In computer vision, when labeled images of the target domain are highly insufficient, it is challenging to build an accurate classifier. Domain adaptation stands for an effective solution to address it by utilizing available and related source domain which has sufficient labeled images, even when there is a substantial difference in properties and distributions of these two domains. Yet, most prior approaches merely reduce subspace conditional or marginal distribution differences between domains but entirely ignoring label dependence (LD) information of source data in subspace. This article proposes a novel approach of domain adaptation, called enhanced subspace distribution matching (ESDM), which makes good use of label information to enhance the distribution matching between the source and target domains in a shared subspace. It reduces both conditional and marginal distributions in a shared subspace during a procedure of kernel principal dimensionality reduction and also preserves source data LD information to the maximum extent, thereby significantly improving cross domain subspace distribution matching. We also provide a learning algorithm with highly affordable computation, which solves the ESDM optimization problem without using time-consuming iterations. Results confirm that it can well outperform several recent domain adaptation methods on image classification tasks in terms of classification accuracy and running time. The results can be used in social cognition, person reidentification, and human-machine interactions. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper deals with the development of an adaptive robust controller for an Unmanned Aircraft System with variable mass. The goal is to improve trajectory tracking and energy performance while the aircraft mass is gradually reducing due to payload release. To improve the trajectory tracking performance, we propose an algorithm that merges the concepts of least squares method and sliding mode observer for the estimation of the vehicle mass. The nonlinear observer estimates the linear velocities and accelerations, which are further used to obtain the vehicle mass. A robust adaptive pole placement controller based on the Attractive Ellipsoid Method uses this estimation to update the controllers gains due to the mass variation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for performing aerial transportation and deployment of payloads, we present a numerical example comparing the performance of the proposed method with respect to using Proportional Derivative controllers as well as Robust controllers. © 2021 Chinese Automatic control Society and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has received increasing attention due to its capability of extending cell coverage by reflecting signals toward receivers. This paper considers a RIS-assisted high-speed train (HST) communication system to improve the coverage probability. We derive the closed-form expression of coverage probability. Moreover, we analyze impacts of some key system parameters, including transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, and horizontal distance between base station and RIS. Simulation results verify the efficiency of RIS-assisted HST communications in terms of coverage probability. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We present a randomized dynamical decoupling (DD) protocol that can substantially improve the performance of any given deterministic DD, by using no more than two additional pulses. Our construction is implemented by probabilistically applying sequences of pulses, which, when combined, effectively eliminate the error terms that scale linearly with the system-environment coupling strength. As a result, we show that a randomized protocol using a few pulses can outperform deterministic DD protocols that require considerably more pulses. Furthermore, we prove that the randomized protocol provides an improvement compared to deterministic DD sequences that aim to reduce the error in the system’s Hilbert space, such as Uhrig DD, which had been previously regarded to be optimal. To rigorously evaluate the performance, we introduce new analytical methods suitable for analyzing higher-order DD protocols that might be of independent interest. We also present numerical simulations confirming the significant advantage of using randomized protocols compared to widely used deterministic protocols. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Purpose: We aimed to build a machine learning-based model to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy in patients who had treated head and neck cancers with radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: To measure radiation-induced optic neuropathy, the visual evoked potential values were obtained in both case and control groups and compared. The radiomics features were extracted from the area segmented by Swin UNETR version 2, which included the right and left optic nerves and chiasm. We ranked 5 supervised ML models Bernoulli Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, Gradient Boosting Decision Trees, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest on 4 input datasets to predict radiation-induced visual complications classifiers by implementing 5-fold cross-validation. The F1 score, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve were compared to access prediction capability. Results: radiation-induced optic neuropathy affected 31% of the patients. 856 radiomic characteristics were extracted and selected from each segmented area. Decision Tree and Random Forest with the highest AUC (97% and 95% respectively) among the five classifiers were the most powerful algorithms to predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy. Chiasm with higher sensitivity and precision can predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy better than right or left optic nerve or combination of all radiomic features. Conclusion: We found that combination of radiomic, dosimetric, and clinical factors can predict radiation-induced optic neuropathy after radiation treatment with high accuracy. To acquire more reliable results, it is recommended to conduct visual evoked potential tests before and after radiation therapy, with multiple follow-up courses and more patients. © 2024, The Authors. The Behavioral Intervention with Technology for E-Weight Loss Study (BITES): Incorporating Energy Balance Models and the Bite Counter into an Online Behavioral Weight Loss Program

