal–dual algorithm with compressed communication to efficiently utilize communication resources. We show that the proposed algorithm establishes an O(T max{1−θ1,θ1}) network regret bound and an O(T 1−θ1/2) network cumulative constraint violation bound, where T is the number of iterations and θ1 ∈ (0, 1) is a user-defined trade-off parameter. When Slater’s condition holds (i.e, there is a point that strictly satisfies the inequality constraints at all iterations), the network cumulative constraint violation bound is reduced to O(T 1−θ1). These bounds are comparable to the state-of-the-art results established by existing distributed online algorithms with perfect communication for distributed online convex optimization with (time-varying) inequality constraints. The maximum surveillance of a target which is holding course is considered, wherein an observer vehicle aims to maximize the time that a faster target remains within a fixed-range of the observer. This entails two coupled phases: an approach phase and observation phase. In the approach phase, the observer strives to make contact with the faster target, such that in the observation phase, the observer is able to maximize the time where the target remains within range. Using Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle, the optimal control laws for the observer are found in closed-form. Example scenarios highlight various aspects of the engagement. © 2022, CC0.

We study the tractability of classically simulating critical phenomena in the quench dynamics of one-dimensional transverse field Ising models (TFIMs) using highly truncated matrix product states (MPS). We focus on two paradigmatic examples: a dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) that occurs in nonintegrable long-range TFIMs, and the infinite-time correlation length of the integrable nearest-neighbor TFIM when quenched to the critical point, where the quantities of interest involve equal time one- and two- point correlation functions, which we associate with macroproperties. For the DQPT, we show that the order parameters can be efficiently simulated with heavy truncation of the MPS bond dimension. This can be used to reliably extract critical properties of the phase transition, including critical exponents, even when the full many-body state is not simulated with high fidelity. The long-time correlation length near the critical point is more sensitive to the full many-body state fidelity, and generally requires a large bond dimension MPS. Nonetheless, this can still be efficiently simulated with strongly truncated MPS because it can be extracted from the short-time behavior of the dynamics where entanglement is low. Our results provide illustrations of scenarios where accurate calculation of the full many-body state (microstate) is intractable due to the volume-law growth of entanglement, yet a precise specification of an exact microstate may not be required when simulating macroproperties that play a role in phases of matter of many-body systems. We also study the tractability of simulation using truncated MPS based on quantum chaos and equilibration in the models. We find a counterintuitive inverse relationship, whereby local expectation values are most easily approximated for chaotic systems whose exact many-body state is most intractable. Ant colony optimization (ACO) has been found to be useful on several vehicle routing problem variations. In this work, ACO is applied to the electric vehicle routing problem with time windows (E-VRPTW). The E-VRPTW has a hierarchical multiple objective function, which is to minimize the number of electric vehicles and the total distance traveled. A multiple ACO is applied to E-VRPTW in which two colonies cooperate to minimize the objectives in parallel. A local search is embedded in ACO to improve the quality of the output. The experimental results on a set of benchmark instances show that the multiple ACO is competitive with existing methods.

This work concerns the investigation of time-optimal control problem for a simplified mobile robot model subject to state constraints. In this type of problems, which involve the so-called unicycle dynamics, the well-established regularity conditions with respect to the state constraints are not fulfilled. This fact greatly complicates the analysis of the control problem bearing in mind the use of the maximum principle. Moreover, the difficulty is also due to the presence of a singular control mode with respect to the angular velocity. Herein, a regularization approach is proposed in order to overcome these obstacles. A certain tool for the numerical implementation is developed. The numerical analysis is provided for a sample problem.

The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans. © 2022 IEEE.

Maintaining energy balance and economical operation is significant for multi-energy systems such as the energy hub (EH). However, it is usually challenged by the frequently changing and unpredictable uncertain parameters at different timescales. Under this scope, this paper investigates the coordinated energy management problem for day-ahead and intra-day conditions considering uncertainties of source-load and market prices concurrently. Note that the precise knowledge of distributions about uncertainties may be unaccessible before the decision-making in day-ahead phase. A two-stage chance-constrained model based on distributionally robust approach with ambiguous moment information is proposed to immunize scheduling strategies against the worst-case probability distributions. The first stage is dedicated to obtaining more energy arbitrage and operation flexibility by optimizing bidding strategies in day-ahead power, natural gas and carbon trading markets. The second stage focuses on the optimization of the worst-case expected operation cost. It provides a robust energy equipment and load scheduling strategy for the reference of subsequent intra-day arrangements. With respect to different variations of electrical and thermal components, an intra-day two-timescale coordination is implemented step by step. The energy scheduling is re-dispatched circularly to minimize the operation and penalty costs. The possible energy imbalance is also compensated by this way. As the energy management program is nonlinear, chance-constrained and multi-stage, some linearization and dual transformation techniques are designed to enhance tractability of the program. Experimental results show that the developed multi-level framework results in a carbon emission decrease of 37%, and reduces energy cost averagely 3% compared with corresponding contrasting cases.
