Auto-stereoscopic displays using slanted optical plates have inherent subpixel rasterization compared to the normal 2D displays, and mappings between subpixel positions and multi-view indices even vary according to the number of views and angles of slanted optical plates. In this paper, we derive a simple but generalized formula for subpixel mappings from a naïve ray-tracing technique on RGB stripe type panels. To verify the proposed algorithm, our proto-type auto-stereoscopic display using parallax barriers with a slanted angle was used and examined in the experiment. The proposed algorithm is expected to leverage converting multi-view 3D inputs to various types of auto-stereoscopic contents in real time. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper proposes a method to determine best options for transmission system expansion for UHVAC systems, considering a) voltage security regarding lighting overvoltage, b) operational flexibility using contingency analysis, and c) economics efficiency using machine learning. Inspired by standard contingency analysis, the method provides an integrated ranking approach to synthetize optimal solutions for expansion. The method is integrated using commercial power system software, and it is demonstrated on China's 1000kV UHVAC Power Grid. The validity of the method is verified by the actual decisions included in China's 1000kV UHVAC power grid expansion plan.

Structural systems theory: An overview of the last 15 years

In this paper, we provide an overview of the research conducted in the context of structural systems since the latest survey by Dion et al. in 2003. We systematically consider all the papers that cite this survey as well as the seminal work in this field that took place on and after the publication of the later survey, are published in peer-reviewed venues and in English. Structural systems theory deals with parametric systems where parameters might be unknown and, therefore, addresses the study of systems properties that depend only on the systems structure (or topology) described by the inter-dependencies between state variables. Remarkably, structural systems properties hold generically (i.e., almost always) under the assumption that parameters are independent. Therefore, it constitutes an approach to assess necessary conditions that systems should satisfy. In recent years, structural systems theory was applied to design systems that attain such properties, as well as to endure resilient/security and privacy properties. Furthermore, structural systems theory enables the formulation of such topics as combinatorial optimization problems, which allow us to understand their computational complexity and find algorithms that are efficiently deployed in the context of large-scale systems. In particular, we present an overview of how structural systems theory has been used in the context of linear time-invariant systems, as well as other dynamical models, for which a brief description of the different problem statements and solutions approaches are presented. Next, we describe recent variants of structural systems theory, as well as different applications of the classical and new approaches. Background: To enhance postoperative patient survival, particularly in older adults, understanding the predictors of mortality following hip fracture becomes paramount. Air pollution, a prominent global environmental issue, has been linked to heightened morbidity and mortality across a spectrum of diseases. Nevertheless, the precise impact of air pollution on hip fracture outcomes remains elusive. Objective: This retrospective study aims to comprehensively investigate the profound influence of a decade-long exposure to 12 diverse air pollutants on the risk of post–hip fracture mortality among older Taiwanese patients (older than 60 years). We hypothesized that enduring long-term exposure to air pollution would significantly elevate the 1-year mortality rate following hip fracture surgery. Methods: From Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, we obtained the data of patients who underwent hip fracture surgery between July 1, 2003, and December 31, 2013. Using patients’ insurance registration data, we estimated their cumulative exposure levels to sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), particulate matter having a size of <10 μm (PM10), particulate matter having a size of <2.5 μm (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides (NOX), nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), total hydrocarbons (THC), nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC), and methane (CH4). We quantified the dose-response relationship between these air pollutants and the risk of mortality by calculating hazard ratios associated with a 1 SD increase in exposure levels over a decade. Results: Long-term exposure to SO2, CO, PM10, PM2.5, NOX, NO, NO2, THC, NMHC, and CH4 demonstrated significant associations with heightened all-cause mortality risk within 1 year post hip fracture surgery among older adults. electrical submersible pump (ESP) systems in the oil field have unique features due to the long cabling effect. The electrical system for a typical ESP installation consists of a variable frequency drive (VFD), a multi-tap step-up transformer, a surface cable, a downhole main cable, a motor lead extension (MLE) cable, and an electrical submersible motor. A load filter is usually required in a VFD-ESP system. In this paper, several operational parameters that can significantly affect operating conditions of an ESP system are demonstrated through field measurements and simulation of a practical ESP system currently in operation in Alberta, Canada. The simulation model is also validated by comparing with field measurement data. This analysis is beneficial to field engineers and ESP system operators to understand better the impacts of equipment parameter settings. © 2003-2010 IEEE Canada.