This study evaluated feasibility and acceptability of adding energy balance modeling displayed on weight graphs combined with a wrist-worn bite counting sensor against a traditional online behavioral weight loss program. Adults with a BMI of 27–45 kg/m² (83.3% women) were randomized to receive a 12-week online behavioral weight loss program with 12 weeks of continued contact (n = 9;base program), the base program plus a graph of their actual and predicted weight change based on individualized physiological parameters (n = 7), or the base program, graph, and a Bite Counter device for monitoring and limiting eating (n = 8). Participants attended weekly clinic weigh-ins plus baseline, midway (12 weeks), and study culmination (24 weeks) assessments of feasibility, acceptability, weight, and behavioral outcomes. In terms of feasibility, participants completed online lessons (M = 7.04 of 12 possible lessons, SD = 4.02) and attended weigh-ins (M = 16.81 visits, SD = 7.24). Six-month retention appears highest among nomogram participants, and weigh-in attendance and lesson completion appear highest in Bite Counter participants. Acceptability was sufficient across groups. Bite Counter use (days with ≥ 2 eating episodes) was moderate (47.8%) and comparable to other studies. Participants lost 4.6% ± 4.5 of their initial body weight at 12 weeks and 4.5% ± 5.8 at 24 weeks. All conditions increased their total physical activity minutes and use of weight control strategies (behavioral outcomes). Although all groups lost weight and the study procedures were feasible, acceptability can be improved with advances in the technology. Participants were satisfied with the online program and nomograms, and future research on engagement, adherence, and integration with other owned devices is needed. *** Identifier: NCT02857595. © 2020, The Author(s).

The history of the use of mines dates back almost two centuries. The geography of their use and the associated social harm have made them, without exaggeration, a global problem. At the same time, searches were underway for safe methods of their neutralization using various technical means. In so doing, until now, none of the existing methods provides a 100% guarantee of cleaning the territory, which determines the purpose of finding innovative methods and the possibility of combining them with existing ones. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming a real modern breakthrough in the field of intellectual achievements. Obtaining optimal results when solving a wide range of different problems, together with the development of composite materials, software, and the latest navigation equipment, make the tasks assigned to them and the expected results more and more difficult. UAVs allow people not to be in life-threatening conditions, to conduct activities beyond their physiological and psychophysiological abilities. The combination of the ability to collect spatial data during flight in various ranges of remote sensing with the possibility of carrying variants of useful equipment opens up prospects for their use in the field of demining territories. Supplementing UAV technologies with modern information systems for processing and analysis of information (expert systems, machine learning, computational intelligence, distributed artificial intelligence, neural networks, etc.), including spatial (GIS), opens up great prospects in the field of humanitarian demining of territories. © 2024, The Authors. Target Defense against Sequentially Arriving Intruders

We consider a variant of the target defense problem where a single defender is tasked to capture a sequence of incoming intruders. The intruders’ objective is to breach the target boundary without being captured by the defender. As soon as the current intruder breaches the target or gets captured by the defender, the next intruder appears at a random location on a fixed circle surrounding the target. Therefore, the defender’s final location at the end of the current game becomes its initial location for the next game. Thus, the players pick strategies that are advantageous for the current as well as for the future games. Depending on the information available to the players, each game is divided into two phases: partial information and full information phase. Under some assumptions on the sensing and speed capabilities, we analyze the agents’ strategies in both phases. We derive equilibrium strategies for both the players to optimize the capture percentage using the notions of engagement surface and capture circle. This paper addresses the problem of input-to-state stability of two interconnected impulsive systems with linear interconnection gains. Under dwell time or reverse dwell time constraint, sufficient conditions are provided which ensure input-to-state stability of the overall system. Compared to available results, the newly developed conditions do not rely on systems augmentation and hence avoids expanding the overall system dimensions. Some numerical examples are given to verify the theoretical outcomes.