Measurement device-independent quantum key distribution with passive, time-dependent source side-channels

While measurement-device-independent (MDI) quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two trusted parties to establish a shared secret key from a distance without needing to trust a central detection node, their quantum sources must be well-characterized, with side-channels at the source posing the greatest loophole to the protocol's security. In this paper, we identify a time-dependent side-channel in a common polarization-based QKD source that employs a Faraday mirror for phase stabilization. We apply the recently developed numerical proof technique from [Phys. Rev. A 99, 062332 (2019)] to quantify the sensitivity of the secret key rate to the quantum optical model for the side-channel, and to develop strategies to mitigate the information leakage. In particular, we find that the MDI three-state and BB84 protocols, while yielding the same key rate under ideal conditions, have diverging results in the presence of a side-channel, with BB84 proving more advantageous. While we consider only a representative case example, we expect the strategies developed and key rate analysis method to be broadly applicable to other leaky sources. © 2021, CC BY.

We propose and analyze a protocol for stabilizing a maximally entangled state of two noninteracting qubits using active state-dependent feedback from a continuous two-qubit half-parity measurement in coordination with a concurrent, noncommuting dynamical decoupling drive. We demonstrate that such a drive can be simultaneous with the measurement and feedback, while also playing a key part in the feedback protocol itself. We show that robust stabilization with near-unit fidelity can be achieved even in the presence of realistic nonidealities, such as time delay in the feedback loop, imperfect state-tracking, inefficient measurements, dephasing from 1/f-distributed qubit-frequency noise, and relaxation. We mitigate feedback-delay error by introducing a forward-state-estimation strategy in the feedback controller that tracks the effects of control signals already in transit. More generally, the steady state is globally attractive without the need for ancillas, regardless of the error state, in contrast to most known feedback and error-correction schemes.

This article proposes a fixed-time adaptive fault-tolerant control methodology for a larger class of high-order nonlinear systems subject to full-state constraints and actuator faults. In contrast with the state-of-the-art results, the distinguishing feature of our control design consists in proposing a novel high-order tan-type barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) which ensures state variables to be some asymmetric time-varying compact sets under tan-type constraints and expands the application range of tan-type BLF (i.e., from low-order to high-order, from symmetric time-invariant to asymmetric time-varying). Apart from this, the proposed control design ensures the tracking errors converge to specified residual sets within fixed-time and makes the size of the convergence regions of tracking errors adjustable a priori by means of a new BLF-based tuning function and a projection operator. A variable-separable lemma is delicately embedded into the control design to extract the control terms in a linear-like fashion which not only overcomes the difficulty that virtual control signals appear in a non-affine manner, but also solves the problem of actuator faults. The design of an RTOS (real-time operation system) kernel is mostly based on a preemptive scheduler that responds to events and interrupts according to the priorities. The hardware RTOS (HW-RTOS) concept includes a real-time scheduler which ensures a deterministic execution of a set of tasks by implementing in hardware the appropriate scheduling algorithms, similar to those of the RTOS. The contributions of this paper consist in presenting original methods that contribute to increasing the performance of the RTOS, to reduce the jitter effect by implementing a unified space of task and event priorities, to increase the execution factor and controlling the RTS (real-time system) scheduling limit, by implementing the real-time event handling unit. © 2020 IEEE.

With the explosive growth of vehicle applications, vehicular networks based on millimeter wave (mmWave) bands have attracted interests from both academia and industry. mmWave communications are able to utilize the huge available bandwidth to provide multiple Gbps transmission rates among vehicles. In this paper, we address the content distribution scheduling problem in mmWave vehicular networks. It has been challenging for all vehicles in the same network to complete content downloading due to the limited communication resources of roadside units (RSUs) and the high mobility of vehicles. We propose a joint vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) scheduling scheme to minimize the total number of content distribution time slots from a global optimization perspective. In the V2I phase, the RSU serially transmits integrity content to vehicles, which are selected according to the vehicular network topology and transmission scheduling scheme. In the V2V phase, full-duplex communications and concurrent transmissions are exploited to achieve content sharing between vehicles and improve transmission efficiency. Performance evaluations demonstrate that our proposed scheme reduces the number of time slots and significantly improves system throughput when compared with other schemes, especially under large-size file transfers and a large number of vehicles.
